About the property

Our house is located on the thin slice of land between Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake on a quiet unpaved road that was once the Main Street of the village of Grand Lake. There are many historic old cabins along the road including the Spider House next door where the owner grew up spending her summers. Our house was an outbuilding that we have converted into an open, comfortable and special retreat. An artist and a scientist, we have designed and decorated it with a mix of the old and the new. The house has many old items from the the area, collected from friends and family but also provides amenities like Wi-Fi, internet Radio and a Smart TV. There is no cable TV, so sports and news must be gathered from the radio or by visiting a restaurant in town where you can hang out with the locals and cheer on your team. The beds are comfortable and the house is warm and light and comfortable. We are surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park and you can walk (or ski in winter) out the door to miles of trails. A short drive will get you to many other trail heads in the park for many more miles of mountains, valleys, streams and lakes..and lots of wildlife. Moose, fox and deer wander through the yard and elk and bighorn sheep can be seen in the park. All sorts of songbirds, eagles, osprey and pelicans can be viewed. Our location between the 2 lakes offers very close (walking distance) access to a public boat landing on Shadow Mountain Lake and public dock on Grand Lake.

The Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater offers wonderful live entertainment and the town has many restaurants and plenty of shopping. There is a marina in town where you can rent kayaks, paddle boats or a pontoon boat. The Kaufmann Historic Museum is a great place to learn more about the old town including the neighboring houses.

In winter there is snow shoeing and cross country skiing out the door or in Rocky Mountain National Park. The Grand Lake Touring Center offers many miles of groomed trails, expert lessons and a free tubing hill. Granby Ranch, a small ski area, is 16 miles away. Mary Jane/Winter Park is a major resort and is 37 miles away (about 45 minutes). Berthoud Pass is a popular backcountry ski destination.

We spend several months at the house every year and it is very well cared for. We hope the house will be enjoyed as a place to relax and to appreciate the very special beauty of Grand Lake. We are hikers and skiers and the area provides and abundance of that but it is also a wonderful place to do nothing and let yourself luxuriate in the free time in the mountains.

Sorry, we do not allow any motorized vehicles (snowmobiles, ATV's or Jet skis) at the house.

About Holly Sumner

I grew up skiing, hiking, canoeing, sailing and mountain climbing in Grand Lake. I spent summer and winter vacations in the old log cabin next to this house. My parents bought that cabin in 1952. You can read about the house in several of the Grand Lake history books, we have them in the library. It was sold in 2000 and we renovated the Willowbranch (an out building of the old cabin) then to become our Grand Lake retreat. I am an artist. My husband loves Grand Lake as much as I do. He is a scientist. We try to spend as much time as we can in Grand Lake where we work and get out into the mountains. When we are not in Grand Lake we are in Beacon, NY and Woods Hole, MA.

Wonderful Christmas, Wonderful Home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed in Holly’s home for a week over the holiday and it was just perfect. Holly was extremely helpful and responsive, the home was very clean and stocked with books, games and kitchen equipment. The front yard was a great size for sledding, snowball fights and playing with our dog. All the rooms were of ample size, beds were very comfortable and everything needed for the wood burning stove was provided. Overall an amazing stay with an amazing host. We look forward to coming back.

Comfortable and quiet

  • 5 of 5

The interior is thoughtful and playful. It is clear that this cabin has been a fun but functional escape for generations. The exterior offers a loveley yard for our two kids. We were one mile from the beach area and biked over. We plan to stay again.

Beautiful house in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a very cool and very well appointed house in a great area. Close to all the Grand Lake amenities, but far enough away that you could avoid all of that if you wanted to. So many amazing hikes nearby! Holly was so nice and so responsive. The house was very well organized, and full of books and art. My family had an awesome stay there, and we did not want to leave!

From the house that felt like home, the animals in the yard, and the views from the porch!! This place became our second home. We spent 10 days in peace and tranquility. The owner Holly was so helpful & nice. We could not have had a better time in beautiful Grand Lake & this location. We will be back. Thank you Holly for one of the best trips this family has had ;).

Total dream house for a summer vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house is in a wonderful location. You can walk a block in either direction and hit either Grand Lake or Shadow Mountain Lake. Moose really do walk through the yard, as do deer and foxes and many birds fly through all day. The yard is spacious and well-stocked with lawn chairs, a hammock, and a great fire pit. The house itself is the perfect mix of comfortable and clean. It doesn't feel cold and un-lived in, like some vacation homes. It feels like the house of a close friend or family member, with everything you might need for your vacation. The place is clean and well-lit. And Holly was so nice to communicate with. She was quick to respond to any questions, and very helpful all around with suggestions about the house and how to make the most of our time in Grand Lake. Highly recommend!
