Beautifully furnished 5 Bedroom Home
Aloha! My husband and I just recently moved to Makaha from the mainland and hoped to lure my mom to move here by purchasing a large home which to us is considered a duplex. In Hawaii they consider it an ohana ( Mom decided not to let her 'stay-cation' begin until she decides to retire, which in my opinion will not be anytime soon. The result is a vacant, beautifully furnished 5 bedroom and 3 bath oasis. Not only does it have the standard 'fully furnished' amenities, but it's 'fully loaded' for fun!! ( fishing poles and light tackle, snorkels, body boards, life jackets, etc) and for young families...high chair, playpen, stroller, etc Prior to moving to Paradise, we travelled extensively and recognize how hard and expensive it can be to pack 'everything but the kitchen sink' so we have taken care of everything for you. Our guests are very important to us, and are always available for any of your needs, questions, etc. We are new to the world of vacation rentals and don't have many reviews yet. We invite you to help change that;)
This is Sophie eagerly awaiting new guests, so she can properly greet them;)
Melissa Morris purchased this house in 2014
Nestled amongst the locals, the spacious house provided a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy Hawaii. Great local beaches!
We had a great week here! The house is very nice, yet also homey and inviting. It is the perfect layout to visit and has everything you could need during your stay! The beach is gorgeous with the sea turtles and the tide pools. The house is not in a touristy part of town, but the locals were all very nice and welcoming! Tanya the property manager was great, and the local celebrity surfer Danny came to make recommendations for places to see and check to make sure we were okay during our stay, which was also very nice. There are roosters next door, but after the first night we got used to the crowing, and the kids thought it was so cool to see chickens and roosters in someone's yard. Thank you Melissa for making your home feel like home! I would definitely stay here again!
Good things with this house:
1. Property manager Tanya, She is great and very helpful.
2. House is clean and spacious.
3. A private beach is nearby.
Problems with this house:
1. It was really hard to contact the owner. No replies to my questions at all. I had to contact Home Away customer support to get another number of the owner.
2. Cockroaches in the house.
3. Be aware of the bad traffic from Waikiki or some popular destinations.
4. There were no soaps and shampoos so we bought some from the market for 3 bathrooms.
5. Problems with the neighborhood: Roosters and dogs are really annoying. The roosters crow every morning from 3:30am to almost 9am and it was really loud. That was the main problem with us because we had to deal with a lack of sleep due to the noisy roosters early in the morning. We originally booked this house for 4 nights but we had to decide to move to another place. As a result, we stayed here for 2 nights and we got another hotel for the other 2 nights.
First of all, I can't say enough good things about the property manager and owner. They were attentive to our needs, and did the best they could to help us with problems we ran in too.
With that being said, we had a few issues arise during our week stay that made us very uncomfortable. The house is located in an area that has a very high homeless population and requires at LEAST a 30 minute drive (typically longer) to reach any tourist destination. Also, the house itself is located right next to a house that has several dogs, chickens and roosters. Not only do the roosters crow early every morning, the smell from next door makes it unpleasant to sit outside. We had young kids and would have loved to play in the front yard, but between the smell and a pit bull on 2 occasions wandering in our yard we hardly spend anytime outside. The same neighbor threw a large party on the weekend that resulted in the police knocking on our door after what sounded like a gunshot or possibly fireworks telling us to stay inside and "keep our families safe." At this point we almost left the house to get a hotel and forfeit the money we had already paid.
The other major problem we had was with rats inside the house. On a few occasions we saw they scurrying out from underneath the refrigerator and also saw droppings on counters, in cupboards, and around the bed and nightstand in the downstairs master bedroom.
I wish we could give this place a better review because the property manager and owner were so great and the house itself is nice, but felt we should review so others are aware before booking.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Makaha house.
The home was spotless when our family of 10 arrived and it was very nice to have someone waiting when we got there to show us around.
There was plenty of space for the ten of us. The beds were all large and comfy. The kitchen was well stocked and everything was in great working order. They even had water and box of chocolates ready for us... What a great touch! There are several people that take care of the house and they all stopped by to introduce themselves and make us feel welcome. They were all a wealth of info on what to see and do and they were SO kind and genuine. It really gave a great first impression of local Hawaiian people.
The first thing we did was run around the corner to the little beach and the turtles were just making their way on shore when we got there. We hung out there for a while, met a few locals who were really, really nice and even found a few coconuts to eat later. It was a great beach to check out and look at the turtles but if you head about 5 minute south there is beautiful Pokai Bay where you can fish and snorkel or even surf. This protected bay is perfect for little kids, SUP, kayaking etc...
If you head two minutes north from the house, there is Makaha Beach Park. Here you can watch surfers all day when the waves are pumping, and boogie board on the awesome shore break. If you keep traveling up the coast, you quickly get to the farthest point north you can drive and there are several isolated beaches that are breathtaking. We snorkeled here and saw lots and lots of fish. A turtle swam by my 7 year old boy and a few seals even came up on the beach. There is also a lava cave you can explore about 10 minutes up from the house.
As far as the neighborhood goes... If you are looking for a Waikiki-type tourist area or residential sub-division, this is not the place.
If you want to get a feel for a typical working class neighborhood on Oahu and see this amazing place for a reasonable price, then I would imagine this would be it. It was basically an hour drive from most "destinations" like Waikiki, north shore and Hanauma Bay. This was fine with us. We stayed around the great beaches most of the time and when we went places we just planed stops at great food places along the way.
Great time and we would stay here again.
Two major problems. First being that the house is located next door to some sort of property containing 10 to 15 roosters and a number of chained dogs. We (six adults and one 5 year old were all woken up at 4:30 every morning by the roosters and then the dogs. To say that our sleep was compromised would be a major understatement. We stopped trying to use the front deck area because it was just too upsetting to view these animals. Being tired from lack of sleep was not in our vacation plan.
We realized that after we saw this animal farm that we did not want to stay in this house and so immediately called the owner. She did not return our call. We wanted to cancel on the spot and find somewhere else. We could not believe that this house could claim to be a vacation home in this kind of neighborhood. Tanya, the property manager was pleasant and helpful but this issue was beyond her scope.
Second problem was roaches and rodents. Bread, kept in a kitchen cabinet has been eaten and some dry desert packs on the counter had been opened up and the roaches were found in each room.
Owner finally called us 5 days after our initial call. We emailed her our concerns, asked for a credit and have heard nothing since.
We would much rather have been able to write a positive review, but that's just not possible here. Besides being woken up by the roosters every morning, each day seemed to develop it's own problem, from the dog that howled all night, to the smell from next door to the rodents and roaches. In the end, we feel we have been misled
