Why Gerald & Ruth Hirsh chose West Harwich

My dad always took us to the Cape on a summer vacation since I was about 7. So buying a home on Old Cape Cod was not a problem. Captain Alexander's is only 3. Tenth of a mile from a great warm water beach. And Harwichport has lots of fun things to do while on the Cape.

What makes this house unique

Pack your car up with your beach chairs cooler beach blanket and all your fun things for the beach then drop everyone and everything off at the beach and put your car back in our driveway and walk to the beach less than 5 minutes. And save the price of parking and use it for the ice cream truck.

Great Location - Just What We Needed

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Crow's Nest as part of an extended family vacation on the Cape. We needed additional space as our relatives in Chatham did not have enough room.

The 2 bedroom Crow's nest was perfect for myself, wife, son, daughter and of course our dog. We brought a cot knowing there were 2 beds available.

The Crow's Nest had all the necessities as if we were home. We hosted a number of dinners accommodating numerous family members. We also had most lunches and breakfasts there. The living area was comfortable as were the beds. The bedrooms themselves were spacious allowing us to set-up the cot too. WIFI worked well as did the Apple TV. There is no cable TV but if you are confortable with Apple TV there are numerous streaming options (ESPN, Netflix. Hulu, HBO...) so plenty to watch.

The location is outstanding. You can drive to the beach but we walked since it was only 5 minutes away. Relatives live in Chatham which was a 15 minute drive. Plenty of restaurants and grocery stores close by. Went miniature golfing and saw numerous seals at the fish pier. The 9 hole par 34 Harwichport golf course is only 1.5 miles away. Course is first come first serve but a nice option if you don't want to spend 5 hours on the course not to mention it is 25 dollars to walk 9 holes.

Jerry was outstanding before during and after our stay providing information and answering questions. We would definitely go back for all the above not to mention it is one of the few places you can book in the summer on the Cape for less than a 7 night stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Stephan and Family, One of the ways we make your vacation special is to let you check in according to your schedule, and we do not require a seven night stay. Ruth and I travel extensively and most of the time need just 2 or 3 nights sometimes along the way. The Kichen is equipped so that you can find items that are used most of the time for putting together a good meal or something quick. Our location is close to Earle Road Beach and yes there are plenty restaurants within 5 minutes as well as the golf course you talked about. There is also the Cape Cod Rail Trail which vacationeers can bike or walk through the small towns, Cranberry Bogs, and lakes on the Cape it's only about 10 minutes from Captain Alexander's. Ruth and I have been in the Vacations Rental business since 1986 and we just don't rent you a place to stay we try to keep you informed as to what will be going on during your stay so we have our weekly news letter sent to you before you even arrival Thanks for taking time to write your review. Jerry and Ruth

Owner's Response: Dear Paula, Thanks for taking the time to write a review about The Crows Nest at Captain Alexander's. We strive to have a clean neat rental for guest with faimlies to enjoy. One of the reasons we purchased this home was it's convenient location to Earle Road Beach, and the small town of Harwichport which has lots of restaurants and exciting things for kids to find and do. The bike trail that takes you through most of the towns on Cape Cod is also only about a mile from Captain Alexander's and many guest find it enjoyable to bike or even walk around the cranberry bogs and lakes of Cape Cod. Once again thanks for taking the time to write a review.

Older apartment, clean, good for kids

  • 4 of 5

We stayed four nights at the Crows Nest. Property owner was helpful via email before our arrival with tips on local places; I had to text the onsite manager to find out when we could check in but he was friendly and helpful with anything we needed.

Upon arrival, our first impression was that the garden out front was a little overrun with weeds and in need of some attention. The apartment is upstairs; entry stairway is a little musty with old wallpaper (reminds me of my parents' basement). Apartment itself is half renovated (newer tile, carpet, appliances, furniture) but some items are older (kitchen/bath cabinets, vanity in bath old and rusted, shower rod rusty, old bathroom tile).

Overall, very clean if outdated. Mostly childproof for my two children under 4. It didn't bother me too much that the house was older, but my husband felt it wasn't somewhere he wanted to spend much time. The backyard was also a little lacking on landscape and we didn't spend any time out there.

We spent most of our time on the cape exploring. We were able to make the drive up to Provincetown to go whale watching, and made a number of stops along the way. Location is convenient to most things; not much that was within walking distance though. Crow's Nest was a good place for our first trip to the Cape, and certainly adequate for a short stay.

Owner's Response: Ruth and I are happy you spent time exploring Cape Cod. Our web site has check in time listed as 2 PM and over the years we have found that vacationers like tha fact that they don't have to hunt down a realtor to check into the Crows Nest a simple text to alert our management team of aproximate arrival time makes checking in a breeze. The home was built in the 50s but as you noted we have one of the cleanest homes in West Harwich for a vacation rental. It's the beach that most guest want to be able to walk to and we are only a 5 minute walk to Earle Road Beach. We thank you for your review and will address the Shower Rod.

Perfect location

  • 4 of 5

The apartment is in a split level house and you stay upstairs that is equipped with everything. Very clean and well taken care of. They have a fenced in backyard so it's nice to have the dogs run around out back minus there is not really any grass. The area is gorgeous and so many places to go for a walk, a jog or bike ride . The house is located from earle beach that is about a 5 min walk. Definitely recommend this place for anyone in the future. We will be back! Also the owner keeps in contact and send out info for different places to visit while staying there. Ben who oversees the property is extremely nice and helpful in getting you settled in.

Owner's Response: Dear Mari and Family, Ruth and I have been In the vacation home rental industry since 1986 and have always rented our own properties both in the USA and Central America. We never give them to realtors which insurers you rent directly from the owners. We take pride in renting the cleanest vacation homes in the industry and appreciate that you found our home clean and well maintained. We personally stay in each of our properties prior to the vacation season and take care of any items that might be in need of maintenance. There are many beaches right off of Lower County Road and our 2 favorites are Earle Road and Pleasant Street both within an easy walk. One of the ways we ensure that your vacation will be special is to keep you informed of happenings during the week of your vacation, interesting places to visit and great restaurants. Ben and Stacey have been with us now for about seven years and we've gotten good feedback about his personality. Once again we thank you very much for your review as it helps keep Captain Alexander's as one of the top rentals in West Harwich Massachusetts.

Great rental on the cape!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four (me, husband and two toddlers) really enjoyed our time in the Cape and at Captain Alexander's. The backyard was great for grilling and hanging post beach. We really liked that we were able to shower the kids in the outdoor shower so that we didn't trek sand into the house. We did the easy walk to the beach daily (sometimes multiple times a day). We enjoyed ice cream at Sundae School (be prepared though its cash only!) and dinners at La Scala and Wee Packet.

Owner's Response: Dear Meredith, Thanks for taking the time to write a review for the Crows Nest at Captain Alexander's in West Harwich, Massachusetts. We're glad that you made use of the Weber gas grill and of course the great outdoor shower. Earle Road beach is only 3/10 of a mile from Captain Alexanders and a lot of our guess walk to it. Sundae School ice cream shop has been a favorite in West Harwich and Dennis for about 70 years. Once again we're glad you had a great time at the crows nest and hope the rest your summer turns out well.

Adequate and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Perfect size for 4 people. This is the upstairs apartment of a 2-family home, has its own yard, grill and outdoor shower. The manager lives in the downstairs apartment. Simple and clean apartment with central air and nicely decorated in beach theme decor. Furnishing is old fashion but totally functional and in good condition. You are here for the beach and the outdoors anyway, so who cares if the inside isn't of modern design and super luxurious furnishing? It even comes with beach chairs and coolers. A major supermarket 3 minutes away, great ice-cream place within 5 minutes. It is on frequently used road so we had to close the windows at night to sleep (which is totally adequate to block out the noise).

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your review of our property, your comments are very much valued. We really appreciate your comments regarding our decorating, since my wife Ruth has been in the decorating field for many years. The home was built in 1956 and we try to kept it in excellent conditions. The Sundea School Ice Cream shop has been serving homemade ice cream since I was first vacationing on Cape Code when I was 8 years old back in 1958. It's always on our list to stop into. We are so happy you received a perfect family vacation from home.
