About Barry

I've been coming to Carmel for 15 years and find something new to explore each time. Originally from the midwest, I left the harsh winters behind and moved to California to pursue a career in design. Carmel is my refuge from the buzz of daily life and I hope it will be yours, too. I've been renovating and renting fully furnished homes for almost 20 years and this original style beach cottage in downtown Carmel is definitely my favorite so far.

Barry purchased this house in 2013

Why Barry chose Golden Rectangle

I've been looking for a home in Carmel for years, and I bought this one the day it came on the market. It's one of the original and authentic homes of historic Carmel, made entirely of old growth redwood - you just can't find homes like this one anymore. Plus the double sized lot with some of the oldest Oak trees in Carmel make this property serene and calming. The owners were a couple in their early 90's who got married when they were twenty and lived in this house their entire lives, raising their children and hosting their grand kids for decades. Inside one of the cabinets in the laundry room you can still find an original fruit drying rack which I left intact for the sake of history. That rack is what inspired some of the farmhouse touches I used throughout the renovation such as the barn style light fixtures, vintage Edison filament bulbs, and antique rim latch hardware on the doors.

What makes this house unique

This studio is surrounded by large windows with screens on three out of four sides filling the room with incredible sunlight (on days that aren't foggy!) and fresh ocean breezes. There are blackout shades on the windows if you'd like to sleep in, though. The large king bed has 1200 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets with Belgian linen duvet cover and pillow shams. Everything is top of the line.

A wonderful, relaxing June stay in beautiful Carmel

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a memorable month in Barry’s lovely little cottage amid the heritage oaks and beautiful landscaping. It was like being in a treehouse and came complete with tree-hopping squirrels and an adorable little rabbit. The cottage is compact, comfortable, beautifully decorated and the fully-equipped kitchen was perfect for some home-cooked meals when we didn’t want to dine out. The queen bed and luxurious linens made it difficult to get out of bed some mornings.

We were particularly delighted to be so close to both downtown Carmel and the Scenic Drive along the beach. We parked our car and walked almost everywhere except for shopping and sightseeing trips.

Barry is a wonderful host and checked in on us several times to be sure we wanted for nothing. There was a bottle of wine, cheese, and crackers awaiting us when we arrived and he brought by a bottle of champagne and local chocolates for our anniversary. He is an invaluable source of information about local restaurants and points of interest.

We had a wonderful vacation at “Carmel’s Coziest Cottage” and look forward to returning in the future.

Comfy-Cozy Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Just walking down the little path was delightful and representative of the charm of the cottage. We loved it instantly and felt comfortable the entire week! The quality of the decor and furnishings are top of the line. We love this darling cottage and plan to return in the future. Barry responds immediately, which is a nice touch as well.

Cozy Cottage in the Middle of Town with Everything You Need

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I loved our stay at the Cozy Cottage. It had everything we needed, beyond conveniently located and our host Barry was very responsive and thoughtful. The cottage is perfect for a couple and we stayed here for a week. We were able to cook a few meals within the cottage, do laundry and enjoy the other amenities. It was so nice to be able to take a quick stroll to all our favorite restaurants and shops in downtown Carmel, as well as, a quick walk to the beach in the evenings. Lastly, Barry is the most attentive and thoughtful host. He is super responsive and wants nothing but his guests to have an amazing time in his favorite place, Carmel. We definitely felt the love! When we return to Carmel, we'll definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Puja and Tim, it's always wonderful to have guests like you who love to explore the area and experience everything Carmel has to offer! I'd be happy to help you find your own place if and when you decide to move here, but in the meantime you are welcome to always consider this cozy cottage as your home away from home in Carmel. I wish you both all the best in your work/life journeys!

Cozy Fairy-tale Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in Barry’s cozy cottage.

You start with a walk down a tastefully landscaped serpentine walkway to the cottage, where wine and cheese and chocolates are waiting for you. The décor has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. You keep discovering little touches here and there that make staying there such a nice experience. It was everything we expected based on the pictures, and more.

Barry was a welcoming, but not a helicopter host. We saw him briefly after arrival, and then he faded into the background. Nevertheless, he was always quickly available via SMS if we needed something. We had a small issue with the heat that was quickly fixed.

Conveniently located for a walk into the center of Carmel on Ocean street.

At our age, however, we discovered that it was better to drive to the beach; we could walk further along the coast, if we did not have to climb the hill back to the cottage.

Handily located for trips to Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove, the Asilomar State Beach, 17-mile Drive, Point Lobos, Big Sur, the Monterey Aquarium (loved those free passes to the Aquarium).

The laundry facilities were much appreciated. Everything we needed from washer to dryer to detergent to bounce.

The compact kitchen has everything you need to cook for yourself; there are a Safeway and a Lucky’s just down Rio Road; but there are restaurants enough nearby for when you don’t feel like cooking. We can recommend the open-air hamburger grill at Nielsen Bros Market on San Carlos St. for lunch.

The speedy wi-fi is handy for getting last-minute instructions about opening times for things like Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, the Aquarium and the Mission, and instructions on how to drive there, and where to park. It was also handy for sending the inevitable ‘having a great time’ photos to folks at home.

Before booking our trip, I researched to accommodations in the area, and determined that Barry’s cozy cottage was the best deal on the peninsula. The proof of the cottage was in staying there: it was absolutely the best choice.

The next time our travel plans call for a visit to the Monterey Peninsula, this is where we’ll stay.

I always love hosting artists, writers, and musicians at this property, given Carmel's historic roots in the arts scene. Thank you for sharing your novels and your mother's children's books. I hope to enjoy them very soon. Please know you are always welcome back at the cozy cottage in Carmel, and I hope you will consider us to be your home away from home. All my best to you.
