Juniper House, completed in 2010, located in the Historic Newagen Colony on Southport Island. A four bedroom year round home with unique antique accents, sits just 65 feet from the crashing surf of the Atlantic Ocean. The one acre property offers privacy and panoramic ocean views, taking in Sequin Island lighthouse to the south, islands, and Sheepscot Bay to the west. This is a unique environment for those seeking a truly Maine Downeast experience.
The home offers an appealing open floor plan with expansive French door windows running along most of the first floor creating a light filled sunny space. A gourmet state-of-the-art kitchen with an island opens to dining and a cathedral ceiling living room with antique fireplace. A master bedroom suite with TV and a screened in porch is at the south end of the house with a book lined study, TV and an antique fireplace at the north.
The second floor includes four bedrooms, a full bath and laundry room. One bedroom has a queen sized bed and the other bedroom has two twin beds and a trundle. All three bedrooms have ocean views. The fourth room has a full bed.
Juniper Cottage is within walking distance of the Southport Library and the charming Southport Town Landing, where vegetables and baked goods are brought in weekly by a converted Long Island oyster boat. The Southport Store is a fun place to visit on the walk to Hendricks Head beach.
Guests at Juniper House may enjoy the amenities we share with the Newagen Seaside Inn. This includes a, saltwater seaside pool. Please check with Newagen Seaside Inn for details regarding the Pine Room. This room is available on Thursday's only, you will find a game room with billiards. Tennis courts are close by (see Newagen Seaside Inn to set a court time).
You can also enjoy a dock for swimming and our own beach(somewhat sandy and rocky but beautiful) and finally nature paths which cover the Association's property.
Our guests also often enjoy the fine dining, in a casual setting, offered at the Inn as well as beverages at the Pub.
During your stay you will surely enjoy visits to Boothbay Harbor only a 15 to 20 minute drive depending on the opening or closing of the swing bridge. A visit to the respected Maine Coastal Botanical Gardens, boat cruises, whale watching, deep sea fishing, art galleries, restaurants etc., are popular for many.
For the Golfers in the family, the Boothbay Golf Course (completely renovated in 2013) offers an 18 hole course with a full service club house to complete that perfect day.
Juniper Cottage is approximately three hours from Boston, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, one hour from Camden and just forty five minutes from Bath, Brunswick and Freeport.
After spending 3 lovely weeks at Juniper House, it's hard to imagine a more beautiful, relaxing, peaceful place to be. As you can see in the photos, the house is both gorgeous and comfortable, but it's the setting that is truly incredible. Between the changing moods of the ocean from placid to stormy and crashing, the birds, occasional seals and even dolphins, the sunsets, the Seguin Island lighthouse in the distance, the moon over the water, and the amazing stars at night, we really just wanted to sit on the back deck or on the beautiful lawn the whole time.
But we didn't, because there is so much to see and do in Southport and Boothbay for both kids and adults. We and our two-year-old son had a great time visiting the Aquarium, the Botanic Gardens (with an amazing children's garden), the Boothbay Railway Village, numerous nature trails, the farmer's market, and we looked forward to the Merrymeeting Farm vegetable boat every Wednesday. So neat! Plus, having the Newagen Seaside Inn next door was a real asset. Our son loved the candlepin bowling alley, and it's nice to be able to walk the grounds and have the option of swimming off their dock or in the pool.
Wendy, the caretaker, is a pleasure - sweet, and ready and willing to help with anything. She even brought us a pot of delicious seafood chowder!
After just a week home, we are missing the house and already planning a longer stay next summer. We really can't recommend it more strongly. A great, great vacation.
Just a short ride from Juniper enjoy a traditional lobster dinner on the outside deck at Robinson's Wharf. Visit the famous Boothbay Botanical Gardens just approx. 5 miles from the Southport bridge. If you are a golfer visit the newly renovated Boothbay Golf Course. Located in down town Boothbay Harbor you will find many activities from kayaking, whale watching, sailing, and so much more.
