About Stephen and/or Gayle Saunders

Owner/Managers - Stephen and Gayle Saunders are business owners, and Stephen was a building contractor, and together they built their dream ranch.

They have been owners, breeders, trainers, and show exhibiters of Peruvian Horses since 1989.

Stephen and/or Gayle Saunders purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Stephen and/or Gayle Saunders chose Catheys Valley

Catheys Valley has an almost pastoral quality with many large and small ranches. RoundHat Ranch is nestled at the foot of Guadalupe Mt. on gently sloping all-usable terrain, with several knolls giving 360 degree views. And the proximity to Yosemite Park made our decision to live here easy.

What makes this cottage unique

To move about the entire property easily, the many pastures have tree-lined trails between. This allows guests to observe all the area and animals up close and in an almost parklike experience.

For those who like photography, there is ample inspiration. Varied wildlife can be seen daily.

The 'Cottage' is set within and yet apart from the ranch by its own privately fenced area, encompassing large mature Oak trees, shade-cloth arbor covered patios, fountain, all-weather covered patio, double chair swing,

and outdoor shower. All with an intimate view of the ranch and distant mountain, valley and meadow views.

The seasons at RoundHat Ranch are distinct and each has its own attractive elements, there are no weather related access problems to the ranch or to Yosemite Valley along Highway 140.

From RoundHat Ranch, it is 3.3 miles to restaurant, gas, and convenience store at the Catheys Valley crossroads, then it is 10 scenic miles to the historic mining town of Mariposa, another 12 scenic miles later, you enter the spectacular Merced River Gorge (this is the beginning of your Yosemite experience) traveling along the river (Hwy 140) straight into Yosemite Valley. The Arch, West Yosemite Park Entrance (beginning of the Valley), is 45 miles from the ranch, but be advised the scenic beauty may cause you to stop, observe, or linger along the way, so, time to Yosemite Valley varies.

Catheys Valley is in Mariposa County along State Highway 140 to Yosemite. It is an area of Oak Woodlands, Knolls, Hills, and Meadows, with the Sierra Mountains and Yosemite bordering to the east. Many old Chinese rock walls define old boundaries and are now historical preservation sites.

Catheys Valley has a rural ranching lifestyle of small and large ranches, the kind you see while traveling, and wonder how you can experience it for yourself.

RoundHat Ranch puts you into that experience, where you can get the sights, sounds, and feel of ranch living.

Nature is the attraction and the main activity with quiet, space, and privacy as amenities.

The sights can give inspiration to the photographer and nature lover, like it did to Ansel Adams and John Muir.

Less than one mile from RoundHat Ranch is 'The StoneHouse', where naturalist John Muir and President Theodore Roosevelt stayed while making Yosemite a National Park. During that time, a certain Hiram Walker was granted an original land patent for 40 acres, signed by then President, Theodore Roosevelt, and today, is RoundHat Ranch.

The seasons at RoundHat ranch are distinct, and each bring their own special experiences and views.

There are many boating and fishing lakes, streams, and rivers in the Yosemite foothills and mountains.

River rafting in the Merced River Gorge, a designated wild and scenic river, along Highway 140 into Yosemite, is popular late Spring to early Fall.

Of course, all things Yosemite are on the menu, and the Ranch affords a great respite after a day in the Park, away from the crowd.

Fantastic stay near Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

The Roundhat Horse Ranch was a fantastic choice during our vacation to Yosemite for me and my significant other. We stayed at the cottage and drove to Yosemite each of the days that we stayed. While the drive was a little long (45 mins to an hour in light traffic), we did not mind it as the drive was scenic and we benefited from the secluded location of the cottage.

In terms of amenities, the cottage had everything we needed. We made breakfast, lunch, and dinner almost every day. Enjoyed the porch with warm coffee and tea in the mornings and evenings, and took in the landscape in complete privacy. In terms of the quality of the lodging, I honestly preferred the cottage to the top floor suite we stayed in at the Le Meridien in downtown San Francisco. The bed was very comfortable, the views incredible, and the property was very clean.

If you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy nature, then I recommend staying here. The drive is most certainly worth it.

A Gem.

  • 5 of 5

A terrific get-away to celebrate a special occasion. Some points of interest we enjoyed; Merced River hike, Pioneer Market shopping, Oasis Mexican food, Hideout (named appropriately) Tavern, self guided wine tour of RoundHat Ranch, and many more. A nicely appointed cottage, the queen bed was a tad soft for us, but the outdoor shower more than made up for any lost sleep. We stayed-in for dinner, grilled pizza and a roast. Everything we needed was in reach.

Much Thanks!

5-night stay at the Round Hat Ranch

  • 5 of 5

We booked our stay almost a year in advance planning a Yosemite vacation. God blessed us with two vacations in one. We enjoyed our stay at the Round Hat Ranch just as much as we did our time in Yosemite. Every aspect of the cottage reflects the love that Stephen & Gayle have for the ranch, from the thoughtful amenities in the cottage to the trees & flowering plants & the loving care of the animals. As animal lovers we also enjoyed the symphony of sounds--horses neighing, donkeys braying, coyotes singing & roosters crowing. We also appreciated Stephens good advice in how to maximize our activities in the park. His advice was invaluable & was a real blessing.

Total Relaxation Cottage after hiking in Yosemite.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 2 nights / 3 days at this great cottage off the beaten path while visiting Yosemite. The cottage is decorated perfectly , is spacious and meticulously clean ( which is major plus for me. ) We were met by Steve , the owner upon check in and he was very helpful in showing us around and suggesting things to do in the area.

The cottage is 13 miles to the nearest little town ( and grocery store) so i recommend if you stay there, stop on your way out to the cottage and stock up on what you need. There is a gas station and convenient store about 2 or 3 miles away so you do have something nearby if you need anything. The cottage was well stocked so we did not need anything outside of food that was not there.

The cottage is peaceful and quaint and allowed us to totally relax and unwind from a busy week of vacation in San Fran and Napa and slow down and enjoy vacation. We loved coffee in the morning on the beautiful patio swing, the outside shower was wonderful after hiking in Yosemite and the stars at night are breath taking. We happened to get to see about 10 shooting stars in 15 minutes which does not happen in our city lights.

The drive to Yosemite is long but beautiful. It's 48 miles to the gates so if you are going to be making this drive daily for several days, you may want to take that into consideration for staying here. We only drove to the park for one full day so it was perfect for us.

I highly recommend driving into the park for sunrise over Glacier Point if you go. It was a 2 hour drive from the cottage to the peak of Glacier Point but worth every minute and more to watch the sunrise.

Gayle and Steve were gracious host and allowed us to walk their land and explore and visit with the animals. They made us feel right at home.

Wonderful little cottage to stay for those wanting to escape the busyness of life and totally relax ( but still have wifi and cell service too. )

Peaceful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cottage at Round Hat Ranch! After the crowds of people in Yosemite and on the road, the peace and quiet of the ranch was a welcome respite. The cottage is charming and has everything you could want. The animals are so friendly too. Our hosts were very welcoming and gave us excellent suggestions on what to see in Yosemite. Wish we had stayed a bit longer!

Best accommodation I have stayed in this year

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the ranch was a real pleasure. After the hustle and bustle of travelling around the west coast for a few weeks, it was great to arrive in such an oasis at the ranch. The attention to detail in the cottage is just superb, nothing has been left out. We met Stephen on arrival and he gave us a great orientation of the cottage as well a son providing some tips for Yosemite.

I travel a lot with work (and leisure) and this has to be my favourite accommodation this year. Why? It was the most relaxing, and it was the smaller things that made the difference. The personal touches. I could list them all, but just go and visit for yourself.

After a busy day in Yosemite there was nothing else better than coming back to the ranch, having a BBQ surrounded by a variety of ranch animals and wildlife.
