About Kay Irvin

We live in Morganton, NC and are both retired. We love to travel, and appreciate most when we are able to stay in a place that has a story, and that has a warmth about it that you just can’t find in a hotel. So, we have finally decided to share our cabin with others and hope that everyone will enjoy it as much as we do.

Kay Irvin purchased this cabin in 1985

Why Kay Irvin chose Newland

We purchased the property for this home in 1985 and years later, when our two children were in their pre-teen years, we decided that we should have a family bonding project of building a mountain cabin. What began as a family project has turned into our family haven. We enjoy the opportunity to retreat to this special place, where we relish in being on 'Cabin Time,' a time we can all just sit back and cherish the beauty of the mountains and the company of loved ones.

What makes this cabin unique

This area is to us, the perfect spot. We are all outdoor enthusiasts and this location provides wonderful opportunities for adventures throughout every season of the year; hiking, swimming, skiing, universities, golfing, local southern culture, mountain wineries, biking, rock climbing and being just minutes away from Pisgah National Forest. After playing outside all day, there is nothing quite like coming back to the cabin and enjoying a cup of coffee or glass of wine on the deck, taking in the beautiful scenery.

Perfect house for weekend in the NC mountains

  • 5 of 5

We visited for our son’s 7th birthday weekend and took advantage of this house that seems close to everything but all alone in the mountains at the same time. We visited Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mountain, and Sugar Creek Gem Mining (Banner Elk), and hiked the Upper and Lower Creek Falls trails (5 minute drive) and never traveled more than 25 minutes. The house is a very well maintained log cabin with everything we needed for our family of 4. The grounds surrounding the house are well landscaped and maintained. We made use of the outdoor fire pit and grill and enjoyed a night under the stars. The log cabin is well stocked and nicely decorated. We would definitely recommend this house to others and consider returning again for future trips to the mountains.

Great getaway weekend

  • 5 of 5

Peaceful secluded location with access to lots of outdoor fun. Well stocked kitchen made it easy to “stay in” for dinner and then drift out to the fire pit for s’mores. We would come back!

Quiet and away from it all cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the cabin. The cabin had everything and more. Even though it’s secluded, it doesn’t take but 20-30 min to make it to great restaurants and grocery stores. We explored the trails around Gingercake mountain, such as Jonas Ridge, Hawksbill, Table Rock and The Chimneys. Definitely can recommend this gem. Had a great time.

Wonderful setting, well furnished

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful rental this turned out to be. The location was great, close to attractions but very private and quiet. The property is tastefully landscaped to blend into the mountain surroundings. The deck furniture is substantial and designed to allow full enjoyment of the outdoor setting. Perfect for sitting with a cup of coffee or glass of wine to enjoy the serenity of the area.

The interior is wonderfully eclectic. The choice of furnishings is comfortable and of remarkable quality for a rental.

As far as what you might need to help you enjoy your stay, it is all there. The appliances, the cookware, the electronics, and even down to quality flatware, I cannot say enough positive about our stay there. I certainly hope to return in the future.

Many thanks to the owner for sharing this wonderful place with us.

Peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

While in the area for a sporting event, we searched for a place for our family to stay and were most pleased with our selection!!! The cabin was perfectly appointed with all the basic necessities and more! Very clean, cozy bedding, extremely well maintained and the setting was beyond gorgeous! We had plenty of room for the 6 of us and just loved the gas fireplace logs:) Our kids had fun exploring the grounds and the nearby town of Morganton had plenty of shops, restaurants, groceries etc. We only wish we could’ve had more time and been able to enjoy more local hikes and sites! We thoroughly recommend the location!
