About Samadhi Butterfly

Originally from Michigan, I have been blessed to be a Hana, Maui resident since 1982. I run our B&B with my daughter. Together we have created this special place for our guests to enjoy and we keep busy making sure our 4-acre parcel is beautiful and manicured.

We were fortunate to have found this lush and peaceful spot on the Island of Maui. After my husband passed, my daughter and I needed a way to make a living, so we took advantage of having a space to renovate into a Bed and Breakfast, as this allowed Mercury (my daughter) and myself to stay at home, run a business and have a connection with wonderful folks from all over the world. This has worked out better than we could even imagined!

Samadhi Butterfly purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Samadhi Butterfly chose Kipahulu

We are 100% green (completely solar powered) and offer our guests the chance to enjoy the lifestyle and and views that one would expect of a tropical paradise. Although we are always happy to answer questions and can offer plenty of advice on any Hana activities or sightseeing spots, we ultimately respect the privacy of our guests and believe in making sure you have a peaceful and romantic stay while you are here. We are around when you need us… and respectful when you want to be alone.

What makes this cottage unique

We have the luxury of privacy, peace and quiet in our setting. Mercury and I enjoy staying on our blessed piece of paradise and working in nature to make things beautiful. We enjoy donating to the homeless with our abundant fruit from our trees. We get most of our social connections with the wonderful folks that visit our B&B. We enjoy being totally 'green' and helping provide true eco-friendly accommodations but with the creature-comforts one would expect of a wonderful place to vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Mother-Daughter team do a great job at hospitality in their

"Piece of Paradise". We enjoyed two of our dinners on the lanai

watching the sunset. One dinner we ate off of the bamboo tray on our

bed because of the rainfall. As the evenings progressed, we would sit

at the table and read, eat tropical fruit from the property then

crawl into the king size bed and watch the geckos crawl up the

outside of the windows. The croaking frogs and light rainfall lulled

us to sleep several nights.

We enjoyed coconut milk, mangoes and bananas from the beautifully

manicured grounds (a former banana plantation).

Once we were greeted and shown around, we were given complete

privacy, unless we sought them out with a question. I bought a nice

costume jewelry necklace from Mercury's collection of handmade

jewelry. We appreciated all of the plumerias and other exotic flowers

used to decorate our room.

We would recommend Ala Aina Ocean Vista, especially for honeymooners;

lots of privacy and beautiful scenery. The only sounds we heard were

the mooing of nearby cows occasionally, birds trilling, the wind in

the mango trees and the frogs at night. Ahhhhh, lovely!

This is the exact opposite of Kaanapali's hustle and bustle. it's

remote, quiet & relaxing. If you want to rejuvenate and enjoy nature,

this is the place to stay!

Beautiful and perfect accommodations and view

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property. The accommodations are unique and wonderful, with lots of special attention to detail. The bed was comfortable, the space was quiet, the view was amazing, our hosts were friendly and helpful, and the shower was really remarkable. Would stay here again in a heart beat and definitely highly recommend.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for letting us enjoy the beauty and serenity of your property!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I can't say enough about the wonderful and relaxing experience that we had at your B&B. The deck with the outdoor kitchen was one of the highlights of our stay. We could bring our own food, prepare it and enjoy it as we sat on the deck watching the sunset and rise. What a treat!!! Thank you for the eggs, fruit and bagels for breakfast. It was nice to wake up and lay in bed looking out the windows at the beautiful property. My husband said the windows surrounding the king size bed made it feel like we were sleeping outside. San and Mercury are so pleasant and hidden during our entire stay. The only time we really saw them was when Sam was working on her beautiful yard. Thanks again for making our 30th Anniversary very special. Our expectations were high and were greatly exceeded. Mahalo😘

The perfect secluded getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our short stay here. Next time we would stay longer. Very convenient to the park entrance. Our recommendation is to get some groceries for dinner. The dinner selection is very limited. The best options are the food trucks, but they close early. Loved sitting on the lanai enjoying the view. We would definitely stay again.

Beautiful, quiet Hana retreat

  • 5 of 5

A charming cottage in an amazing setting! We loved staying here. The setting just can't be beat. We enjoyed picking Star Fruit right on the property and having it for breakfast. There are also Mango, Papaya, and Banana trees when the season is right. The ocean is close enough you can hear the surf at night. It is close to Haleakala National Park, Ohe'o Gulch, and the Pipiwai trail. For those who want to leave the big resorts behind and get a taste of remote Maui, this is a great place to stay. The only downside we could see was that it was really far out on the Road to Hana. It is about 30-40 minuted past Hana and there are no services, restaurants, or stores nearby, but that is really part of the charm. Sam and Mercury were great hosts. This place is perfect for a charming, romantic getaway.

Breathtaking views, cozy room and patio, ok bed, very close neighbors, ants all over

  • 3 of 5

We cannot say enough about the views you'll get from this stay. They are breathtaking and gorgeous. The grounds are well kept and provide a very serene and tranquil escape. The bed is made up of two mattress toppers, one foam and the other memory foam. We were attacked by small ants on our last night there, which obviously made it tough to sleep. The only food that we had in our room what's from the chocolates the owner left on the bed. This turned out to be a really nice touch for our arrival but also for the ants. It was a little odd that the owner's daughter was sleeping in the Cottage next to us and shared her saying patio. With the windows open and close enough to hear any conversation, movements, or watching TV, it felt like we had a roommate. This property is listed as a bed-and-breakfast, but the only breakfast provided were bagels in the fridge. The shower does not have frosted glass or anything to block the windows and faces the main entrance to the property, which we found a little odd. The property wasn't so busy with people coming in and out but still ran the risk of someone seeing in unintentionally. The owner was so sweet and seem very sincere but did not offer compensation or much else for the issue with the ants. She blamed the environment but we stayed down the road at another property and didn't not have the issue. The owner there also put little chocolates on our bed too. Would we stay there again? Probably not due to lack of sleep and weak solar power (could not turn fan on high during the night) but we will always follow it up with the fact that the views were absolutely spectacular. If this place focused a little more on sealing up their room to prevent ants from coming in (hole in floor near TV, screens not properly lined up right, door trim had gaps, etc) and if they provided a proper mattress/bed to sleep on then we would stay here every year. Would give one star but the views saved their rating and is worthy of two stars by itself.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your compliments about our property. We strive to be as “green” as possible and do treat for bugs/pests. However, we don't use toxic pesticides. It is Hana and a tropical environment. I was sorry that you had a tiny ant problem on the last night of your stay. I did not know it kept you from sleeping. Ultimately, I am disappointed you both did not fully enjoy yourselves and would like to refund you one night accommodations because we DO care. I will email you to obtain a mailing address. I am saddened, and shocked, to have read the other things you mentioned… * “BREAKFAST” - We provide “the makings for breakfast” (fresh eggs, bagels, jams, seasonal fruits when available, jellies, coffee, teas and the usual condiments). We do this so guests have more privacy and can eat when they want. * “MATRESS/BED” - The platform bed is custom made. Since it is custom and is a bit larger than a King size bed it is impossible to find a standard mattress. So the memory foam mattress is also customized. Typically guests say they have a great night sleep and it is very comfortable. * “OWNER’S DAUGHTER” - My daughter and I both own and run the business together. Our accommodation is a “suite” and not a separate cottage. It’s connected to the main house where my daughter resides. We have been accommodating guests for over 17 years and give priority to the privacy, peace and quiet for our guest’s entire stay. * “SHOWER” - When we designed our guest accommodations, we felt the shower should have a clear glass window (not frosted), because it looks out onto the groves of coconut trees and ocean. Although you may see an occasional car, they can not see you due to the angle and the fact that this portion of the driveway is 50ft away (at closest). Moreover, there’s a mango and pine tree in between that impede any car’s line-of-site. We only have one accommodation so we do not have people walking around on the guest’s side of the property. * “SOLAR POWER” - We are indeed “off the grid” and rely 100% on green energy. This does come with some “sacrifices” (when the sun goes down) and we do request that the fan is not run at high speed. Temperatures in Hana drop significantly at night and we have not had complaints before about fan speed. I am sorry that you felt that was an inconvenience. * “PATIO” or LANAI - There is NO “shared patio”. The suite has it’s very own large spacious deck/lanai that is separated from the main house. With aloha… Sam

Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Sam & Mercury's during our visit to Maui and they were definitely three of the best days of our vacation. The property is a truely an escape from it all and we loved exploring Hana / Kipahulu and relaxing at the house. There are a number of really great sites to explore close by - Venus Pools, Seven Sacred Pools / Bamboo Forest Hike, Red Sand Beach, Alelele Pool (a Sam & Mercury recommendation that we thought was a hidden gem). We loved cooking our meals in the outdoor kitchen, stargazing in the grass at night, and the peace and tranquility that surrounded us during our entire stay!
