About Brook Starr, a Hawaii Licensed Realtor

Born and raised on Maui in the area known as 'upcountry', Hana has always been a place for us to visit and unwind, enjoy some surf on the unique black sand beaches, hike around, and reconnect. We hope you can share in the experience as well.

Brook Starr, a Hawaii Licensed Realtor purchased this house in 2011

Why Brook Starr, a Hawaii Licensed Realtor chose East Maui

Surrounded by lush green trees in close proximity to town and beaches, very clean and newly renovated, this house has become our home away from home.

We love being with the family in Hana to play at the beach, surf together, enjoy Hana's quiet and beautiful surroundings to unwind and recharge. It's a tropical paradise.

What makes this house unique

After searching for some time, we saw this Hana Bay View home as the perfect opportunity and location to take in all that Hana has to offer. We gave the house some love and attention, renovated it and let it shine. Notes:
Our home is located in the rural town of Hana, on the East side of Maui. There are beautiful beaches nearby, including Hana Bay, a 10 minute walk away, and Hamoa Beach, a 10 minute drive down the road, consistently named one of the most beautiful beaches in America, where we like to spend our time surfing, swimming with the kids, and lounging under the shady trees. Lots of hiking to see waterfalls and swimming in fresh water pools, including Oheo (Seven Sacred Pools) that is part of the U.S. National Park Service and Waianapanapa State Park that has a cool volcanic grotto you can swim in, a black sand beach, and a blow hole along the coastline. Or just relax on the covered deck, play some cards, board games, read a book, or enjoy a movie or two via the wireless internet on your computer or tablet, or rent a movie from Hasegawa General Store and watch it on the flat screen TV in the living room upstairs.

Centrally located budget friendly

  • 3 of 5

We (three adults and one child) stayed for three nights. The rental was centrally located for easy access to sites along the Hana coast. It was only a couple minutes drive to Hana bay and the general store. The rental was generally clean with some exceptions for rust and other wear and tear associated with a humid climate. And we did buy a new sponge for washing our dishes as the old one was a bit suspect. The rental was adequately stocked with essentials and the beds were reasonably comfortable. The rental was very hot inside when we arrived but we were able to cool it off with the two air conditioners in the bedrooms and then keep it cool by closing the windows and blinds during the day. This was a great budget friendly option in expensive Hana and we very much appreciated having the kitchen rather than just a hotel room. All of the amenities were as described. We are so glad we stayed a few nights in Hana and were able to have time to soak in all the amazing sights this side of the island has to offer.

Beautiful Hana

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable and well situated accommodations. Has everything you need, except a dishwasher. That didn't bother us though as we are a small family of three. Flexible owner/manager and washer/dryer on site. Loved Hana.

well maintained, too close to neighbors

difficult to park and get out of driveway

could the border hedge be trimmed down so view of ocean from 2nd floor lanai could be seen

otherwise nice 2 bedroom unit

would help if the fruit that had fallen which was rotting and beginning to smell was removed before we got there

Owner's Response: Thank you Patrick for your comments! As an update, we've since trimmed the hedge to allow for the ocean view again from the second floor deck, and we've spoken to the gardening team to have the fruit picked up more consistently to avoid any smell or fruit flies, thank you for bringing that to our attention. The parking is tight since we're in a small neighborhood, though it is onsite which is super convenient. We allow a maximum of 3 cars on property (two for the main house and one for the cottage), which always leaves a turn around area to reverse into and out of and up the driveway. References to the parking locations and the turn around area are made on the site plan that is emailed out to guests once you've registered. If anyone has any questions or comments about the site plan or other items please let us know, we're happy to help. Aloha! Brook

Lovely home, like being in a tree house

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed four nights at this lovely, bright, airy and clean home. We stayed in the upstairs unit and it was perched among beautiful, lush trees so it felt like being in a tree house. Despite the humid and rainy climate, there was no trace of mouldy smell. The house is an easy walk to the town beach and little community. The house is near a main road but we were not disturbed by road noise and there is very little traffic. Don't miss the park about 9.5 miles south of town and its four mile round trip hike to a dramatic waterfall, you ascend through rain forest and bamboo groves. The Thai food truck in town is excellent too.

Good location. All the basics included

  • 3 of 5

Brook was extremely helpful and responsive. She provided a lot of recommendations and answered every question we had!

The house itself was as described. It was nice and cool (we stayed there on 2 very rainy days) and had all the basic necessities. Unfortunately we were not able to take advantage of the patio and BBQ due to the weather.

The house is centrally located. I suggest bringing groceries with you to Hana as the aren't many places to eat there. The 2 grocery stores have a very small selection.

As noted in other reviews some of the things at the home could use upgrades (patio furniture etc). Overall the house is cosy and very suitable for families.

Owner's Response: Thank you Amy for your feedback. As an update, we've since replaced the patio furniture, appreciate you for bringing that to our attention. And you're absolutely right about groceries, we also recommend bringing groceries from the other side, our favorite health food market that has everything you could need is Mana Foods in Paia, which is at the start of your journey to Hana. Aloha! Brook

Our vacation rental is located in the rural town of Hana, on the East side of Maui.

There's also a park with swings, shade trees, bathrooms and skate park about a 2 minute walk away.

Or just relax on the covered deck, play some cards, board games, read a book, or enjoy a movie or two via the wireless internet on your computer or tablet, or rent a movie from Hasegawa General Store and watch it on the flat screen TV in the living room upstairs.

There are many mom and pop places to eat, including a bright orange burrito food truck right in town with great burritos, coffee and pastries that is owned/operated by Andy and Tuna, a brick oven pizza place, thai food stop, other 'plate lunch' stops, and fresh organic fruit and veggie stands where much of the food is grown organically right here in Hana.

There are two main general stores in town to get most of your basic necessities. If you want a large variety of food to choose from though it may be wise to get some provisions from the main part of the island before you head out to Hana. Our favorite food store on the island is Mana Foods, in the town of Pa'ia on the North Shore, where they're loaded with fresh, natural and organic grocery shopping, a deli, bakery and vitamin room. Although, we also frequent Hasegawa's General Store and the Hana Ranch Store in town during our stays.

The road out to Hana itself is half the treat, with dramatic scenery of the cliff-lined coastline, a couple of fruit stands (including a mobile creperie along the road in the jungle as you begin your journey!), and lots of hikes from trail heads off the road. As with any adventuring please be cautious and aware of your surroundings and weather conditions while enjoying the outdoors.

A tip for the drive out to Hana, pack a lunch with snacks and drinks, don't rush it, and pull over for faster drivers if they come up behind you. There are many pull-out spots, the drivers behind you will appreciate it, and you can relax and really soak in the beauty.

There is one gas station in Hana town, and none along the 2-hour drive from the main towns on the other side of the island, so fill up before you get here.

Hana is a tropical paradise, which means it has little critters like mosquitoes, or ants at times, and don't be surprised by the odd chicken or two, mongoose, (cows, there's a beautiful working cattle ranch) or other wildlife in an around Hana town and the East side of the island. Our home is usually nice and breezy, and we have quarterly treatments of the outside and inside of the home with natural repellents, so there should be little activity of small critters, however, closing screen doors and cleaning up food after eating is always a good idea. We have some mosquito repellent there if you need it, just in case. And if you have any problems please let us know.

Our location is very convenient to the beaches, sites and stops in Hana, with great views, and as can be seen from the photos and mapping, we are in a residential setting. Like most neighborhoods there can be typical activity like kids playing, neighborhood dogs barking occasionally, and some rural road noise. We have a large solid redwood fence along the rural road and plantings around the property to make you feel tucked away. Feel free to get in touch with us to answer any questions you may have.

The 2br/1ba rental rate is $199/night, a one-time cleaning fee of $65 plus taxes and fees, which you can reserve yourself online. Maximum number of guests is 4.

If you have additional members in your party please call or email us, we can refer you to additional rentals in the immediate area to accommodate everyone.

We hope you enjoy your stay!!!
