A few caveats for this lovely space

  • 3 of 5

This was our 3rd time at Sunset Dunes. We love it for our extended family. The house has a smart layout that works well for our 10+/- sized group. Lots of break out spaces so you don't feel confined. Generous kitchen and pantry area, hot tub is hot, home is clean upon arrival. This is our 3rd time staying here because we love that the pingpong table is centrally located instead of being exiled to the garage. There was sufficient seating around the dining table for 10.

I downgraded the rating because of some maintenance issues. A bedroom window shade had a huge gash across it, 1/2 of the hot tub jets still broken, ice machine and water line in the fridge are broken, mattress pad missing, night light in master bathroom & misc other light bulbs out, no bath soap in any shower and only 2 washcloths in the whole house. As noted in previous reviews, management is helpful, but who wants to keep calling the manager?!

Also, the laundry policy will keep you on your toes the night before you leave. Getting all the towels washed, dried and put away made our last 12 hours hectic. I suggest bringing your own towels for bath and kitchen, if you live locally. That will alleviate the last minute added laundry stress as you try to get out by 11am.

If temps are hovering around 30, take care with the exterior steps. My husband fell down them as they were slippery and invisibly icy. There is no tread on them. There is a ramp access, but it too can be slippery in inclement weather.

We love this house and returned, despite the cautions in other reviews. I hope you will give it a try and prepare to enjoy this wonderful space. Just know what to bring/expect. It's more like using a relative's house with a few quirks. Oh, and have the manager's phone # on hand.

Do Not Come with High Expectations

  • 2 of 5

While livable, the house does not appear to get much TLC. Only the bare minimum seems put forth for overall cleanliness and general maintenance. Couch upstairs had a 3-foot slit across the back. Unrepaired wall dings evident in several locations. Half the jets on the hot tub don’t work. Tub and sink drains in 2 of the 3 bathrooms were clogged. Outdoor railings covered with cobwebs, mold present in the slider door jamb upstairs. Numerous little things like no trash bags, broken can-opener. The entire place was in serious need of a deep cleaning inside and out.

Perfect For Bigger Groups

  • 4 of 5

This house was very spacious and fit all 11 people in my group very well. The distance from Tillamook to the home wasn't too far so just in case we forgot anything it was an easy trip into town. Being only minutes away from the beach was also a great characteristic to the home, I wish there would have been a trail down to the beach so we could have walked instead of drove each time. The large upstairs loft/living room area was a hit for everyone to meet up after a long day and the large kitchen with the island made it easy to talk about our day. Having the hot tub was also a hit for everyone to use after being out all day even though the location of it was a little different. The home was beautiful and seemed to be well taken care of, and the staff was also very pleasant to talk with. The only problem that was had while being at the home was the front door not locking and closing every time, and also the dirty pans that were thrown under the stove I'm assuming by the last guest. All in all though, we enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend the house to anyone!

Large House - Perfect for a Large Group

  • 4 of 5

My family was looking for a large home to rent for our vacation, and this did not disappoint. Each floor is as big as a standard home, so its like having two homes, one on top of the other. The most positive thing I can say is that whenever something went wrong, Heather took care of it. She'd come out and fix it for us, which was very nice.

Pros:

Large Home

Multiple Bedrooms

Very Well Insulated (You don't feel all wet or sticky in bed at night)

Hot Tub was Awesome

VERY Quiet Neighborhood

Cons:

Barbecue was missing (This was resolved later)

Fire pit is more of a 'fire hole'

Limited view of the ocean (just one little patch can be seen from upstairs)

All in all, I enjoyed the stay. I would not recommend it though for elderly people or those with very young children who like to wander. It's large stair cases make it kind of a concern in that regards.

I would recommend this property to my friends and would stay again.

Look for the opening at the base of Maxwell Mountain that takes you to Lost Boy Beach on the other side! It’s a great place to find agates and seashells.

The Cape Meares Lighthouse and the Octopus Tree is just a mile outside of town. There are hiking trails around the park that go down to Cape Meares beach, just a couple of blocks away.
