Burdett House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom, 2 bath, lakefront view property

If you’re planning a trip to the Finger Lakes, Heron Ledge has just what you want: privacy, massive view, large decks, open floor plan, and contemporary accommodations. Only minutes from Watkins Glen, the home is perched 125’ above the lake on a cliff known as the “Painted Rocks.” Located on the east side of Seneca, you will be spoiled with breathtaking sunsets. This is the perfect “base camp” for exploring the wineries on both the east and west sides of Seneca Lake. If the wine trail doesn’t keep you busy enough, explore the cheese trail, tour the local waterfalls, or rent a boat in Watkins Glen for your own personal tour of the lake.

The first floor of the house has an open floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake. The kitchen, living room, and dining area flow together for easy socialization. The kitchen is appointed with a large pantry; you are stocked with all of your cooking needs. Basic herbs, spices, and condiments are provided. A new refrigerator/freezer and state of the art dishwasher accompany a gas range, microwave, and Kuerig coffee maker. Pots, pans, baking dishes, and a full complement of serving ware ensure you have everything you need for homemade meals. A furnished sunroom is located off the kitchen for enjoying a good book in the afternoon, and the loft offers an additional sitting area with a coffee table, love seat, futon sofa (that converts to a sleeping space) and a desk. A wireless printer and paper are provided for your personal use to print out wine tour itineraries and maps.

The lower level of the house contains the master bedroom, guest room, and a beautifully tiled bathroom. The master bedroom has a king size bed, walk-in closet, lake view, and a private entrance onto the deck. The guest bedroom is furnished with a queen size bed, dresser, end tables, closet, and lake view. Towels and linens are provided.

The living room is equipped with a 47” flat screen TV, Blu-ray DVD player, and a surround sound system. Standard cable TV with over 100 HD stations and high speed wireless internet is also provided. All of the entertainment components are Wi-Fi enabled with access to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, etc. There are hundreds of channels of internet radio to choose from too. If you are looking for more traditional forms of entertainment, we also have board games for all ages, playing cards, dominoes, and jig saw puzzles. Forgot to bring a book? We have two large bookcases filled with almost 500 books to read! But most likely you will be content to sit out on one of the 3 amazing decks with a glass of wine to enjoy Seneca Lake.

This year-round house was custom designed and is well maintained. A dishwasher and washer/dryer are provided. The lower level has radiant heat through the concrete floor, and the upper level has two Mitsubishi heating and cooling units to keep the house comfortable in any weather. The fireplace on the main floor adds ambiance and therapeutic warmth on a cold winter night. The HRV central ventilation system continuously circulates fresh air throughout the house. A Weber gas grill on the deck delivers quick and convenient meals.

Outdoors, we have over 3 acres of naturally wooded hillside. Mature oak, hickory, and maple trees create lush shade in the summer time. In the fall, the colors are unbelievably beautiful. Natural stone steps wind down to a spacious lower level with a fire ring, all inlaid with large shale flagstones. The stone steps continue down to a huge observation deck on the edge of the cliff. Epic views over the lake, and down on the fishermen. The nighttime lights of Watkins Glen will captivate you.

Heron Ledge is marketed as an amazing view property with privacy, but it also has 800’ of natural shale beach. Locals know this property as the “Painted Rocks” and it features centuries-old cliff-side painted illustrations commemorating the indians’ escape from General Sullivan’s war campaign. The paintings have been restored over the years, and an American flag and tee-pee were added in 1929. The Painted Rocks remain an important landmark and icon to Seneca Lake boaters and its lore. Access to the beach, however, is not a casual affair. It involves a long hike down steep slopes with a short vertical climb at the end. The path is not well defined (follow the orange flagging), but your reward will be a huge private beach with a dock. This is NOT a traditional vacation rental with direct access to the lake, but if you have full mobility and plenty of energy, you can get there!

About Suzanne

We grew up in the Finger Lakes and spent most of our weekends at either Seneca or Keuka Lake when we were younger. We love the climate, the change of seasons, and the national recognition of the regions wine industry that continues to develop over the years.

Suzanne purchased this house in 2012

Why Suzanne chose Seneca Lake

The east side of Seneca Lake offers beautiful sunsets on a nightly basis! We are close to Watkins Glen for convenient shopping, and also central to Ithaca, Elmira, or Corning. If you want to visit the local wineries, we are at the end of the lake, so you can head up either the east or west side of Seneca for your tour.

What makes this house unique

Location, Location, Location! There are no other cottages around us, you have complete privacy to do as you please. This end of the lake is very popular with boaters, and the fishing is superb in front of the house. From the observation deck 125’ above the lake, you have a commanding view over all of this activity.

Privacy & peaceful bliss..

  • 5 of 5

This house has an amazing layout and so many places, as others have described, to just sit back, relax and take in the views. We absolutely took advantage of every single one of them. Having the fire pit outside at night was also fun and relaxing.

My husband and I were there with my parents who are in their 70s. I had them use a walking stick to negotiate the steps outside, and as long as they took their time, they were absolutely fine. Part of the fun of this house is getting up and down to all the levels outside to enjoy the outstanding views of Lake, trees & sunsets.

We were surprised to see there really aren't many houses available besides this one (that we saw for rent) in this area with the same views and so close to town.

We also had a great time at night when it was dark watching very scary movies (free amazon/netflix) and listening to their incredible surround sound system. It was a perfect setting and just so cozy.. we all felt at home (Although very scared after watching movies haha)

Suzanne was very responsive and helpful with all of my questions and gave us some great suggestions as well.

We would all highly recommend staying here.

Perfect place to stay in the Finger Lakes

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd time staying at Heron Ledge and we expect to return many times in the future. The house is a beautiful architectural home, with a fantastic view over the lake and hills. Everything was clean and it is very comfortable to stay in. The pantry is like an on-site grocery store, with everything you can imagine for cooking, paper and cleaning supplies. There is a huge library of books and plenty of games. We like the ease of moving in and out through the front door right next to your car--no stairs or long walks.

The living area is comfortable with a large flat screen TV. There is a nice sun-room and plenty of decks. The shades in the bedrooms are very light blocking for sleeping in--but open nicely for seeing the view. The Wi-fi works well. There are plenty of linens.

All in all, one of the best VRBO rentals we have had--and we have stayed at probably 25 or more VRBO rentals from the East Coast to Italy and California.

The location is perfect in the center of the Finger Lakes with easy access to all of the lakes and cities of Ithaca, Corning, Geneva, Canandaigua, Rochester and Syracuse, etc. Watkins Glen has lots of good restaurants and wineries abound. You can relax in the house or tour the area as you wish.

We do advise future guest to always approach the driveway from the south, as it is difficult to turn around to enter the driveway. And be extremely careful when leaving to avoid high speed traffic on Rt. 414. This is not hard to do, but just plan accordingly.

Amazing home and views!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived with family from Texas to a beautiful home. The photos do not do it justice. The home is situated high above the lake with stunning views and sunsets. Early morning coffee on the multiple decks start your day off. The local wineries on both the east side and the west side are easy and close to get to. Local large grocery stores and farm stands provide all you need should you decide to prepare meals at home...which we did all but one night. The pantry is unbelievable! Large well stocked pantry offers access to anything you could possibly need and again the grocery is so close it is super easy to replace what you have used. The home is nicely equipped with all appliances, WiFi, large TV.....etc. Linens are in abundance as well as extra blankets and pillows. Suz and Eric are VERY responsive to emails and texts and actually had many suggestions for favorite wineries etc. We enjoyed several wineries...Red Newt was great ask for Heather. You will learn everything about the region and its wine. Atwater has amazing views. Take a ride up to Ventosa Vineyards for the Wednesday 5-6:00 happy hour followed by music till 9:00. Glenora is also a great view on the other side of the lake. Take half a day and check out the Corning Glass Museum..it was fantastic! If you have children with you or you love animals or even just love goat cheese, Lively Run Dairy Farm is super cute! We did a cheese tasting and played with the goats! If you are up for more fun and a heartwarming day..visit Farm Sanctuary. This educational farm animal sanctuary takes in animals from all sorts of situations and gives them a safe loving environment to thrive in. This home is in the perfect location for an adventurous day or a relaxing day on the decks. Prepare for amazing sunsets with a glass of local wine!!!!!!! We could not have been happier with the home, its amenities and location to attractions. Thank you Suz and Eric for this wonderful family experience creating new memories! We hope to see you next fall.

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

The owners, Suze and Eric, were responsive and the property was exactly as described in the owner's write up. We drove up to the house and were quite pleased upon entry. The floor plan was nice and open and the house was very clean. My husband and I stayed with our 16 & 18 year old sons, who each brought a friend. The house is privately located and the lake views are amazing! We spent lots of time on the upper and lower decks just taking in the view. The fire pit was nice to use and turns out the weather was good enough for us to take advantage of it. There were lots of books and games, encouraging you to settle in and play a rousing game or read. The owners of the property supplied everything you could want and more. I would definitely recommend the property and would stay again.

Six days of HEAVEN!

  • 5 of 5

This is a special place. The view of Seneca Lake is spectacular from inside, from the decks on two levels, one of which extends quite a distance parallel to the lake, and on the ledge deck, set away from the house. Inside, the house is casually elegant and is in pristine condition. There are books and games galore, a carefully compiled compendium of area activities of all kinds, dining opportunities, as well as important and informative local information. The house is very secluded but is only a couple of miles from the town of Watkins Glen and the scenic Watkins Glen State Park. It is right along the Wine Trail route, and near to the marina and boat tours. Perhaps the most surprising, and appreciated touch offered by the property is the kitchen with all the glassware, dishes, pots and pans, and virtually any utensil you could want. Even more impressive is the fully (and I mean fully) stocked pantry which the owners allow you to share - (but request that you replace items used). There is an excellent gas grill right outside the kitchen. And with the best view of the lake available right there, why would you go out to eat and miss a private dinner by sunset? This secluded place was a joy to my husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law. We were quite disappointed when we had to leave. It is highly recommended

A Beautiful Retreat on Seneca Lake!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at Heron Ledge! The property was immaculate and the views of the lake were breathtaking. The living space was comfortable and contemporary, and all of the amenities were exactly as specified. The owners of the property went out of their way to provide current information about the Finger Lakes region and were exceptional communicators throughout the rental process.

We eagerly look forward to a future stay at Heron Ledge and highly recommend the experience to others!
