About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom Rental Home On The Edge Of The Wilderness.

Stay inside the gates of Yosemite National Park without the hassles associated with the accommodations offered in Yosemite Valley. You will not have to battle traffic or fight for parking in Yosemite West, nor will you be choking on campfire smoke. Yosemite West is extremely peaceful and quiet even during the big holiday weekends. You can save lots of money by preparing your own meals in the spacious and fully equipped kitchen while enjoying the sunset on the edge of the wilderness. Note this is a duplex and the owner/groundskeeper lives in the separated (100% firewall) unit below and to the right. Also don't worry about noise, the owners unit is quite soundproofed.

About Bill Russell

After growing up in Wisconsin I finally moved in 1980 to Yosemite to climb the rocks and mountains. In the winter I enjoy skiing the winter snows and when the snow melts into river water I use the same water for kayaking, rafting and fly fishing. I have worked as a rock climbing guide and instructor at the Yosemite Mountaineering School since 1993 and I'm very familiar with all the scenic and recreational opportunities available in and around Yosemite 12 months a year.

Bill Russell purchased this house in 2012

Why Bill Russell chose Yosemite Area

7164 Yosemite Park Way is at the end of the road and in a less built-up part of Yosemite West. This insures less noise and traffic.

Excellent Condo, Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5

The condo was the perfect size for our family of four, two of those are teenage boys. Easily could have slept more. Stair climbing/descending required. The condo was clean with all the amenities of home, minus the wifi/tv, but there are plenty of movies and we never heard any complaints. Paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, dishwasher soap are plentiful. We shopped for groceries in Mariposa at Pioneer Market so that we could pack lunches and cook dinner at the condo. The condo's proximity to Yosemite Valley (YV) could not be beat. There is no AC and during this time of year, the condo warms up during the day but cools off in the evening/night when we were returning from YV. After sky darkens, feels like you could touch the stars from the balcony. Overall, a great place to stay!

Clean and comfortable home!

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy with our stay at this property. The home was clean and in great condition. It was off the main road about 7 minutes drive but was much closer than if you stayed off the park property. It was centrally located, right near road that leads to Glacier Point and about 30 minutes from the valley. There is a lot of driving on windy mountain roads in Yosemite! There were 2 bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs. Stairs are steep if you have anyone with mobility issues in your group. It was not a problem for us and there is also a bedroom upstairs and bathroom too. It was great to have the washer and dryer and house was stocked with laundry supplies. It would have been nice to have a few more staples in the kitchen such as coffee, tea, Saran Wrap and foil and a drink pitcher - especially since there are no stores close by at all! There are a lot of DVD's to watch since there is no cable which didn't bother us. Would be nice if few family games were kept there too. No wifi as far as we could tell and our phones had no service on property either. Not too much of a problem except when we needed directions. We were okay with this but others might not be. Nice to have the gas grill on the deck! Very nice and peaceful out so far!

Wonderful open airy home with great views!

  • 4 of 5

Very roomy and comfortable home with wonderful new appliances and generous sized bedrooms. Also an amazing view. The only downsides were no wifi or cell service and perhaps some fixings beyond just salt and pepper would be helpful, especially since the closest shopping is a steep drive down the mountain.

Great place to stay when visiting Yosemite; close proximity to Glacier Point, Wawona and the Valley.

  • 4 of 5

Six of us (3 couples) stayed at Bill's place for a week in June 2017. His home near the end of the road in Yosemite West was well appointed, equipped (towels, linens, kitchen appliances, gas grill, crock pot, etc) and stocked (TP, paper towels) for the week. The home has adequate seating in both the dining and living areas for six people.

Bill, who lives below, was very accommodating and helpful in providing guidance and tips on things to visit in the area, where to park in the Valley and just generally a nice guy. Yosemite West in general is a great place to stay when visiting Yosemite, due to its central location between Glacier Pt, the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove. (Unfortunately, the Mariposa Grove was not open due to the park being behind schedule in their restoration project. We knew this when we booked).

The two bedrooms downstairs were ideal for the two younger couples, and the one on the main level was great for us seniors that did not want to trek up and down the stairs. The baths on both levels suited us well. Plenty of towels and linens, and the washer/dryer was a plus. Having towels and cleaning supplies taking up most of the space in the pantry put a crimp on dry food storage space, but we made due.

We had quite the variety in weather during the week, with 4" of snow on the second night, with daily highs in the 40s. The snow was gone within a day, and by the end of the week, the Valley was close to 90. The weather and clouds afforded ideal photo ops at Glacier Pt and at Tunnel View. At the beginning of the week, we had the heater on. At the end of the week, with the unseasonably warm weather, the home became a little warm during the day. However, opening the windows and the turning on the ceiling fan in the living area made the heat tolerable. The lower level bedrooms were always nice and cool.

We could not give the stay a 5-star rating due to: (1) the rather plain decor (however it is very functional), and (2) the home's location, which was at the very end of the road in Yosemite West, nearly a 10 minute drive back out to Rt 41; (3) the lack of dry food storage space; and (4) the limited trash/recycling space on the rear deck (we had to take several bags into the park to dispose of them - admittedly, we had 6 people and seemed to create a lot of trash) . However, for the price, we were very happy with our stay. Many aspects of the place exceeded our expectations. If we could, we would give it 4.5 stars.
