The Cottage at Hemlock Grove, located only 50 minutes from I-75 or the Knoxville Airport, tucks you away in extreme privacy and luxury in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Located in a private hollow on 300 acres you can immerse your senses in all that Nature has to offer. Spend days exploring streams, old growth forests, an old mountaineer homestead, and expansive, unspoiled views after hiking to a private mountain top ridge. This is a true Tennessee mountain experience without roughing it!
For its remoteness, this upscale cottage is surprisingly close to many attractions. Bring your jet-skis or boat and enjoy Tellico and Chilhowee Lakes. Boat ramps are just a few miles away. Abundant trout run in gorgeous, rushing, Citico Creek just minutes away. The Citico forest service road runs along the creek for twenty magnificent miles through the Cherokee National Forest to the breathtaking Cherohala Skyway (Hwy 165) and Indian Boundary Lake.
Thirteen trails, within the National Forest, totaling 57.4 miles provide access to much of Citico Creek Wilderness. For a fun day trip, Dollywood and the other attractions of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are less than two scenic hours away (76 miles). Scenic drive enthusiasts will love the proximity to the 'tail of the dragon' or Highway 129 to Deal's Gap.

Beautiful location in the mountains
We rented this property for a family reunion and found it to be even better than expected. It was unusually cold for TN the week we were there but we were toasty warm with the indoor and outdoor wood fireplaces. It was great to have the bunkhouse so the kids could have a space for themselves.
The house is fully equipped with everything you could need for cooking and comfort. It is also very clean and well maintained. Lee and Pat are generous and gracious hosts and customer service is exceptional.
We loved the beautiful hiking trails right on the property and the kids had a blast with a fort building contest. When they got too cold to play outside they had fun with the pool table, Wii, movies and board games. We hope to be back again one day!
Kirsten, Thanks for taking time to write a great review! We are so pleased that your family and all the young people had such a good time at The Cottage @ Hemlock Grove & Bunkhouse! With your family from Canada and others from Florida and Georgia, our location was a perfect way to spend the New Year Celebration! Thanks too for your efforts in looking after the place, a true feat with 11 kids! We welcome you back any time and highly suggest you try one of the warmer seasons like Summer or Fall! Glad you stayed warm even in the Bunkhouse in sub-freezing weather.
Hidden Gem...and I do mean hidden!
After vacationing in the Gatlinburg area of TN for 20 years, I was a little hesitant to try a new area, and one with a house instead of a cabin, at that. Let me tell you...we were NOT disappointed! I'm certain that I don't have enough room to write enough praises, but read through the reviews carefully and you'll get an idea of what awaits you. It's not going to be for everyone. The nearest...anything, is 40 minutes away! If you're stuck to your phone or internet, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an escape, a piece of unconnected paradise to refresh and reconnect, look no further! Hemlock Grove is a destination on its own!
We stayed at Hemlock Grove with 4 adults and 12 children. The bunkhouse was a lifesaver! I'm not sure how we've ever vacationed without one and don't think I'll ever be able to again. The kids loved the pool table and Wii, along with the movie nights...of course all of this only at night because, during the day, this property is a childhood paradise! 300 acres?? We fished at the pond, hiked the numerous trails, roasted Smores, built forts, climbed trees, set up volleyball and soccer in the field that was generously offered, and took time for lots of target practice.
We brought our own food because, like I said, it's a trek for anything. We did venture out one day to visit Fort Loudon. It's beautiful and an interesting trip that's not too far, but there's really no need to go anywhere. Wait until you see the stars at night!
The cottage itself is comfortable and homey. In fact, never before have I left a vacation home without a backache. This was a first at Hemlock! On top of it all, Lee has been so kind and hospitable throughout our entire stay. It really could not have been better! Lord willing, we'll be back!!
Thanks so much for the great review and for letting future guests know exactly what to expect! You said a lot when you said "it's not going to be for everyone" but when you are looking for a mountain/forest vacation destination for 12 children, I think you hit the nail on the head!, as far as a perfect place to stay!
The Fort London State Park and soon-to-reopen Sequoyah Indigenous American Cherokee museum add a touch of old American and Native history that kids can really tap into. In Late October, you timed the turning leaf season just perfectly and even had some weather cool enough to fire up the wood burning stove in the Bunkhouse! We hope you will come back in summer for trout fishing in nearby Citico Creek and lake swimming in Tellico, Chilhowee and Indian Boundary Lakes! The kids will love it! You are welcome back any time.
Perfect unplugged getaway
Beautiful, secluded, plenty of yard for games and lots of hills and trees for hiking. This was the perfect place for our family to celebrate mom and dads 50th anniversary. Lots of family time and no distractions. We had three generations together and there was a little something for everyone.
Thanks so much for the great review! We are so pleased The Cottage and Bunkhouse provided the perfect setting for your family gathering and celebration! We welcome you back any time!
Came for the 2017 Eclipse and stayed for the nature.
We can't say enough nice things about our magical stay at Hemlock Grove! We came to view the total solar eclipse, but got so much more. Lee and Pat were such wonderful, gracious and accommodating hosts and the house and property met our expectations and beyond.
During our stay we hiked up to the ridge for a breathtaking view and took daily hikes through well-maintained paths in the woods. We found an ancestral cemetery on one of the paths and an amazing variety of colorful wild mushrooms! The property was so vast and beautiful, it was like we were in our own private national park. There's no wi-fi or cell service at the house, so you HAD to walk a 1/2 mile round trip to get to wi-fi access, but we only found this to be a plus!
At night, we gathered outside around the fire pit to make s'mores and sat in the hot tub stargazing. The remoteness of the property made this the perfect site for us amateur astronomers, and besides viewing the eclipse in its totality, we saw shooting stars, planets and even satellites clearly in the dark country sky.
When we did decide to venture down into town, we enjoyed swimming in nearby Citico creek, splashing in Bald River falls off the Cherahoula Skyway, sipping wine at the nearby Tsali Notch vineyard and eating pizza at the Venti Pizzeria. And we would be remiss to not mention a stop at Sloane's, where you can get everything, and I mean everything you need, before you venture up into your mountain retreat.
Did I mention baby bunnies? Yeah, there were baby bunnies in their garden. And lightening bugs. MAGIC.
If you are looking for a place to unplug the kids, get back in touch with your family, or just meet up with an old group of friends, look no further than Hemlock Grove. We can't wait to visit again!
Thanks so much for taking the time to write a spectacular review! We know that as the organizer of your large group you took a lot of risk choosing The Cottage at Hemlock Grove as your 2017 Total Eclipse destination. Will everyone be comfortable? Will the property be as described? Will the kitchen be suitable to feed 17 people? These are concerns that only feedback from previous guests can alleviate! Thank you for helping our future guests understand what we offer.
Thank you also for enjoying the property and surrounding area to its fullest! It brings us great joy to expose others to the beauty of this remote part of the Smoky Mountains and Cherokee National Forest. Thanks for leaving the place in great shape. We hope you will come back to visit again soon! You are always welcome! - Lee
Repeat Guests, Repeat Success
Hemlock Grove is just like staying at home...if your home was nestled on 300 gorgeous acres with hiking trails, comfy beds, incredible views, and all the peace and quiet you can imagine. This was our second year staying at the cottage, and our experience was equally as dreamy as our first visit. The home is incredibly cozy, well-appointed, stocked with all the equipment you need to make some "down home" meals, and features an endless array of finishing touches - books (and a hammock to read them on), music (and a great stereo to handle the soundtrack of vacation), firewood and a back deck to enjoy it on, a hot tub out under the stars, and room to roam for any age (we had 6 kids with us). We've visited many, many places and Hemlock Grove will keep drawing us back - the quiet of the woods, the warmth of the hosts, and the memories in the air. It's all good. So, so good.
Thanks for this thoughtful and nicely written review. We are pleased you had great Fall weather and turning leaves this go-round and were able to enjoy the woods and trails. As you mentioned, the Cottage, Bunkhouse and property are great for young people to poke around in the woods and streams. Thanks for your attention to leaving everything in such great shape. We welcome you and your family back at any time.
We were on motorcycles and it was better than the dragon!!! It was an adventure every day leaving and coming back. The house was a throw back to the good old days, the rotary phone, to golden color appliances was so neat. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals, and the deck was great to sit out and drink coffee in the morning. It was great to have the washer and dryer to do laundry, because we only had an extra outfit, so we did laundry every other day.
We did not use the bunkhouse, but if we would have had children, it would have been great! We walked the trail to Barewood Cabin one day to use the internet, but I did not miss the cell or internet service. We was going to use the hot tub, but was always to tired to get in it when we got back. Lee and Patrick had a snack basket waiting for us, and they were the nicest hostess we have every had!! If you are looking for peace and quiet, then Hemlock Grove is your place!!
Patty, Thank you for your great review! I am grateful that you let others know that our Mt. Pleasant Road can be a challenge but that it IS DOABLE, and fun too, for experienced bikers. I think it is one of the most scenic roads around. Thanks for leaving the cottage in great condition and we hope to see your group back again real soon. Perhaps you will try the Fall Season to see the gorgeous leafs. - Lee
