About the property

Hike and ski or just relax in a beautiful mountain home

Our house is located on the thin slice of land between Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake on a quiet unpaved road that was once the Main Street of the village of Grand Lake. There are many historic old cabins along the road including the Spider House next door where the owner grew up spending her summers. Our house was an outbuilding that we have converted into an open, comfortable and special retreat. An artist and a scientist, we have designed and decorated it with a mix of the old and the new. The house has many old items from the the area, collected from friends and family but also provides amenities like Wi-Fi, internet Radio and a Smart TV. There is no cable TV, so sports and news must be gathered from the radio or by visiting a restaurant in town where you can hang out with the locals and cheer on your team. The beds are comfortable and the house is warm and light and comfortable. We are surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park and you can walk (or ski in winter) out the door to miles of trails. A short drive will get you to many other trail heads in the park for many more miles of mountains, valleys, streams and lakes..and lots of wildlife. Moose, fox and deer wander through the yard and elk and bighorn sheep can be seen in the park. All sorts of songbirds, eagles, osprey and pelicans can be viewed. Our location between the 2 lakes offers very close (walking distance) access to a public boat landing on Shadow Mountain Lake and public dock on Grand Lake.

The Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater offers wonderful live entertainment and the town has many restaurants and plenty of shopping. There is a marina in town where you can rent kayaks, paddle boats or a pontoon boat. The Kaufmann Historic Museum is a great place to learn more about the old town including the neighboring houses.

In winter there is snow shoeing and cross country skiing out the door or in Rocky Mountain National Park. The Grand Lake Touring Center offers many miles of groomed trails, expert lessons and a free tubing hill. Granby Ranch, a small ski area, is 16 miles away. Mary Jane/Winter Park is a major resort and is 37 miles away (about 45 minutes). Berthoud Pass is a popular backcountry ski destination.

We spend several months at the house every year and it is very well cared for. We hope the house will be enjoyed as a place to relax and to appreciate the very special beauty of Grand Lake. We are hikers and skiers and the area provides and abundance of that but it is also a wonderful place to do nothing and let yourself luxuriate in the free time in the mountains.

Sorry, we do not allow any motorized vehicles (snowmobiles, ATV's or Jet skis) at the house.

About Holly Sumner

I grew up skiing, hiking, canoeing, sailing and mountain climbing in Grand Lake. I spent summer and winter vacations in the old log cabin next to this house. My parents bought that cabin in 1952. You can read about the house in several of the Grand Lake history books, we have them in the library. It was sold in 2000 and we renovated the Willowbranch (an out building of the old cabin) then to become our Grand Lake retreat. I am an artist. My husband loves Grand Lake as much as I do. He is a scientist. We try to spend as much time as we can in Grand Lake where we work and get out into the mountains. When we are not in Grand Lake we are in Beacon, NY and Woods Hole, MA.

Total dream house for a summer vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house is in a wonderful location. You can walk a block in either direction and hit either Grand Lake or Shadow Mountain Lake. Moose really do walk through the yard, as do deer and foxes and many birds fly through all day. The yard is spacious and well-stocked with lawn chairs, a hammock, and a great fire pit. The house itself is the perfect mix of comfortable and clean. It doesn't feel cold and un-lived in, like some vacation homes. It feels like the house of a close friend or family member, with everything you might need for your vacation. The place is clean and well-lit. And Holly was so nice to communicate with. She was quick to respond to any questions, and very helpful all around with suggestions about the house and how to make the most of our time in Grand Lake. Highly recommend!

We loved it.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely vacation. The house location is perfect; between the two lakes with scenic walks and beautiful mountain & lake vistas all round. The fall colors were splendid, the lunar eclipse spectacular, rising above the lake from behind mt. Craig. We were blessed. I awoke one morning to an elk bugling, there was a large bull with his consorts in the garden! The house itself is spacious, comfortable and well equipped, we wanted for nothing, well maybe an extra week or two?

Fabulous retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 weeks in August. It was perfection! The house is charming, comfortable, and spacious. We cooked a ton in the well equipped kitchen. There is a large yard where we enjoyed relaxing during the day and sitting by the fire in the evening. The house is well located and a pleasant walk from town. We hiked most days and there are several hikes that are within walking distance. I just loved our stay at the cabin and would love to go back again!

A Hidden Gem!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have stayed at this lovely home 3 times, each time for a week in the summer. To arrive at this home, one must cross a tiny bridge, once accomplished, the visitor is transported to a world away. You will find no tourists and you feel just ike a local. Despite it's tranquil location you are only a 5 minutes from the town of Grand Lake and about 4 minutes, from one of the best little general stores, I have been to.The house itself has everything for a relaxing vacation. It is quiet, clean, quaint, and there is even a visiting fox! The house is a 1 minute walk to a pristine, mountain ringed lake. Mornings are otherwordly. We canoed, mountain biked and took some of the most beautiful hikes of our lives. There is a spectacular hike right from the front door! Holly the owner, was gracious in giving us her local knowledge for where to go and what to do. The cabin is well supplied with books and maps of the area, so that you can also work out for yourself what to do. We cannot wait to return, maybe next time in the winter for a ski holiday!

Grand Lake, Colorado

Stayed here for a week as a base for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park and wished we'd stayed longer. Did not know anything about Grand Lake and was just looking for a quieter base town than Estes. Turned out to be perfect. Place is a block off lake so we got to swim each morning before taking off for the mountains. The lake and surrounding mountains are majestic. Town sits on western edge of RMNP so easy access to a spectacular park. The town itself is interesting as well - lots of cool old log structures built decades ago and plenty of good shopping and dining. Also, its quiet. Kind of an historic vacation town which holds onto an early 1900s look and feel (check out Grand Lake Lodge while you are there). House is very comfortable - all necessities, plenty of room and good working kitchen. Loved the fire ring as well - easy to sit outside and enjoy the nice views and cool evenings. Saw moose and fox without going anywhere. Happened to also intersect with hostess who was quite lovely. She clearly knows the area well - shared great information on climbing and hiking routes. That was a nice bonus. I highly recommend the town and highly recommend the house. Rates many repeat visits for us.

Fantastic Grand Lake stay

  • 5 of 5

My stay at this charming, lovely, comfortable home was not my first in Grand Lake but definitely my favorite. I have stayed at many places on the lake but this location is superior. Nestled between Grand lake and Shadow Mt lake, access to both town and open space is within walking distance. Easy to get to even on a snowy night, I was delighted by the warmth and convenience of the house. There is a cook's kitchen, awesome record collection, comfy beds, and immaculate bathrooms. I highly recommend this place and will be back.
