About David Hamm

My wife and I grew up on the coast of southern California where the ocean was a big part of our lives. We decided to make a move to the Big Island to enjoy the great year round weather, warm water, healthier and slower lifestyle.

David Hamm purchased this studio in 2011

Why David Hamm chose Kailua-Kona

We bought this property because it was beautiful, in the same wonderful neighborhood we were living in and close to the most popular beaches in Kona. The owner had taken such good care, it was designed to take in guests and we saw it as a opportunity to continue making it a place that can be enjoyed by visitors wanting to experience the Kona lifestyle, something we get to live everyday.

What makes this studio unique

It is so close to the ocean, you can hear the waves crashing on the lava rock at night. You can walk down to the beach to watch the sunsets.

Warm welcome to an affordable and fully equipped studio apartment ready for at-home living

  • 4 of 5

We especially appreciated the owner's warm welcome and attention to needs and requests. David Hamm opened the door to a studio unit which was clean, furnished, and fully equipped: microwave, Wi-Fi, TV, convection plate, kitchen utensils and supplies, refrigerator/freeze, full bath, ample space and hangers for clothes, and even a shopping bag. When the absence of a hair dryer was noted, David cheerfully provided one. Because this was our first visit to the Big Island, we needed travel advice. Again, David came through, recommending which destinations and routes would work best for day trips. There are so many interesting sights and activities on the Island of Hawaii, including its history and rich cultural heritage.

Unfortunately, the highway noise from one block away disturbed our sleep, and the chicken coops emitted odors, offset somewhat by the character they presented. Our nickname for Hawaii became "Land of the Wandering Chicken."

For an improved accommodation, we recommend that the owner add a folding table and a couple of folding chairs, furnishings which would enhance the dining-in experience and indoor activities, such as games, writing, and computers.

Awesome location on a budget

  • 4 of 5

Great location just off Ali'i Drive, close to Magic Sands and a great snorkel beach! Its a smaller room with few amenities but it was all we needed and really enjoyed our stay. The birds are up early and there is some traffic noise, but I would recommend it for the location and cost.

Affordable, comfortable great location

  • 4 of 5

Dave is really all that the former reviewers said. A great host. He took really good care of us and we really want to say a big extra thank you for all the fresh eggs. We laughed every morning at the girls - careful not to leave your trunk open the chickens like to check things out. lol

Our bed was comfortable and the room was just enough for our needs. Really liked that hot plate for cooking. The chairs need new cushions and Dave was planning to replace those. The room could also use a table to sit at to eat. The fans were wonderful. There were no windows on the one wall and we were a bit concerned about safety - but we had absolutely no issues. The people upstairs can be heard because there are no windows - so that is good to know if you want privacy. All in all a great affordable holiday! Oh and close to the best beaches. Thanks a million Dave!

Perfect location

  • 4 of 5

The studio was perfect for coming back at the end of a hard day of playing. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. You have fridge, microwave, and even a super nice hot plate (can't remember what it was called) so you can make as many of your meals as you want there. David even has a bbq you can use. David was very hospitable and helpful.

Only negative is if you get inconsiderate renters upstairs you may need ear plugs. We stayed a couple of weeks and most of the time it was no problem, the people upstairs were great. We just had some people for a few days that were extremely loud.

We would definitely stay again as you can't beat the location. You can walk to a beach or drive to all the activities on Ali's Dr in minutes.

Great location, great value, great owner

  • 5 of 5

You can't beat the value of this property. It's close to everything in the Kona town area, but is off the main roads, so nice and quiet. It's within about 1/2 mile of Magic Sands Beach and Kahalu'u Beach, and about a mile from the Keauhou shopping center. The inside kitchen has all the needed equipment for breakfast and lunch and an outside grill for dinner. The best part of renting here is the owner. David is as helpful and friendly as can be. I've rented from him multiple times and have always found him to be incredibly welcoming and accommodating. It's the perfect place for a single or couple to base themselves if you're going to be active around the island.
