About Reuel & Sara Detweiler

We moved on the family farm in 1965. The Chalet was built in 1976 on the 30 acres of woods on our farm. Reuel and I are now retired, but his last 10 years of employment were spent building log homes in the county and surrounding areas. Sara spent 20 years employed by the AuSable Valley Nursing Home in Fairview. We have 3 sons who helped us with the mowing and cleaning as they were growing up. They now live in Goshen, IN, and Columbus, OH. Over the years, it has been our pleasure to meet many people, from many walks of life. Just this week, one of our renters said they have been coming here since our children were small (30 years). Our cottage has been updated each year and many return to see what is going to be new this year.

Reuel & Sara Detweiler purchased this cottage in 1976

Peaceful & Pleasant

  • 5 of 5

We both enjoyed our stay very much. It was Very Comfortable & had a Very Beautiful setting! We enjoyed sitting on the deck in the morning drinking our coffee & looking at the lake which was like a mirror reflecting the trees! In the early evening we had a campfire eating our dinner or having snacks! Wish we would have stayed at least one more night. We have already talked about going back with our friends!!! Can't Wait! What can I say ... but "Pleasant & Peaceful". Thank You

Absolutely Beautiful!

My wife and I had a fantastic time celebrating our anniversary here. We hiked, we took the paddle boat out, we had a couple of campfires, and we were able to really relax. The dog also loved it! We will definitely be back.

Another wonderful week at Detweilers Chalet

  • 5 of 5

Another wonderful week at Detweilers Chalet. We had a bit of a rough patch when our dog had a medical condition back in the trails, but Reul helped us get him out and we are forever grateful! Thankfully, he's going to be okay and the rest of the trip was pure bliss! We spent the first few days with grandchildren, fishing (our 9 year old cleaned up with all the fish she caught!!!) playing games..riding the Au Sable train (what a treat!) The rest of the week was for my husband and I and we couldn't love the solitude more! We golfed, visited friends in the area, enjoyed the fishing (husband caught quite the catfish this year!) Long hours by the bonfire and enjoying the seclusion. We've been coming here for the last 9 years and are looking forward to many more years to come! Thank you Sara and Reul for your hospitality and generosity!! See you in October for our Annual Anniversary trip!!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Once again we had a great time here - it is the perfect space for us and our dogs. The setting is extremely peaceful and relaxing, the cottage is very clean and well laid out. We can't say enough good things about this place or the owners - all around a class act.

26 year tradition in this very spot. Wonderful memories spent here.

  • 5 of 5

My daughter was 1 yr old when we first came here. She is 26 now and graduating college. This is our family tradition during memorial weekend. We have had so many wonderful memories here. Hopefully we can continue with our grandson now. He just spent his 3rd memorial weekend there. Caught his first bluegill this year. 2 boats, swimming if it's warm, firepit for smores and hotdogs! Supplied firewood for firepit and wood stove inside if you want to use it. Perfect place to gather. Private and beautiful. 35 acres wood to roam. Absolutely beautiful! Can't wait til next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you Lucky for sharing about your 26 year history here. It's been great to have you and see your family grow from small children to having a child of their own. And I remember some memorial Days when you braved the chilly waters for a swim. We love our repeat customers! Thank you, Reuel and Sara

We live in Amish country. They provide the area with unique places of business including a bulk food store with items you don't find in your grocery store, Pioneer Place (unique hardware), Amish furniture, & Health food store.

Deer, Turkey and other wildife can be seen in the woodland and surrounding area and many species of birds make Lori Lane their home.

Field glasses will make bird watching and hiking the mowed trails more interesting.

Nearby are two golf courses, a Pioneer Museum, The AuSable Valley Railroad, horseback riding and canoeing on the AuSable River.

Groomed snowmobile trails, downhill and cross country skiing, elk viewing and more, are only a short drive away.

In the SPRING, melting snow brings maple syrup, wild flowers, and mushrooms. Spring is also the best time for viewing deer, turkey and migrating birds.

SUMMER is family time for hiking, fishing, swimming or basking in the Michigan sun. There is time for day trips to Mackinaw Island, or Light Houses along the shore.

FALL brings Autumn colors (one of the most

colorful spots is right here in Oscoda County), and campfires or quiet frosty mornings to refresh one's spirits after the nonstop rush of summer.

WINTER snow and frozen lakes bring joy to skiers, snowmobilers, and ice fisherman. The young at heart can enjoy a romp in the snow or a good book by the crackling fireplace.
