Perfect Vacation Getaway in Scenic Durango Hills

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 2,600 sq ft
Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

A unique and cozy home perfect for vacations, retreats, and sabbaticals.

Escape to the tranquility of this gorgeous 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath modern Colorado retreat. You will enjoy spectacular views for miles in every direction and from every room in the house or while sitting outside on one of three outdoor decks.

The Space

High in the Durango Hills neighborhood adjacent to the San Juan National Forest, you will immersed in the surrounding forestland yet be just a short drive to Durango.

This 2,600 sq. ft. home will sleep about 8 adults with no kids OR up to 6 adults and 4-6 kids. The house has one bedroom on each floor, plus a fold-out sofa bed in the living room, a sectional day bed in the movie room (a great sleeping area for an older kid), a crib, and an air mattress. - Pak-n-play crib with changing table that can be moved into any room. - A high chair and booster chair for meals. -Some toys, books, and puzzles (best for ages 5 and under).

We have several kid-friendly amenities including: a) small kids "project table" with 2 benches for drawing or doing puzzles, b) two kids' sleds, an enclosed "kinder shuttle" sled with adult harness, and one pair of kids' snowshoes, c) a treehouse with zipline, d) movie room with video projector and giant pull down screen, and d) a large hammock on the front porch for inducing naps!

The house stays cool in the the summer (due to gentle mountain breezes) and warm in the winter (due to three gas-burning stoves, 1 wood burning stove, and a 2-story solarium 'wall of windows').

Guest Access

Guests to this retreat will have full access to the entire house and 3 acre property (including forested area and meadow), basketball hoop and paved play area, kid's tree house with zipline, and walking access to nearby U.S. Forest Service hiking and biking trails.

Getting around

This house is perfect for enjoying all that Durango area has to offer: spend an afternoon or evening in downtown Durango (15-minute drive), or day trips to Lake Vallecito or Durango Mountain Resort (both a 45 minute drive).

NOTE: The house is a 30-minute drive from the airport. The last 3 miles are on a gravel road with several turns and grade changes. Any car or truck can navigate the road during the non-winter months. But all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is ESSENTIAL in the winter months, and snow tires are HIGHLY recommended.

Great place to “get away from it all”

  • 4 of 5

Our family (consisting of 2 parents, 3 kids, ages 13-21 and 2 dogs) loved our stay here. The size was perfect but there’s definitely room for more, the location was secluded but also a short drive to town.

-The design and decor of the house is so cool; notice the railings on the main floor being made of old glass/business front doors.

- The house is clean, I felt very comfortable making ourselves at home right away.

- Spacious; there is room for everyone.

- Secluded enough that dogs can roam a bit and be dogs. We were lucky that our dogs didn’t roam too far or get into trouble, we put glow sticks around their necks when they had to go out at night.

- Kitchen is well equipped with what you need to make meals and have morning coffee but bring your own ingredients/spices/sugar/food.

- The heater in the master bath is awesome, makes it more comfortable getting out of the shower.

- The tree house is very cute and zip line is fun (even for adults).

- Jeremy is a very responsive and amenable host.

- It could be a pain, going back up and down the bumpy hill if you plan to go into town often.

- Spotty internet and WiFi, which could be a problem if you have work to do or want to watch a movie on the projector or your own laptop. We got around that by using one of our phones as a hotspot.

- We had an issue with low water pressure, or water not being available at all at various times. I’m not sure if that’s just how it is with wells but Jeremy was made aware and looked into it to make sure there wasn’t a larger problem for the next guests. We just made sure to take quick showers and not leave the water running while washing dishes and not to use water from different faucets/toilets concurrently.

Word of caution: apparently GPS may take you on an “off roading” route to get to the house; my 16 and 21 year old had quite an adventure coming up the wrong way and one of them had to get out to “move boulders” and almost “tipped the car”. Looking at the house, they came from the left, we came from the right and never went that way, so I have no idea what they did. 😂

Owner's Response: Thanks Stacey for the kind words about our Durango house. Glad everyone had a good time. Your family were great guests and I hope you'll come back again. If you do, we can offer you a free night's stay as a small gesture for the issues you experienced during your visit. I'm happy to report that the Spring road work was done right after you stayed with us, but the gravel mountain road was probably at it's "bumpiest" during your visit! Sorry we didn't realize you had spotty wi-fi, but sounds like your cell phone hotspot was a decent workaround. The wi-fi is pretty reliable, but when it does act up occasionally just re-starting the modem fixes the issue 99% of the time. And we also really appreciate your flexibility on the unexpected low water pressure. We've never had an issue with water before when we were full-time residents, and the caretaker or other vacation renters have never reported this as an issue. It turns out that the problem was because our well pump had burned out. Once we had the well pump replaced, the water pressure returned to normal. But given the severe drought in the Mountain West this year, we encourage all guests to conserve water as much as possible!

Great house for families outside on Durango

  • 4 of 5

This house is great for families. We have a five, three, and one year old. There's a very kid friendly loft, tree house, zip line, theater style projector, and plenty to do in and out of the house.

The Durango area is very fun as well. We explored and recommend (for younger kids) Mesa Verde, the Powerhouse Science Center, Fish Hatchery (you can feed the fish), Hiking in the San Juan national Forest, and waking main Street. There's much more to do.

We only had a few issues with the house. The house gets very hot upstairs before it cools off at night, and even with fans running it was hard for the kids to fall asleep in the loft. Also due to the current drought the wasn't much water in the well. The owner did a great job of supplying bottled and jugged water for drinking and cooking to help with that.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the positive review Noah. Your family were great guests and I hope you'll come back again. If you do, we can offer you a free night's stay as a small gesture for the issues you experienced. On the loft being warmer than the rest of the house, my apologies, I didn't know this was issue for you during your stay. The ceiling fan direction is reversible using a button on the remote. It was probably still set to the "winter direction". In warmer weather, the ceiling fan can be reversed to the "summer direction" so that it pulls the air out of the loft bedroom with the windows open. We also appreciate your flexibility on the unexpected water issue. We never had an issue with water before as residents or reported by the caretaker or other vacation renters. The water pressure has returned to normal after replacement of the well pump and recharging of the well. But given the severe drought in Southwest Colorado this Spring, we are still encouraging water conservation.

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family of three adults and three kids had a wonderful time in the Durango Hills. The cabin is very spacious and nestled in the woods. The kids saw Wild turkeys and a Marmot from the deck. We had fun mountain biking on the bike trails right off the property and skiing at Purgatory Resort. The movie room with the big screen was a hit with the whole family. The owner was very helpful with any questions we had. We recommend this property to anyone who loves the outdoors!

Absolutely awesome

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have enjoyed our time any more than we did. House is nestled in the hills and was an absolute winter wonderland! Got to sled and snowshoe around the neighborhood. House easily accommodated 4 adults and 2 kids. If in winter definitely need snow driving ability, snow tires, chains, etc. Street goes straight uphill. Host is fantastic and made sure to check in with us and had great local suggestions on resources. Already trying to plan a trip back.

A Gem!

From the moment our family arrived at Jeremy's lovely cabin, we felt home. The house is well appointed with gorgeous views in every direction. Jeremy was available and responsive to any questions we had. The movie projector was great for the kiddos! We would recommend this home to anyone looking for a great place to stay in Durango.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house is great! It's got great light, beautiful location and all the amenities you could want. Jeremy was easy to contact... the keys box was easy to use.... the only warning is that the road leading to the house is a bit rough... glad we had A4M x 4... overall we loved it
