Large extended family, children and grand-children. Born in Maine, schooled in Bangor to college level, now living in Bangor/Brewer area.

Dr. Mary L. Cormier purchased this house in 1978

Why Dr. Mary L. Cormier chose Acadia

Built in 1973, original owner/builders from Cape Cod were all about details. House was positioned facing slightly South, to afford spectacular sunsets all across front windows, all year long. Cathedral ceilings and well insulated, orig. owners incorporated materials brought back from their world travels into the home. Cypress plank wall from Fl, brick hearth from Boston bldg.smokestack, copper lanterns

driftwood memorabilia, paintings and carvings, etc.

Present owners have included numerous photos and paintings to add to the decor, as well as telescopes and hi-power binocs to enhance the views.

Builders of this house were all about details, as evidenced by facing the home slightly South to gain

a view of the incredible sunsets all year long, across the front windows. Originally electric heated and well insulated, now has new System2000 oil hot-water baseboard throughout.

What makes this house unique

Peace and quiet with exceptional views across Wadsworth Cove and Penobscot Bay, Islesboro Island and Camden Hills in background. Flowering trees and shrubs, wild roses, geese , sea ducks, and deer families grazing on the lawns of a nearby estate. Unique public beach at end of road, safe swimming/boating/ beach-combing.

Perfect Peregrine!

  • 5 of 5

Words just don't so this beautiful hide-away justice. Peregrine offered our family of four a lovely week of relaxation. Mary and Ray filled their retreat with all the necessities so we could focus just on ourselves. The home comes with everything: Towels, sheets, coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, bug spray, washer and dryer, shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, cotton balls, q-tips, spices, cereal, milk, cookware, kayaks, life jackets, games, puzzles, wi-fi, frisbee, jump ropes, hula-hoops, cards, bikes, magazines, books, maps, flashlights in every room and more.

The atmosphere at Peregrine feels so much like home and not a vacation rental. The views are spectacular and our two sons (12 & 14) thoroughly enjoyed walking the beach at low tide and kayaking at high tide. Sitting on the deck in the rocker watching the sunset was my favorite pastime. My husband enjoyed kayaking to Castine...a quaint little town!

Thank you for memories made...we will be back!

Owner's Response: It is always a pleasure to read how others enjoy the Peregrine House and Castine as Ray and I did for 15 years. We can identify with everything you write about. We try to make improvements every year. It is wonderful to appreciate the history of Castine. I recommend that history buffs and others read THE FORT by Cornwell before their arrival or during their stay to further appreciate the historical town. After visitors have absorbed Castine, they can go north to Acadia National Park for different treats and South to Camden for another quaint town and more sailboats. Come and enjoy a vacation of a lifetime.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This home was just wonderful, and I mean a HOME. Mary Lou the owner had everything at her home to make you comfortable, she even left fresh milk and eggs in the frig. It was beautiful and clean. The sunsets were beautiful from her deck. Loved the sun room for morning coffee, which was also provided by Mary Lou. Went to Bar Harbor and Acadia, was an hour and 15mins. away. Went to a lot of harbor towns. If you go to Bar Harbor, you must go to the Lobster boat tour. Mary Lou even has a fire pit, we did that one night, but beware of the bugs. Mary Lou also has bug spray. One of the best homes I have rented from VRBO.

Attention to detail in every way.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 adults and a 2 1/2 year thoroughly enjoyed our time here. It lacks for nothing, including a small amount of breakfast foods for our first morning. Some of the highlights.....sunsets on the porch, roasting marshmallows over the firepit, kayaking, walking the short walk to the beach, and walking into town for lunch. Mary Lou, the owner, could not have been more accommodating and she got back to me very quickly answering my questions. I would highly recommend this home.

Peregrine House - Beautiful rental on Penobscot Bay

  • 5 of 5

Best vacation ever. The view of the bay was perfect. Enjoyed watching the tides move in and out, and loved the seals sunbathing on the rocks. Family had a wonderful time kayaking and playing the games provided by the owners. This house has it all. Kitchen had everything needed for cooking , and also a grill for outside. We sat outside on the deck most of the time, there is an outside porch area and a porch area that is covered and enclosed for when it was cooler outside. Located in a quite neighborhood, and just the most beautiful location. We are from Texas and went north to get some cooler weather. The breeze off the bay was wonderful. Highly recommend this home.

Amenities, location, and waterfront view couldn't be better!

  • 5 of 5

Peregrine Cottage was totally satisfying in every way. The house is comfortably and attractively furnished with everything we could have possibly needed, and there's a water view from every room on the three floors. Additionally, the ground floor patio, fire pit and yard seating, deck, and lovely sunroom allow guests to take full advantage of the beautiful view. and the sunsets are incredible!

We stopped for a few rolls of toilet paper on the way from the airport, just to get us by before we could shop the next day for other basic supplies--salt and pepper, paper towels, plastic wrap, soap, etc. We needn't have worried---the kitchen, pantry, bathrooms, and laundry room were well stocked to meet all our needs. Of course we supplied our own food, but the cupboard had salt and pepper, herbs and spices, and other items we were invited to use, as well as cereal and milk as an emergency stopgap before shopping. While a small and pricy market is in nearby Castine, a full supermarket is thirty minutes away, encouraging careful planning ahead.

The location is ideal for short day trips to neighboring villages, islands, and Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. Lots of really pretty countryside scenery--well-kept farms and residences, small towns, wooded areas, and water in one form or another everywhere. We visited Fort Hood, the Blue HIll County Fair, and other varied attractions, but the town of Castine turned out to be our favorite town; it's really pretty with lots of historical sites to explore.

Just one note in case it matters: bedrooms are on ground and third floor, meaning it's necessary to use stairs either up or down. (Living and dining areas and kitchen are on first floor, between the two floors with bedrooms.) This wasn't an issue for us, but could be to some. There's a full bath on each of three floors. We were two couples, and each couple had a bedroom with a full bath (and more beds than the four of us needed).

We have only praise for Peregrine Cottage and its most hospitable and gracious owner, who wanted to verify that we had everything we needed. Our stay was just great, and we appreciate Mary Lou's sharing her family's lovely waterfront cottage!
