About Carl Lancaster

Since first visiting Hawaii over 30 years ago, I had a dream of owning property on one of the islands, and this house represents the culmination of that dream. We are excited at the opportunity to share this wonderful place with others. I live in Friendswood, Texas, married with 2 sons and a daughter.

Carl Lancaster purchased this house in 2013

Why Carl Lancaster chose Hilo District

There's no doubt that the private waterfall on acreage is what appealed to us when shopping for Hawaiian properties. The seclusion at the end of the road is an added bonus, and who can deny the refreshing cool trade winds at around 1500 ft altitude! Of course, the pièce de résistance is the unbelievable view from the wraparound lanai.

What makes this house unique

Unlike most lots where a waterfall comprises part of the property boundary, this one is contained entirely on our property. Thus, no unexpected drop-ins by the neighbors! As a matter of fact, you'll probably not see another person once on the property. Water is by catchment and triple-filtered out of the sink/showers, or quadruple-filtered out of the fridge! On-demand systems means you never run out of hot water! Electricity consumed on the grid is balanced by solar panels, so we're almost completely green!

Notes:
This property is located at approx. 1500 ft. elevation, so it's always nice and cool. Most houses in Hawaii don't have air conditioning, and we found it to be a bit too warm indoors at the lower elevations, especially around midday.

Beautiful House, private and secluded property, close to beaches

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house for four days. It was a very lovely home. We felt very comfortable in the house, it felt like our own place. The caretaker Starr was very helpful and considerate. She met us late at night to take us to the property, for which we were very grateful as we would have had a hard time finding it otherwise. She was also very helpful as she purchased some groceries for us so that we Had some supplies for when we arrived. Carl is a very helpful owner and he answered any questions that we had.

The house was very well stocked, and had a homey feel to it. The waterfall on the property was tricky to get to, but my 75 year old mom was able to get to it. (Although we didn't go right down into the water). The location of the house was very handy, it was just a short drive to Hilo. It was a very nice place to come home to after a great day of beaches (and sea turtles) or volcanos and lava.

I would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to go to Hawaii. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the big island and I would happily stay here again if I get he chance to visit he big Island again.

Best decision of our trip!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this property based on nothing more than the positive reviews and the peaceful vibes we got from looking at the pictures. In other words, we did very little research and just went with our gut feeling.

We were overjoyed to pull up to the property and have all our hopes confirmed and expectations exceeded. This was my family's first trip to Hawaii and we were hoping for a relaxing authentic experience. We narrowed in on the big island for it's reputation of being less crowded, yet lush with diverse experiences. We were a bit nervous about the rain in Hilo since it is the wet side of the island, but, as luck would have it, we had beautiful weather for our entire stay. One evening it was so clear that we saw a billion stars from the driveway.

The house on the Akaka Falls property sits nestled on a hillside with expansive views of the water. The foliage is lush around the property giving you a tucked away feel. We notified the property manager upon our arrival and she met us in nearby Honomu to usher us to the property and orient us to the house.

The house is very well kept with everything you need to make it your home away from home. We were a family of four (3 adults and 1 child), so we enjoyed having meals and playing games in the common area, but also the freedom to retreat to our individual bedrooms for quiet time.

We spent a ton of time sitting out on the porch every morning, sipping on coffee and watching the sunrise. We were pleasantly surprised to find a few boogie boards and some snorkeling equipment (including fins) to enjoy on a day trip to the beach.

My family was unanimously impressed with the house/property. We each included it in our top 3 things we loved about our Hawaii vacation. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat! Mahalo!

Owner's Response: Receiving a review like this is what makes it all worth while for us to own vacation rentals. We are so very thankful to Emily for her heartfelt words, and also to her family for appreciating and respecting our beloved home on the Big Island. Needless to say, we are overjoyed that they all had a great time, and we hope they'll come back and see us one day!

Jewel in a Tropical Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful home 10 nights over Christmas, new Years and our 40th anniversary. Our party of 6 was completed by our two adult sons and one's wife and the other's fiance. The downstairs was perfect for the 2 young couples. My husband and I were perfectly comfortable in the queen size bed upstairs, and enjoyed access to the living area in the early mornings. We arrived in time to do grocery shopping on Christmas Eve. The Hilo Farmer's Market was great and the little Poke Shop - Ou Thai Food - was a great place to grab a delicious lunch. A little research found Grapes - A Wine Store in Hilo, with an excellent selection of affordable still and sparkling wines for our celebrations! Our family has several good cooks, who enjoyed the gourmet kitchen. We expected a dining table for 6, but managed just fine with use of the dining bar. The table became home for our traditional holiday jigsaw puzzle. We knew we were in a rain forest, but still were shocked it rained ALL DAY on Christmas. No worries, we stayed in to feast and exchange gifts. The weather cooperated thereafter, so we enjoyed all our planned activities, and there were many! Don't miss snorkeling at the Hapuna Tide Pools! The 2 best restaurants were in the little town of Pahoa (near the tide pools) Kaleo's Bar & Grill and Nings Thai Cuisine. Carl's house is a jewel in a tropical paradise. There is so much to do nearby. However, we traveled the entire island from Kiholo Bay to the South Point, from beaches to the volcano to the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset and star gazing on our anniversary. It was a wonderful vacation made more special having this lovely home to come home to each night.

Incredible Rainforest Sanctuary experience

  • 5 of 5

Just 1 week ago today (11/5) I had the blessing of waking up in the morning (after late evening trans-oceanic flight arrival to the Big Island from Idaho) to the most incredible gift to all the senses (eyes, smell and sound). I truly felt humble tears of joy because of the beauty of this place, it was a piece of heaven on earth! This was my first trip to the Big Island and a special Mother/Daughter vacation. I cannot find all the words to describe the beauty and peace of staying in this Akaka Falls property, you have to be there to know! Thank you Carl and Jeannie for sharing your incredibly special home in this incredibly beautiful place, we will never forget. IF you are looking to truly get away from the crowds and experience staying in a private area, in a gorgeous, immaculately clean home surrounded by breathtaking views and sounds of nature unique to this area on the Big Island, then this is the PERFECT place to stay. This home is lovingly cared for and has the natural feel of Hawai'i. My daughter and I kept saying this was our "Rainforest Sanctuary" experience! I was also VERY impressed and must mention another special aspect to staying here - the wonderful and kind help from "Starr" who graciously made herself available to talk with me on the phone, meet up with me and help with directions to this property. Since my daughter and I had evening flight arrival, I surely appreciated Starr taking the time to help us find our way at night! Thank you again Starr for everything, the customer service for our stay here was the BEST in every way! Thank you again Carl and Jeannie, I surely hope to return again someday. --Julie

The way to go if you want quality and privacy, but not be too far from any Big Island adventure.

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of four that includes two 16 year-old boys. The house was perfect for us. Sitting under the eaves on the lanai was by far my favorite spot, rain or shine. The view was enticing and the sounds of rainforest were enchanting. I even got used to the frogs. On the nights the skies were clear, my husband set up his camera to photograph the stars. So many stars!

You could tell this house was quality; built to last and well loved. It was clean and well maintained, having none of the usual plumbing problems we usually run into. The kitchen was well equipped and comfortable to cook in. We had several meals at the house. My teenage boys loved the fact that they had their own bedroom. And we liked our privacy.

We did not rent a four-wheel drive, but had no problem making it up the drive-way. Thank you, Star, for meeting us and showing us the way. And thank you, Jeannie and Carl, for sharing your home.
