Hana is commonly known as the “Last Hawaiian Place.” Step back into the charm and casual elegance of old Hawai’i in an authentic, meticulously renovated plantation owners home in Hana. Once used to house managers from the sugar cane plantation days, this 1900 home, named Hale Ulu Lulu, underwent a major rebuilding (completed in early 2005 and constantly maintained) and is now completely restored with attention to historic detail, while providing every modern convenience. We have designed an open and airy layout with spectacular ocean and pastoral views from every room. Your eyes will delight on the beautiful Brazilian Mahogany floors, elegantly detailed, vintage style bath with dual-sided claw foot tub (great for romantic baths for two), granite kitchen counters with reclaimed Koa wood bar/counter and trim accents. A sliding panel of framed Tapa cloth between the bedroom and living area allows you to relax in bed to the incredible view or, when closed, to have complete privacy from the rest of the house. The furnishings are classic and comfortable with a Missionary antique and Asian influence. We have designed the cottage with warm tropical colors, original local artwork, Hawaiian antiques and Polynesian exotica. Though the house has a tasteful and elegant décor, you can still put your feet on the furniture and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. You will arrive to rooms filled with brilliant tropical flowers and orchids, 100% cotton, high thread count, quality linens and towels and quality soaps as well as coffee and green tea and fresh fruit to start off your first day with us – fine details on par with the finest luxury hotel at a fraction of comparable prices (really). Hale Ulu Lulu is part of a sprawling two-acre property surrounded by gracious lawns and verdant tropical gardens and foliage. We live on the property and constantly maintain our homes. They are meticulously cared for and we run our business like any fine hotel (sorry, no room service!). Though we usually greet you upon arrival and answer any questions, we leave you completely alone to enjoy your stay.
The Guest Houses at Malanai are named after the gentle cooling breeze , (named Malanai) known for this area of Hana. We are located just three miles south of Hana Town in the Maka’alae district, which is considered the most highly desired area of Hana. You are sure to fall in love with the picturesque and pastoral landscape, the ever-changing ocean colors and the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep at night. Walk 12 minutes to the world famous Hamoa beach (or a 2 minute drive) or 12 minutes in the other direction to the Venus pool- two of Hana’s most desired attractions – practically in our back yard!

About Ramaia Collins
Mary Carol Cabibi and Steven Gayle have been in love with the Hana area for more than twenty years. In 2016 they learned that Chris and Leokane Harrington-Pryor were interested in selling the Guest Houses at Malanai, and by April Mary Carol and Steve had become the new proprietors. They now live on the property with their family.
Ramaia Collins purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Ramaia Collins chose Hāna
The previous owners purchased this property in 2001 and worked continuously to create a paradise for themselves, their family and friends. In 2005 they began to offer this unique experience to the public. The new proprietors have retained all of the staff, and have maintained all of the landscaping, amenities, and warm aloha that the Guest houses at Malanai have become famous for. Only two of the homes on the large property are available to the public. As one of only three legally permitted vacation rental properties in the area, The Guest Houses at Malanai are often booked months in advance and are well deserving of their consistent #1 rating and stellar reviews.
What makes this Cottage unique
The Guest Houses at Malanai are located in the Maka'alae area of Hana, about 3 miles south of Hana Town. This area is considered the most desirable of Hana due to its close proximity to world famous Hamoa Beach and the Venus Pool, as well as the gentle breezes and open landscape which keep it cooler and more comfortable than other locations in the area. Maka'alae was once the fishing village of the area and boasts some of the most breathtaking coastline of all Maui. During whale season, it is the perfect place to see their migration and sometimes even hear them playing at night. Our rental cottages are both situated in a completely private setting, amid glorious landscaping that has been lovingly nurtured by the previous owners for more than a decade. Beautiful location on the wet side of the island
This cottage was so very charming. Exceptionally clean! View of the ocean across a pasture. Well equipped kitchen. Comfortable bed. We loved our stay here.
The cottage is exactly what it looks like in the photos. We were in Maui during a very rainy and high tide week which limited a few of our excursions. It was nice to be in a home that could still provide us with a Hawaii style environment while we had some down time. I would definitely stay here again!!
Perfect cottage in Hana!
We absolutely loved our stay at Hale Ulu Lulu! All of the previous reviews are spot on. We loved the beauty of Hana and staying in the cottage was a big part of the experience!
Relaxing, clean, great location
excellent bungalow in Hana. No external ambient lighting in the area so great for seeing the evening stars. the bungalow has everything you need for a relaxing stay in Hana. I recommend it without hesitation. Its just as pictured.
Amazing spot to relax and enjoy Hana's magic!
A very special place--from all the artistic touches, tropical oasis yard, and ocean view--to the well-equipped kitchen. Mahalo!
Such a dreamy oasis in paradise
We had such a amazing time in your Ohana, thank you for having us. From our late arrival and departure, we appreciate your care and commitment to providing us with such loving service. This home is magical, the property is peaceful and private. Location was so great, close to Hana, and the beach. The cool breeze from the ocean was refreshing. No air conditioning, but we managed. The bathtub was like being a princess in a fairy tale. I'm 5'9" and I rarely get to take a bath in a tub that is long enough and deep enough! That was the cherry on top! We experienced a flat tire on our rental, and the staff were so kind and sympathetic. The set back cause our delay checking out, but again the housekeeper and owner were very patient with us and supportive. Thank you so much for welcoming us into your home! We home to be back some day. Mahalo!
We are committed to you having exactly the vacation you have dreamed of, We will direct you to the activities in Hana, These include: Hiking (especially the famous bamboo forest at Haleakala National Park - 20 minutes down the road), in house massage and more, We will share our knowledge of Hana with you- where to find the secret spots, where not to go and where to buy local fresh fish when available!
