Kulike is a unique vacation property in a very tranquil, rural setting. The unique style, and freshness of the home complements the 'off the beaten path' location. It is the perfect location to return to after a day of exploring the island.
Kulike has been used in Pottery Barn photo shoots, and was featured in the February 2012 issue of Coastal Living Magazine. Coastal Living is quoted as saying 'Coming here is about being outside, enjoying the views and spending time with each other'.
Kulike is a classic Hawaiian design with modern amenities. It offers a very quiet country setting, with several acres of property, lovely ocean views, hundreds of tropical plants and trees, AND a 40ft swimming pool (with electric cover). Enjoy our little nature walk showcasing rare palms and plants. Many are labeled for your reference.
Our home was completed in 2005 and building materials were chosen to blend with the coastal elements - Douglas fir walls, hickory pecan floors, and mahogany window frames. We also wanted to be sustainable, and have catchment water, solar hot water, photovoltaic system for the pool pump, and of course our fresh air 'solar' clothes line (of course we also have a clothes dryer in the house).
The interior was designed in the style of a Kama`aina plantation house for a casual easy-going lifestyle. It has wide covered decks, full kitchen (including a commercial style range), two bedrooms with queen beds, one children's room with 2 single beds, laundry, TV/DVD, high speed wireless internet access. Many of the furnishings are antiques.
This is a very special environment for the guest that truly wants to feel as though they have escaped!

This property has a vacation rental permit issued by the County of Maui, and is subject to the rules and restrictions imposed by the County for all short term rental homes. Please understand that we would be unable to accept a rental that does not agree to abide by these rules. Note: properties without a short term rental permit are subject to closure by the County.
1. Neighbors - Please be considerate of our neighbors. Noise carries easily to their homes, particularly in the evening. NO loud music, NO parties, NO amplified sound of any nature at any time. Many neighbors must be up early in the morning to go to work, and it's important that your use of this property does not impact them in any way.
2. Quiet Hours - Quiet time is from 9pm to 8am.
3. Use of the Property - Additional friends/family CANNOT be invited to the property and it cannot be used as a “meeting place”. The property can be used ONLY by the guests listed on the rental agreement. The County law allows us to accommodate a maximum of two guests x the number of bedrooms.
4. Parking - There is plenty of parking on the property. Vehicles CANNOT be parked on the street at any time. When vehicles are on the street, there is insufficient space for emergency vehicles, fire trucks, the trash truck or neighbors to get down the road.
Additional information with respect to care and maintenance of the house will be included in the rental agreement.

Why Cathy or Melody chose Haiku-Pauwela
We visited Maui for years before deciding that we wanted to have our own property. We wanted it to be lush and tranquil. This location was perfect. We secured the land, and then started to design the house. We wanted something very different from our mainland home so that we'd come to Hawaii and feel that we'd escaped the hustle/bustle. The style resembles on old plantation home, but has top quality finish features. We love our home, and hope that you will too.

We rented this house seeking peace and tranquility and it could not have been more perfect. Everything from the beautiful grounds to the spotless charming and tasteful interior was amazing. The location was great for exploring everything the north shore has to offer. The towns are charming with great shops and restaurants. Be sure to go to the farmers market in Kula. Really good fish and produce. We look forward to returning soon!!
We came to Maui for a family vacation. We had 4 adults and two small children with us. I travel extensively for business so I've become a bit of a critic of lodging places. So I have to say that this house was one of the most peaceful, well designed and charming places I have ever stayed at. I was so impressed with just the craftsmanship put into this home, it was beautiful. The kids absolutely loved their bunk beds and the little hiding spot up top. The grown ups loved the peace of the location, the views, THE OVEN and just the overall feel of the place. The location is fairly close to Lower Paia (Flatbread was great), Haiku (Colleen's was amazing brunch) and Makawao (the cutest little Main St with great shops). The area is more of a quite, peaceful place - which is exactly what I needed. Would recommend this place to anyone needing a truly relaxing place to stay for a few days where you can just disconnect and spend time with the family and loved ones.
Wonderful - Beautiful and Private
We have visited Maui numerous times and this is the nicest place we have stayed. It was lovely - very private and quiet. I hate to admit that our favorite activity was just hanging out, reading at the pool or on the porch, and cooking in the evening in the nicely equipped kitchen. The property has many interesting birds to watch and listen to. Every day a group of five beautiful white egrets flew in and hung around the far side of the pool. It was fun to see the turtles on the nearby beach. The decor is quite attractive and homey and the kitchen has a professional stove. The TV channels aren't great (Dish TV) but there is Apple TV with Netflix, you can watch your own Amazon Prime, etc). There is no A/C, but in October it was breezy and pleasant, plus there are plenty of ceiling and floor fans, so heat was never a problem. I saw a complaint about the geckos in another review, but those are part of any tropical home scene and are not a pest to be eradicated. Think of them as complimentary house pets. They are cute, make a pleasant chirp, and eat insects. If you don't want to drive back to the airport area for groceries, the large Haiku Market, a full service grocery store, is just a few minutes away, on the other side of Highway 36. Management was attentive and pleasant. This house is a world away from the busy beaches and traffic at Kihei and Wailea, but if you need the beach, those areas are only a few minutes away.
Great stay with kids and grandparents
Excellent, beautiful property. Very well maintained, and well designed. We loved spending time in the pool and on the lovely outdoor deck.
Off the beaten path, but that is part of its charm. We are looking to rebook in a few months. :)

Having never been to Maui I was a little leery to be off the beaten tourist path in up country, however, the location turned out to be perfect. Within a short drive of Pa'ia and Haiku, there are plenty of excellent restaurant choices (make sure to book a reservation at Mama's Fish House ... best meal of our trip). The other benefit of the location is the proximity to the road to Hana (really the property is right at the beginning) and a large number of hikes that would otherwise be an hour drive from the typical beach properties in the south and west of Maui. The property is set in a lush rain forest area that was terrific for the kids (5 and 10) to explore. The lanai provided a great spot to have a coffee in the morning or read a book at night. The house itself was very well done. The large family room area was the perfect place to relax and watch some Netflix at night.
Poo Management and House not being kept up
We stayed here for the first time about 1 year ago, we had such an amazing time that we rebooked for Nov 2016. We were dispointed on our arrival to see that the house has not been kept up as well as the grounds. There was some sort of weed killer on the lawn that turned all our feet blue for days. As other have noted there is a serious bug problem with both mosquitos and others. This particular area would not be advisable in the November time.
We were also blamed for not cleaning properly, we have 4 small children and we had asked for a later checkout to help do a final clean but nobody was available to answer the phone that day. Not sure what their expectations are for cleaning but be sure to get clarification..
All in all its too bad this house is not being managed and kept up as it was a real gem.
I thought I'd share the email received from Dan the day after he arrived at Kulike. This is an exact copy of his email: "Thanks! House is just as great as we remembered from last time!"
We value all of our guests and do everything possible to be sure they have a fabulous Maui vacation.
Late check-out: We try to accommodate this when it fits the schedule. Dan left a message on Thanksgiving Day at check-out time asking for a late departure. By the time we got the message and returned the call, they had already departed.
Each of our rentals is somebody's personal home, and we ask our guests to treat the home with respect. In this case, the housekeeper was appalled when she went to clean the house. There was food on the floor, food on appliances etc, and everything in the house needed serious scrubbing and laundering (including all of the furniture covers). We all know that it’s nice to be on vacation, but we ask guests to leave our homes tidy, with the exception of normal laundry, mopping etc. We don't expect our guests to scrub, but we don't expect the housekeeper to walk in and be ready to cry. We ask that trash be moved to the outdoor cans daily, so don't expect to find the indoor trash cans overflowing, including dirty baby diapers.
Nobody has ever left this charming little house in such horrid condition. I wish I could post, as "a picture is worth a thousand words". Despite this, we refunded their full security deposit, but informed the guest that we would be unable to take a future reservation from them.
It seems that this has resulted in the review that was posted.
A vacation in Haiku Maui is an opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle, and experience a different side of Maui. Set just a few hundred feet above sea level, Kulike is surrounded by tropical vegetation, with a view down to the ocean. Just a few miles down the road is a town center, with a variety of amenities, restaurants and services. Most properties in this area are rural in style, with two acres or more. Tropical vegetation provides a lush, green backdrop to the ocean views.
