Spacious one-bedroom Cottage on two acre property

Lonely Planet 'Discover Maui', Top Choice in Haiku, described as 'Pilialoha blends countryside charm with all the comforts of a home away from home. The sunny split-level cottage has one pretty setting, nestled in a eucalyptus grove. Everything inside is pretty, too. But it is the warm hospitality and attention to detail that shine brightest.'

Romantic free-standing spacious one-bedroom cottage, perfect for two people. Living/Dining room with a fully equipped kitchen, with complimentary coffees & teas.

The bedroom is split-level, with the upper level containing a dressing area leading to the bathroom with a shower/tub combination. The step-down bedroom has a queen size bed and a private lanai. There is also an indoor laundry facility (detergent provided). On your arrival day, fruits, juice, milk, bread & cereal will be placed in the kitchen.

The location is very convenient to explore all parts of Maui from here. Many of our guests have expressed how they look forward to coming back to the cottage to relax each evening after their daily activities.

About Machiko Heyde

Thirty years ago, Bill was transferred to Maui by a major computer company and he is recently retired. Machiko is an artist and avid gardener.

Machiko Heyde purchased this cottage in 1988

Why Machiko Heyde chose Haiku-Pauwela

When we moved to Maui over 30 years ago, we immediately fell in love with the Upcountry area more than any other parts of Maui. We purchased this property because of the desirable location and setting. The main house and the guest cottage are perfectly separated from each other, so our guests have their own privacy. We fully renovated and furnished the cottage for our guests travelers. Thanks to our many returning guests, we have been comfortably busy over the past 20 years.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a perfect location to explore the entire island of Maui. Having its own private driveway, hidden from the public road and the forest on one side of the property creates a unique, hidden hideaway to relax. Quiet, yet very convenient to stores & restaurants. But when you just want to let go of Maui's splendor and relax for the day, this cottage on this property is ideal. A collection of books, DVDs & CDs are also provided to keep you company.

A piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Philialoha cottage was as fantastic as all the prior reviews suggested it would be. Unlike a stay in a condo or a hotel, there were no other fellow guests getting up early or coming in late. The cottage was pure peace and quiet, aside from the chirping of the birds. Everything we wanted to see was a relatively short drive away and in our 13 nights we saw lots of Maui.

We particularly liked the fact that Bill and Machiko lived next door so they were there to offer advice as needed, and address any issues that emerged. The cottage is clean, well furnished, and is very well supplied with kitchen hardware. The fresh farm eggs were delicious as were the fresh muffins and scones that awaited us upon our arrival to the cottage. We especially liked having everything needed for a trip to the beach - chairs, coolers, umbrella, sun tan lotion. Also having the washer and dryer was a big bonus as it made for lighter packing.

We were very happy to have found this cottage and have no hesitation to recommend it to family and friends.

Relaxing and Quiet, Immaculate!, Close to Everything

  • 5 of 5

This private, self-contained cottage is perfect for your Maui vacation. Situated off the main road, down a quiet lane we felt secluded, yet close to charming beach towns like Makawao and Haiku. Beaches were a short scenic drive away. Throughout our week at Pilialoha we were continually impressed with the forethought put into the design of the cottage. Large windows looked out onto eucalyptus trees and rolling hills, with chickens and sheep on adjacent properties. The lanai was a relaxing spot to watch the incredible night skies. The home was comfortabley stocked with all the beach and snorkeling, picnic, and outdoor gear we needed and was immaculately maintained. No mold, no bugs, no peeling paint or worn furnishings. The owners were incredibly helpful and friendly whenever we needed tips on local sites and take pride in their lovely cottage. Our flight was delayed and when we drove in after midnight, the owners had fresh fruit, juices, and pastries waiting for our breakfast. We are telling everyone we know to stay here. The Maui 'up-country' is definitely the place to be! We cannot wait to return!

Quiet. Restful. Hospitable.

  • 5 of 5

The Pilialoha Cottage is clean and orderly—but generous. The hosts are hospitable, but not at all in your face. The cottage us private but spacious and the hosts provide many basics and grace notes that other (far more expensive) condos omit.

Makawao and the interesting ocean beaches and Haleakala are easy to access from this location.

We are glad we stayed here.

Beautiful, quaint, peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I chose to stay here on a quick trip to Maui without the kids. We had a wonderful peaceful time. The location is great, easy driving to many of the Maui attractions. Only one hour up to Haleakala for sunrise! Cottage was pristine. Highly recommend!

The perfect anniversary getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had settled on Maui as the place to go for our 44th anniversary, and we were looking for something more intimate and charming than the standard beach condo. Paging through the reviews for Maui cottages on VRBO we marked Pilialoha Cottage as a "finalist" for our choice of a place to stay. After narrowing the search, we settled on Pilialoha Cottage for 10 days in October, 2017. Upon our arrival, Bill and Machiko introduced themselves, helped us unload our rental car, and gave us a tour of the cottage. The first impression is what it feels like to drop in on old friends for a visit. The cottage is all that is advertised in the reviews; neat as a pin, comfortable in a gorgeous setting, and well appointed with absolutely everything we could possibly need, but it is Bill and Machiko Heyde that move this cottage from five stars to something very special. They live in the "big house" next door, and will provide anything that you might need for your stay. Having said that, it is hard to think for anything that is not already provided, from fresh fruit and eggs, to home-baked muffins (Machiko just e-mailed us the recipe), milk and cereal, to every conceivable convenience one might need, even outdoor slippers Advice to travelers: only pack clothes, a camera and a toothbrush and you will be fine. The location in upcountry Maui is rural and bucolic, but close enough to restaurants and shopping. As for restaurants, we found Colleen's in the Cannery in Haiku Town, about 10 minutes down the hill, to be a great place for breakfast or lunch, and of course there is Mama's Fish House in Paia for the celebratory dinner. We did most of our own cooking, and the kitchen is very well equipped for all manner of meal preparation. They even provided us with a small table top propane grill for barbecuing on the back porch. Taken all together, this is a special place with a charm that is not often found when traveling.
