About Roger and Myra Dutton

I am an author, poet, and columnist. My husband is a musician, songwriter, and contemporary artist, who has been featured in several art shows throughout the Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palm Springs, and San Diego areas.

Roger and Myra Dutton purchased this estate in 1992

Why Roger and Myra Dutton chose Idyllwild

This is an ancestral home on my husband's side of the family. My husband was raised in Idyllwild and knows much of the history of the town, firsthand. We raised three wonderful children in the Idyllwild Manor. Four generations of this family have lived here now. I came to Idyllwild because of the amazing natural beauty found in these mountains and was fortunate to find a wonderful husband and a place to live and raise a family.

What makes this estate unique

This estate is really one of the most wonderful homes in Idyllwild. It has been owned by only three families; all were very successful and influential in this town. Two of them virtually owned Idyllwild at the time. The quality and craftsmanship of this home is immediately apparent, as is the warmth and good energy that fills every room. There is so much here. I have taught little children to swim in the swimming pool for years. The garden is filled with butterflies in the summer and fall, and with flowers most of the year. The stream offers up natural wildlife from time to time: Great Blue Herons, trout, Kingfishers, hawks, deer, raccoons, etc. My little grandson points to the stream and says, 'Wow!', because he has seen these creatures here. It is magical and a wonderful place to bring children, or just to bring the child in you. There is so much land, so much home, and so much love.

Idyllwild afficionados, please inquire about the history of this place. This is not a cabin in the woods but an elegant home. Some of our guests have called it "a little castle in the woods". The house has a craftsman art vibe and is very eclectic and charming. On the other side of the creek, there is a special pavilion where you can sit and be enchanted by the sounds of nature and the seasonal stream.

We enjoyed our three nights in Myra and Roger's home. There were 6 of us so plenty of bedrooms. Comfortable beds. Functional kitchen and cute bathrooms (showers were tiny but part of the ambiance). The grounds were cared for by true plant person so fun to walk around.

The weather during our stay was very cool - but we were close enough to walk to town and around without getting cold.

Perfect mountain paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our large group spent an amazing weekend at this beautiful home in Idyllwild. We were lucky enough to watch the snow fall out of one of the large picture windows and just marveled at the beauty surrounding the house. For us, the best thing about this property is the separation of living areas from sleeping areas; we had kids with us who went to bed early and didn't hear a peep when we were in the living room playing the piano until the wee hours! We were all comfortable and had plenty of room to spread out and relax, and the close proximity to town and hikes allowed us all to explore the area with this house as our home base. The hot tub and fireplace were perfect touches for our winter wonderland getaway! My friends and I would absolutely return to this home again. We would love to come back in the summer and take advantage of the pool and outdoor space! Our hosts were incredibly responsive, gracious, and welcoming- thank you Roger and Myra!

This is our second time staying Idyllwild Manor in the last 2 years and it was great!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying Idyllwild Manor in the last 2 years and it was just as wonderful the second time. We stayed in the in March and were treated by a light snow the last night - which was beautiful. Our days were spent walking into town and around the community and our evenings playing board games around the kitchen table and hanging out in the living room around the fireplace. All in all, a great weekend! We will be back a third time.

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I came here for a weekend with a group of friends for a birthday getaway. The house is absolutely beautiful, super clean, well-styled, and full of character. Every nook and cranny has a cool book or an interesting painting, and me and my friends absolutely loved just spending time in the house during a rainy weekend. It's a 5 minute walk right into town and Strawberry creek in the backyard is so precious! Roger and Myra were lovely and made the whole process easy. I can't recommend this place enough!!!

Fun time had by all!

  • 4 of 5

This was a girls weekend getaway and it was fabulous. The home is so spacious and the bedrooms are very large. We had a gal come to give massages to everyone so that added to the overall relaxation for the weekend. Roger very promptly solved any minor issues that we had and Myra left us a delicious treat. My only tiny issue was how cold the kitchen always was and that's where the large dining table is so we were in there a lot for meals and playing games. The home is very close to town but you still have the feeling of being in the woods. Overall, a very successful and fun weekend!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. We loved having you stay here. I am sorry that the kitchen was cold for you. If the heating vent on the floor had been opened wider, you would have been quite warm. Somehow it must have been closed down or this wouldn't have happened. I wish we had known. We could have eliminated that problem for you. Best wishes! Hope you return.

Idyllic Idyllwild Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The hosts:

A large group of us from San Diego stayed at Myra and Roger’s cabin last weekend. They are wonderful hosts and even left us some homemade treats to enjoy over the weekend! They were extremely responsive to any questions we had, and were very easy to work with.

The home:

The cabin is clean, inviting, warm and quiet, close to town and has a ton of parking. The beautiful yard is fully fenced in and very welcoming and relaxing. There were enough rooms, beds and bathrooms for our group of 11 adults and one baby. There was plenty of space to gather to watch the Olympics, cook meals, or find a quiet corner to read in.

The town:

The cabin is situated a convenient .2 miles from town and just minutes (on foot) to restaurants and shops. Idyllwild is an adorable mountain town that looks like it hasn’t changed since the 1960s. The hikes are challenging, the vistas are beautiful, and the air is clean and fresh. It’s a quick 2.5 hour trip from San Diego. Our group had a wonderful time and we will be back!

Idyllwild is the gem of southern California. Located in the mountains above Palm Springs, the San Jacinto National Forest is one of the most majestic sites to be found anywhere. With tall mountains, giant landmarks, and a forest of oaks, pines, and cedars, our hiking trails and majestic overlooks will amaze you. My personal favorites are Deer Springs Trail, Devil's Slide Trail, and Southridge Trail. These will take you to mountaintops and nature spots that you will never forget. Mountain biking and rock climbing are popular pastimes. You can go fishing or boating at Lake Hemet, thirteen minutes away. Fish are stocked every two weeks, and there are boat rentals and a water park. Birders love the many migratory birds that pass over our mountains. We have Golden Eagles that live year-round at Lake Hemet. Idyllwild has yoga, pilates, dance, and exercise classes, massage therapists, and an acupuncture clinic. This is a place to decompress and rejuvenate. Musical entertainment is offered at Cafe Aroma, Ferro's, and IdyllAwhile Wine Bar. Idyllwild Arts, a private, boarding, international high school for music and the arts, offers free music, dance, and theatre performances, as well as, art shows. Check out the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program for classes available to the public! They are incredible! Plays are offered by our various theatre groups. The Idyllwild Art Alliance has major art shows throughout the year. Many professional musicians live here, away from the rush of big cities, and perform at our local bistros. The Idyllwild Jazz Festival happens in August every year and draws huge crowds. The Nature Center and the Idyllwild Community Playground are wonderful for children. We also have a new public library and a movie theater. Sky Island Natural Foods and Meadow Greens Cafe is only a block away. They have a Farmer's Market with local organic produce every Saturday.
