Why Dr. Mary L. Cormier chose Castine
Built in 1973, original owner/builders from Cape Cod were all about details. House was positioned facing slightly South, to afford spectacular sunsets all across front windows, all year long. Cathedral ceilings and well insulated, orig. owners incorporated materials brought back from their world travels into the home. Cypress plank wall from Fl, brick hearth from Boston bldg.smokestack, copper lanterns driftwood memorabilia, paintings and carvings, etc. Present owners have included numerous photos and paintings to add to the decor, as well as telescopes and hi-power binocs to enhance the views. Builders of this house were all about details, as evidenced by facing the home slightly South to gain a view of the incredible sunsets all year long, across the front windows. Originally electric heated and well insulated, now has new System2000 oil hot-water baseboard throughout.
What makes this House unique
Peace and quiet with exceptional views across Wadsworth Cove and Penobscot Bay, Islesboro Island and Camden Hills in background. Flowering trees and shrubs, wild roses, geese , sea ducks, and deer families grazing on the lawns of a nearby estate. Unique public beach at end of road, safe swimming/boating/ beach-combing.

Lovely Home in Castine
This location of this home is fantastic. Although the approach down to the water is pretty steep, there is a very accessible beach within easy walking distance. The home was very clean and well-equipped and the owners provided more paper products and supplies than most rentals. We spent a lot of time on the sun porch just watching the water and the birds. There were 2 of us plus a dog for 4 nights, plus an extra 2 people for two nights, so we used all 4 bedrooms at some point. Our only negative comment would be that the mattresses in the basement rooms were in need of replacement. We could hear springs popping and they were not very comfortable. The queen beds in the loft bedroom were a little better. We enjoyed the whirlpool tub in the loft bathroom. The owners provided lots of towels, extra blankets and pillows. We were looking for peace and quiet and we found it. Apparently we hit the sweet spot between Maine Maritime graduation and the onset of tourists. Castine was very quiet, and while we wouldn't have minded a couple more restaurants and a shop or two, we were very happy with it as it was. The neighborhood was mostly quiet and very quiet at night. There were some dogs in the neighborhood that were not fenced which stopped us from walking our dog on the road. Never could catch the owners outside long enough to see if their dogs were okay with dogs walking by, so we kept our dog on leash in the yard. The cable TV and internet worked well. We did experience some spotty cell service (on Verizon). We enjoyed a hike in Witherle Woods to the top of Blockhouse Point. It was an easy hike with a beautiful view to reward our efforts. We visited the lighthouse and downtown Castine. Loved the food at the Castine Variety so much that we went twice. The crab and lobster were so fresh; the owner says she gets it right from the fishermen every morning. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, this is the place (at least this time of year!)
exceptional location and accomodations
A most wonderful time at Peregrine cottage. We drove to Ellsworth and Deer Isle, as well as to Bucksport and the observatory. Plenty of time to enjoy the sunsets and relax. The house is very comfortable and quiet, with a short distance to the center of Castine, and restaurants, as well as driving through the quaint little village. Thanks so much for providing a special week...Leo Martin-Joyce Martin-Donna and Paul McNamara
Leo, It was a pleasure having you at the Peregrine House. Hope to see you again. Mary Lou
Blueberry margaritas and lobster makes for a restful night in a lovely home
Taste and see that it is sweet.
Rain or shine, house was great!
We had a rainy few days, but we still enjoyed Castine and this house! We got one sunset and tried a little kayaking. We also hiked around nearby Witherle woods. The owners are clearly experts in hosting renters. They thought of every detail we might need and left clear instructions. Recommend this house for everyone!
Pleased to have guests enjoy Castine's history, the scenery, and many pleasantries.Would enjoy the guests in a repeat visit.
A wonderful return visit
We returned to Peregrine for a send time this year, and again immediately felt at home as soon as we walked through the door. The house is very comfortable, exceptionally well stocked, and the peace, views, and amazing sunsets are unforgettable! Mary Lou is an excellent host. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Quiet Waterfront Cottage with Amazing Views
My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at Peregrine. The place is updated and spotless and view is spectacular. Mary Lou was a gracious host, calling in advance and checking in while we were there to make sure we had everything we needed. The location is perfect -- tucked in on a quiet street just down the road from Wadsworth Cove beach. It's just a short 15-20 minute walk into the quaint little waterfront village of Castine, with beautiful historic homes and a lot of history. We enjoyed the Historical Museum walking tour on Saturday morning and a tour of the John Perkins House, complete with an authentic 1700s era cooking demonstration! We also enjoyed lobster rolls at The Wharf and lunch at MarKel's. We even steamed lobsters in the backyard (using sea water and seaweed) in the propane lobster steamer provided. This was a first, as we have only ever boiled them on the stove. Much time was spent exploring other coastal villages and hiking in Witherle Woods, Holbrook Island Sanctuary and on Isle au Haut. We look forward to returning to a return trip to Peregrine!
Jenner and her daughter were wonderful guests. They left the house exceptionally clean. They are very pleasant. They certainly can return at any time. I really sensed that they treated the house as their own.
They were a joy to have. Mary Lou Cormier
