About Jim Rice
I am originally from North Carolina and Diana is from New York and we met and married in South Florida. Its the classic tale of country boy meets city girl and the rest is history. We have 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren who we love spending time with. We enjoy nature and the great outdoors which is the main reason that we purchased Doublehead Mountain Retreat and the more than 100 acres of wild mountain land around it.
Jim Rice purchased this Cabin in 2004
Why Jim Rice chose Plumtree
While growing up in a small North Carolina town as a child we took frequent trips to the NC mountains to enjoy the cool mountain air as well as the endless activities including fishing, hiking, caving and tubing -rafting down the numerous area rivers. When I first saw this property and Its seclusion I knew that this would be the place that our family would enjoy and make many memories. We are within walking distance to several caves, waterfalls and stocked trout streams as well as being able to enjoy our own 2 acre pond right in front of our cabin. Our cabin is also a short drive to many of the High Country attractions including Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell( Highest Elevation east of the Mississippi River), Beech and Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts and many white water rafting and ziplining excursions.
What makes this Cabin unique
The reason I love this place is the seclusion and remoteness of this property. Although there are a few other cabins in the area you cant see any from our cabin. We are not in a development not subject to any rules and regulations.

Awesome hiking get-away vacation for me and my pup!
Got everything I was hoping for!!
Comfortable cabin, solitude, plenty of outdoor space for us to explore, and close to other hiking trails in the area. It was truly a relaxing stay, even when the weather turned bad. We just started a fire and stayed in with some snacks and a good book to read.
Jim the owner made sure we had everything we needed and responded within a few hours to any question I had.
Time went by way too fast and we will be coming back for sure. I was looking for solitude and tranquillity and that's what I found at Doublehead Mountain retreat!!
The peaceful solitude will sooth your soul....
My wife, our pup Tug, and I enjoyed a memorable week at Doublehead Mountain Retreat. The cabin was comfortable and warm during the coldest week of the year. Indeed, the fridge temperatures were no match for the wood burning stove and hot tub that awaited us each day. We hiked among the welcoming mountain peaks, and explored the deep woods that surrounded the cabin. And there was plenty of open space for Tug to play “stick” and “chuck-it”. He was in heaven. The weather was ideal for our liking, with snow blanking the landscape against brilliant blue skies and sunshine. And at night the dazzling heavens were never-ending. But it was the peaceful solitude that captured our hearts most. The experience reminded me of a quote from the naturalist John Muir….
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”
We were in much need of a return to Nature, to shed the heavy burden of city life. Doublehead Mountain Retreat was perfect in every way. I highly recommend this property to anyone longing for a reawakening of the spirit.
Thank You for the kind words. We strive to make your stay one of a kind and a memorable one. Please come back to visit anytime.

Perfect family getaway (very dog friendly)
This is the perfect place to stay for a family getaway! It has everything you could want: a hot tub, fire pit, grill, lake, you name it. It's so secluded and very dog friendly. Jim was just a phone call away and was readily available at all times during our visit. Just a few examples: We thought the propane in the grill was low and he sent someone out to replace it, we left a jacket and he mailed it to us, and we even asked to stay an extra night and he made it work!
Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a cabin to fit 4-5 people. It's a guaranteed good time for those who love the outdoors/want to get away for a few days.
Nice Cabin in a Beautiful setting
Took my wife up there for her birthday and we had a great time. The cabin was clean, comfortable and allowed us kick back and relax. We even got to enjoy some snow, which is rare for those of us living in the southeastern NC. Jim was also easy to contact and provided us with all the info we needed. Great place to kick back and get away from the day-to-day grind. Will definitely visit again.
Relaxing and very quiet
Nice older cabin that's secluded and comfortable. The cabin is clean and well equiped, the road in wasn't a problem but could be in snow or ice. Looking forward to staying there again.
