About the property

3 Bedroom + Loft, 2 Bath House With Lake Views

The 'Stealth Cottage' is a completely remodeled historic 90 year old cottage just across Paw Paw Lake Road from beautiful Paw Paw Lake. We have 115 feet of lake frontage right across the street. We are located on what we call 'the Westlund Ponderosa'. It is our family's complex of two cottages, one lake house, and a party barn all on 2 full acres of beautiful wooded property. We have just finished our fortjh summer renting 'the Stealth Cottage'. The cottage sports 3 bedrooms with a loft. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with a small office equipped with a printer & laptop speakers. It has a bath with a corner shower. The washer & dryer are in this bathroom in a closet. The second bedroom still has the original ceiling and door and also has a queen size bed. The third bedroom is a walk through room to the master bedroom and has a full size bed. If you want privacy in that room the master bedroom has a door leading out to the patio. The loft is entered up a ships ladder and has 4 twin beds and a double bed. Not much headroom but a great place to crash out. We sleep a total of 12 in beds. The living room has a double recliner loveseat and a double recliner couch. It has a round table perfect for poker with a leaf to seat 6 for dinner. We also have a 56 inch rear projection TV with full basic cable. Also included is a nice stereo w/ dvd/cd player, and a input for your ipod or personal music player. We have speakers both inside and out on the deck. The kitchen is fully equipped with a new ge microwave, whirlpool self cleaning oven, dishwasher, and fridge with a ice maker. We have settings for 24 and include a mixer, food processor, blender, electric griddle, two cast iron griddles, pizza pans, and plenty of pots and pans for the gourmet chef. We also have a maple table with 4 chairs in the kitchen. Next to the kitchen is our favorite room in the house. It is called the 'moab' which stands for 'the mother of all bars'. It is a fully equipped dry bar with a under counter beer & wine fridge and a wine rack for your local purchases. It has a handmade bar and a round bar table with 6 padded bar stools. We have spent many a night at the 'moab'. For 2014 we completely rebuilt the floor with a new laminate wood floor. Outside we have a 14' x 24' wood deck with 2 tables and comfy chairs. Down two steps is a 14'x16' patio with a picnic table, another glass table with umbrella and a stainless steel natural gas grill with a side burner and side table. We have a outdoor fireplace for your use with an initial supply of firewood. Additional firewood can be purchased for $10 per garage can full. Head down to the lake and you will find a new permanent pier with 2 lifts for our boats. You have your own slip with outer pipes jetted in for a 6 way tie up so your boat will not hit the pier when it gets choppy. We can handle up to a 30' boat. For your use we have a paddle boat and three kayaks. Also down at the lake is 'The Rocking Chair Lounge'. It is a small bar with a tilt up metal roof for security. It has a granite counter top and a raised 12'x8' platform with four southern rocking chairs. It has a small fridge and a kicking stereo with 6 speakers and two subwoofers so you can hear it clearly when you swim off the pier. Next to the 'RCL' is a large concrete patio with a table and two benches for gazing out on the lake. On the back corner of the property we have 'The Party Barn' a 24'x48' concrete floor pole building. Inside is a ping pong table, bumper pool table, foos ball, darts, a multi station free weights area and indoor bags! We have a stereo w/ cd & cassette player and a large TV w/ digital adapter for over the air broadcasts. I have just installed a American Coolair 9,300 CFM industrial wall prop fan with adjustable speed Yaskawa variable frequency drive so it is well ventilated. The kayaks are stored inside. Outside we offer a regulation grass volleyball court with a line set and three sets of bean bag boards. (cornhole) We have a 2000 watt lighting system for both the beanbags and volleyball court. On the far end of the property we have a area for 16 inch softball with bases and homeplate stored in the party barn. There is also room to practice your pitching wedge play. This is the ultimate Paw Paw Lake cottage!! Search 'The Stealth Cottage' on Facebook for more pictures. We encourage our guests to post their pictures on Facebook.

About Dean Westlund

I am Dean Westlund and my Wife is Rory. We live in Lockport, IL. I have been going up to Paw Paw Lake my entire life and my Father Milt was Born just a few miles away in 12 Corners just west of Coloma on Red Arrow Hwy. I am a Sales Engineer selling industrial and commercial HVAC equipment in the Chicago area. We go up to the lake on most weekends. I have a stepson Danny who lives in the area who handles things for me when I am not there.

Dean Westlund purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Dean Westlund chose Michigan

My father Milt bought this property over 30 years ago when it was just two shack cottages with grass up to your knees. My father and I have spent 30 years rebuilding 'The Westlund Ponderosa' from the ground up to what it is today. We built two additions to 5446 while we rented what we call 'The Stealth Cottage' today. About 15 years ago I took over the 'Stealth' and rebuilt it room by room during the winters. The largest project was gutting the Living room, Kitchen, & Screen Porch and building the Great Room, Kitchen, & Loft we have today. I also converted a one car garage into a Master Bedroom and Bath. For several years I still had the working garage door in my Bedroom. When we would go golfing in the morning I would lift open the door and with my clubs and head out for our 7:30 Tee Time. We then converted the front Utility room into a bar. My friend Todd and I built a Deck and Patio about 5 years ago. Several years ago we completely rebuilt the Lakefront adding a permanant pier, Large bolder seawall and the bar at the lake. This property has been a labor of love for my father and I. Unfortunately we lost my father several years ago at the ripe old age of 88. My mother passed away this spring so we are renting the Stealth Cottage to be able to keep it in the family. So its a win win in my opinion. I hope to meet new renters who may become friends and come back for years to come and you get to enjoy what is probably the most fun property in all the area!!

What makes this cottage unique

We have the rare combination of land and Paw Paw Lake. Most of the lake residents have small lots without much land. By being just across the road from the lake but with 115 feet on it we were able to aquire 2 + acres of land. So you have lots of room for your family and friends. No worries about parking or storing your boat trailer. All in a historic cottage with all the anemities of a modern house. We have hosted weddings, receptions, pizza partys, graduations, birthday partys, girls & guys weekends out, winery tour weekend, bike tour weekends, and golf weekends, and other events for up to 80 people. You will not be disapointed.

Very nice vacation getaway on the lake!

  • 4 of 5

Property was very nice, clean, very well maintained, lots of bedrooms and space. The party bar by the water is a lot of fun. We didn't get a chance to use the party barn/game room so can't say about that. Owner was very nice and very accommodating, let us arrive early and leave late. There is a fun bar a 10 minute walk down the road with karaoke on the weekends, and a beer/liquor store about 5 minutes walk. A few notes: if you have a large group with adults, be advised the loft sleeping area is very tight, especially for taller/larger individuals. Also, the pictures are a bit misleading - there is actually a busy road between the house and the lake. Not a big deal, but if you have kids may be an issue. Overall very nice, enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: We enjoyed having your group up and were glad you had a great time. It looked like you were having fun at the lake with the nice fire. Our loft was wedged into a 25' x 25' attic with a 6/12 pitch roof so the headroom in the middle is about 5'8". So watch your head when you are up there. As for Paw Paw Lake Road. It is the main road around the lake but it is not a county highway and has very little truck traffic. It is a 2 lane road with a bike lane on both sides. It is not real busy but I have had to wait for several cars or Harley's to pass from time to time. It does not show up on the pictures because it is lower than the front yard and you don't see it from the cottage to much. Dean

Unique, Entertainment oriented, Classic Michigan

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the stealth cottage for a guys weekend / fishing trip and could not have had a better time. The Stealth Cottage has everything you need and nothing that you don't. Just a short stroll and you are on the water, relaxing at the "rocking chair lounge" (a pop up bar on the dock). The fishing was good, the fire pit was fantastic and the "party barn" was perfect for when some want to turn in but others want to continue to socialize. Overall, 5 stars. Thanks Dean!

A great place to have fun!

  • 4 of 5

This house appears small from the outside, but has room to sleep lots of people comfortably. The fully appointed kitchen, washer/dryer, large TV and sound system are plusses. Outside the house is a large yard, decks with grill and multiple picnic tables and chairs, and the adjacent barn with games were nice. A favorite was the Rocking Chair Lounge and Tiki Bar at the lakeside. Unfortunately, it rained the morning we planned to use the kayaks and paddleboat, but that was available, too. Honestly, i was just looking for a place to sleep--this offered much more. You can tell a lot of people have had a lot of fun here!

Great place for adults and kids!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the Stealth Cottage during our vacation in July. The weather was very warm but sitting in the rocking chairs by the lake with a cold drink we didn't even notice. For the first part of the week we had 6 kids and 4 adults and never felt cramped or overly crowded. The kids all had a blast swimming, jumping off the dock and heading out in the paddle boat. We visited near by beaches and towns on Lake Michigan just a short drive away and had a great time. Plenty to see and do both at the cottage and in the surrounding cities. We are already setting up a vacation for next year for all of us to come back and can't wait! My kids were asking about going back before we even had the car packed to head home.

Very comfortable family fun house!

  • 4 of 5

This is the third year I've gone to the Stealth Cottage for a family vacation. A very comfortable house, with a big deck, lots of lawn space, and right across the street from a dock, lounge, and launching area for kayaks into Paw Paw Lake. Our family loves it. This year there was a bit more activity on the dock area from nearby families than we had had in the past, but for the most part we were able to enjoy our time together in comfort and peace. There were also non-functional refrigerators on-site when we arrived, but we were able to arrange for a substitute fridge till the weekend was over, at which point a new one was delivered.

This is a great location, a relatively short drive from numerous Lake Michigan coastal towns and parks, with plenty of nearby Dunes action. A very nice, relaxing, roomy place to stay with family.

We are one of the closest cottages to the old 'Crystal Palace Ballroom' and we may have hosted some of the bands who played there. Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, Harry James, Perry Como, Louie Armstrong, Lawrence Welk, Bob Crosby, Benny Goodman, among others all played at the Crystal Palace and many may have stayed at our cottage at one point or another. Way before we owned it though.
