Heron Ledge – Watkins Glen Cliffside View

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,650 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bath, lakefront view property

If you’re planning a trip to the Finger Lakes, Heron Ledge has just what you want: privacy, massive view, large decks, open floor plan, and contemporary accommodations. Only minutes from Watkins Glen, the home is perched 125’ above the lake on a cliff known as the “Painted Rocks.” Located on the east side of Seneca, you will be spoiled with breathtaking sunsets. This is the perfect “base camp” for exploring the wineries on both the east and west sides of Seneca Lake. If the wine trail doesn’t keep you busy enough, explore the cheese trail, tour the local waterfalls, or rent a boat in Watkins Glen for your own personal tour of the lake.

The first floor of the house has an open floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake. The kitchen, living room, and dining area flow together for easy socialization. The kitchen is appointed with a large pantry; you are stocked with all of your cooking needs. Basic herbs, spices, and condiments are provided. A new refrigerator/freezer and state of the art dishwasher accompany a gas range, microwave, and Kuerig coffee maker. Pots, pans, baking dishes, and a full complement of serving ware ensure you have everything you need for homemade meals. A furnished sunroom is located off the kitchen for enjoying a good book in the afternoon, and the loft offers an additional sitting area with a coffee table, love seat, futon sofa (that converts to a sleeping space) and a desk. A wireless printer and paper are provided for your personal use to print out wine tour itineraries and maps.

The lower level of the house contains the master bedroom, guest room, and a beautifully tiled bathroom. The master bedroom has a king size bed, walk-in closet, lake view, and a private entrance onto the deck. The guest bedroom is furnished with a queen size bed, dresser, end tables, closet, and lake view. Towels and linens are provided.

The living room is equipped with a 47” flat screen TV, Blu-ray DVD player, and a surround sound system. Standard cable TV with over 100 HD stations and high speed wireless internet is also provided. All of the entertainment components are Wi-Fi enabled with access to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, etc. There are hundreds of channels of internet radio to choose from too. If you are looking for more traditional forms of entertainment, we also have board games for all ages, playing cards, dominoes, and jig saw puzzles. Forgot to bring a book? We have two large bookcases filled with almost 500 books to read! But most likely you will be content to sit out on one of the 3 amazing decks with a glass of wine to enjoy Seneca Lake.

This year-round house was custom designed and is well maintained. A dishwasher and washer/dryer are provided. The lower level has radiant heat through the concrete floor, and the upper level has two Mitsubishi heating and cooling units to keep the house comfortable in any weather. The fireplace on the main floor adds ambiance and therapeutic warmth on a cold winter night. The HRV central ventilation system continuously circulates fresh air throughout the house. A Weber gas grill on the deck delivers quick and convenient meals.

Outdoors, we have over 3 acres of naturally wooded hillside. Mature oak, hickory, and maple trees create lush shade in the summer time. In the fall, the colors are unbelievably beautiful. Natural stone steps wind down to a spacious lower level with a fire ring, all inlaid with large shale flagstones. The stone steps continue down to a huge observation deck on the edge of the cliff. Epic views over the lake, and down on the fishermen. The nighttime lights of Watkins Glen will captivate you.

Heron Ledge has 800’ of natural lake frontage, but unfortunately, convenient lake access from the property is not available. If you need to get your feet wet, Clute Park is only a short drive away. With its soft silty bottom, and warm shallow water, it’s the preferred place for locals to swim. This is NOT a traditional vacation rental with direct access to the water, but the privacy and panorama over Seneca Lake is unmatched. We call the nighttime view of Watkins Glen our mini-Manhattan. The hardest part about coming to Heron Ledge is leaving!

About Suzanne

We grew up in the Finger Lakes and spent most of our weekends at either Seneca or Keuka Lake when we were younger. We love the climate, the change of seasons, and the national recognition of the regions wine industry that continues to develop over the years.

Suzanne purchased this house in 2012

Why Suzanne chose Burdett

The east side of Seneca Lake offers beautiful sunsets on a nightly basis! We are close to Watkins Glen for convenient shopping, and also central to Ithaca, Elmira, or Corning. If you want to visit the local wineries, we are at the end of the lake, so you can head up either the east or west side of Seneca for your tour.

What makes this house unique

Location, Location, Location! There are no other cottages around us, you have complete privacy to do as you please. This end of the lake is very popular with boaters, and the fishing is superb in front of the house. From the observation deck 125’ above the lake, you have a commanding view over all of this activity.

Magnificent home overlooking Seneca Lake

  • 5 of 5

I had been looking for a rental in the finger lakes region, and this home was perfect. Immaculate inside and out, with three decks overlooking the lake. Everything was supplied, linens, towels, all cooking utensils and it even had a well stocked pantry that we could use. The furniture was comfortable and it had a library loaded with books. It was close to restaurants, shopping and wineries. The owner supplied notes and information about them. My wife and I would definitely return to this exquisite home on the lake.

Fabulous view with comfort and class!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at Heron Ledge, a very convenient place to stay in the middle of the Finger Lakes region. As usual, the house is extremely well stocked with supplies and cooking condiments. There is a Keurig coffeemaker, a Panini maker and a crock pot, among other amenities. Firewood for the indoor and outdoor fireplaces. Beautiful decks with seating to eat out and enjoy the views.

The only caution we have, which is due to the cliffside location, is a tricky turnaround in the narrow driveway. This is not a place for a poor driver, a large vehicle, or someone who cannot handle a lot of stairs. Once you turn around and back down to the house, loading/unloading is very convenient right a ground level on the first floor.

In our case, we're already making our reservation for next year.

Home base for FLX Wine Country

  • 5 of 5

We spent quite a bit of time researching where to make our home base and chose Watkins Glen. Our time spent researching really paid off as we found a real gem of a house for us (+ another couple). We have stayed at many VRBO's and this one is by far the best appointed (while not being cluttered with personal effects). We cooked twice and were also centrally located for hiking the Glen and Seneca Lake wineries (don't miss out on the cannoli's at Scuteri's!). We made a game of trying to think of something this place didn't have and the best we could come up with was a wine decanter (and that may only be because we didn't look in the right place). Stunning view of the lake off of the deck made for great evenings. I would stay here again without hesitation. Sleeps four easily in two bedrooms + you could use the pull out in the loft if needed.

The house, location and comfort level was exceptional.

  • 5 of 5

Once you get used to the driveway, the experience is wonderful. The levels of outside seating is great and the fire pit made for some fun evenings with exceptional views. The bedrooms and living space were very comfortable. I have never stayed st a rental home that was so well stocked with dishes, pans, accessories and staples. The owners have thought of everything!

This property was wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved staying at Heron Ledge. Being on the cliff looking over the water was just beautiful. The house was clean, and very well organized and appointed. Everything we needed was there. The owner was a gracious host and clearly loves and cares for her home, making us feel like friends, not renters.
