San Juan Waterhouse

Located on the sunny west side of San Juan Island, with stunning whale watching opportunities, this private, waterfront home offers superb vacation lodging.

Built uniquely close to the shoreline, the Waterhouse is a very secluded island home whose beautiful southwestern views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan De Fuca are breathtaking in all seasons. Situated on three acres with 1400 feet of rugged, pristine coastline, the home provides much sought after 'old island' privacy. Enjoy a front row view of the resident Orca whales, which hunt migrating salmon directly offshore and often sleep in the cove.

Custom built with much attention to creative details, enjoy a beautiful stone fireplace (gas flame just recently installed) when ambiance and warmth are the inspiration. The fully equipped kitchen includes a professional Viking stove, a great invitation to the serious chef. A stainless propane BBQ on the deck makes outdoor cooking a breeze.

Multiple French doors, a vaulted ceiling and an open living space floor plan surrounded by windows provide customized comfort, and spectacular water views from all rooms.

There is plenty to do with the rocky coves and a private gravel beach to explore. Tide pooling is excellent. Bring your binoculars because bird watching is superb, with resident Harlequin ducks and the local Bald Eagle 'Rocky'. Watch fox, otter, and deer close by, or pack your favorite beverages, a great book and relax on a sandy haven directly in front of the house. Two well furnished decks with outdoor seating, a picnic table and Adirondack chairs also beckon. Small beach fires are allowed if a fire ban is not enforced on the island. Best of all is whale watching as this stretch of shoreline has been identified by a Whale Museum biologist as a feeding area for Orcas. Watch whales pass by from the deck as their family groups come within a few yards of shore, hunting salmon.

What a view!

  • 5 of 5

This was our familyThanksgiving get together. Imagine cooking Thanksgiving dinner on a huge Viking range, with a gas fire in the fireplace when a pod of orcas swims by. Add a few Black Tailed deer, a couple of playful otters, a Bald Eagle or two, waves crashing on the rocks, the snow capped Olympics. The house was so warm and inviting, we really didn't want to leave.

Amazing Location

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Waterhouse for a week in November - and had a great time! The house is located very close to the water and is positioned to provide maximum privacy to its guests. Additionally, the house truly was designed to capitalize on the the view. It was great to just sit in front of a fire and relax while watching the wildlife (seals, bald eagles….and tons of deer) pass by just a few feet away. The owners were easy to deal with and the house was clean. We look forward to staying at the Waterhouse again in the not too distant future!

Indescribably beautiful

  • 5 of 5

The most serene setting you could ever imagine. The house is great and wonderfully comfortable and provides many panoramic views to enjoy, but unless its blowing a gale outside, why not spend every moment in the incredible grounds? I couldn't imagine a more serene place to stay on the island. I'd recommend buying your groceries before you arrive, because you won't want to leave. I could not give a higher rating. No way you'll be disappointed.

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 4 fantastic late October nights at the Waterhouse. We loved the privacy, views, as well as the the abundance of wildlife. We saw a fox that strolled right up to on the deck, bald eagles on the rocks at water's edge, and plenty of deer wandering through the yard. It was a little late in the year for lots of whale activity although we saw quite a few humbacks, orcas, porpoises, and dolphins on a whale watching tour later in the week. The house itself is extremely comfortable no matter the weather and the kitchen is well equipped. There is a gorgeous view from every window and it's hard to beat relaxing on one of the window seats while taking in the scenery. We especially loved late afternoons and evenings by the cove side fire pit! We hope to be back again soon!!!

We LOVED it!

  • 5 of 5

The five of us (ages 2 to 68) were in absolute heaven.

On day two of a visit a huge Orca whale almost joined us for coffee on the rocks directly behind the house. It was incredible. Five of the seven days we stayed here the Orcas (and a humpback) cruised back and forth behind the house making it really hard to care about going anywhere else or do anything but watch them.

When the Orcas did give us a break we walked up the driveway picking blackberries for a pie, visited nearby beaches (where a fox decided to crash our picnic), and went for runs on the trails....all of which was wonderful...but the best was getting back to our San Juan Island "home."

The house, the yard, and rocks behind the house were are favorite spots. Complete privacy with the perfect view.

I'm keeping this review short as others have said it all so well - but, I did want to say ....after seeing the island and other spots to stay .....we could not have been happier with our choice to stay here and were sad to leave,

Enjoy!

Caveat : obviously, depending on the time of year you go and luck....I can't promise you Orcas watching like we experienced

Relaxing family vacation with wonderful wildlife viewing

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying the week at the Waterhouse and watching the wildlife out of the many windows. We saw a bald eagle, deer, minke whales, orcas, sea lions, otters, and baby barn swallows just learning how to fly. Listening to the ocean crash against the shore was absolutely restorative, and cracking the windows meant that sound could fill the house. The weather was perfect and we sat outside enjoying the comfortable patio furniture and reading our books, just looking up when we heard the whales blow and could watch them swim by. It was just what we had hoped for when we booked a home so close to the water! The owner, Suzanne, was very responsive to questions, happy to share information about the island and the house even before we had booked with her. Then, once we had an opportunity to settle into the house, she called to see if there were any questions or anything she could do to make us more comfortable. It was so thoughtful of her, and was something we were grateful for! The kitchen was great and we cooked all of our meals at the house. The house was comfortable for 6 adults and we enjoyed playing games on the large dining room table while others watched TV. We loved that it was such an easy drive to Lime Kiln State Park to look for more Orcas and to South Beach to see red foxes. We also enjoyed going to the Saturday market in downtown Friday Harbor.

One of the highlights of our trip was an all-day sail with All Aboard Sailing. We saw lots of wildlife (including Orcas, bald eagles, minke whales, sea lions, seals, deer, otters, and porpoises) but what made it so memorable was the local knowledge that Captain Barb and Captain David, shared with us. In addition to discussing the different geography and local islands, they were able to tell us so much more about the marine life in the area. We loved learning about the specific whales we got to see, and traveling with two passionate conservationists, they were able to identify the whales and tell us all about them! It was really wonderful to spend the day with folks who clearly loved sailing and conservation, and we learned so much while having a phenomenal time. They also fixed us a wonderful dinner, that we enjoyed while listening to (with a hydrophone) and watching the Orcas at sunset! www.allaboardsailing
