Vacation in the country without roughing it.
Our designer cottage is a cozy, very comfortable 1200 sq. ft. residence. You'll have everything you need--just like home. We are situated on 8 acres. We are a working farm growing hydroponic lettuce and greens. We also grow a commercial lavender crop. We are surrounded by woods, which are home to lots of wildlife.
The cottage has lots of windows and natural light. The doors opren up to the large porch, perfect for relaxing and communing with nature. We have a gas grill and outdoor furniture. There is also a fire pit.
The living area has a vaulted ceiling, which give the cottage a sense of openess and spaciousness. There is a working wood burning fireplace to enjoy in cooler weather.
The bedrooms are good size, as are the bathrooms, with lots of pillows, sheets, and towels. The kitchen is well appointed and has many necessary pantry items. There is a play loft for the kids. All rooms have TV's hooked up to Direct TV. There are two Blue Ray players. Two TV's have DVR.
We have a private electric gate at the bottom of the long driveway to discourage sightseers. The area is surrounded by 13 miles of forest between Asheville and Brevard. Infrequently, a storm disrupts the power. We have a standby generator which is emergency backup for the greenhouse and for the well pump.
There are 63 undeveloped acres next to us, and three neighbors on bucolic three acre sites on the other side.
It's very peaceful here with abundant wildlife. The area has wild turkeys, an owl who lives near our driveway hill, many rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, deer, foxes, coyotes, bears, geese, ducks, birds of all sorts, and fish in the pond. New additions include chickens and a miniature goat. Hendersonville is a bird sanctuary, a nature lovers paradise.
Our farming activities consist of managing the greenhouse and cutting lavender in the summer. The lavender field is between the cottage and the greenhouse. There is no heavy equipment; no traffic.
We have two small trails on our property. Next to the storage container at the end closest to the main house is the entrance to go down one trail. At the bottom of the hill, cross the bridge and walk up the other side. Our property intersects the middle of that pond. The meadow below belongs to the other neighbors.
The cottage has two good size bedrooms, 2 luxurious full baths--one with a shower, one with a tub. There are eight sets of towels in one bath, four sets in the other. A hair dryer is in the master bathroom, as well as a make-up mirror. The top vanity drawers have plastic compartments for cosmetics, toothbrushes, etc. The top drawer also has extra toilet paper and Kleenex. The bottom drawers contain towels. Each bathroom has a small window and an exhaust fan.
The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom. There is one king bed in the master bedroom, one queen bed in the second bedroom, sleep sofa, and a couple of Aero beds. The beds are new and very comfortable. There are two extra sets of king sheets and extra pillows in the master bedroom closet. There are three extra sets of queen sheets in the second bedroom. There is an extra king blanket and king down blanket; queen extra comforter and quilt; extra standard pillows in the drawers under the bed in the second bedroom. Two sets of twin sheets and blankets. Each bedroom has a flat screen TV.
Play loft for the kids. We have created a play space with a table and chairs and two comfy bean bag chairs. TV as well as board games.
Large kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances. Lots of pots and cooking utensils. Set of twelve porcelain dishes, set of eight melamine dishes for outdoor use. Three sizes of glassware for 10. Wine glasses for 12. Plastic wine glasses for outdoors. Plastic drinking glasses for outdoor use. Microwave, toaster oven, toaster, Keurig, drip coffee pot, cereal dispenser. Cereal dispenser contains quick oatmeal and Cheerios. Pantry has a few items: sugar, mustard, ketchup, mayo, salt, pepper, many spices, Stevia, Splenda, raisins, soup, olive oil, canola oil, ground coffee, ground decaf coffee, a few K-cups. Contents may vary. There are some cookbooks in the bookcase.
There is a washer and dryer in the laundry room. We have a Roomba to vacuum. There are cleaning products, if you need them. Housekeeping is available during your stay, if you want it, at $25/hr., minimum of 2 hrs.
The TV in the living room is on a swivel bracket. You can turn it to face the kitchen, the dining table, or the sofa. It also tilts up or down. We have Direct TV with most of the movie and sports channels.
There is no land telephone line. We currently use Verizon Mi-Fi for internet access.
There is a bistro table and two chairs on the porch; plush sofa with two chairs and four adirondack chairs also on the porch. There is a patio table and six chairs below; a fire pit with a bench and two chairs; a Weber grill and a gas grill.
We are dog lovers and welcome well behaved dogs. All dogs must be at least two years old and housebroken, spayed and neutered, non-marking, non-aggressive, well socialized dogs with current vaccinations and flea/tick treatment. We have dog dishes and dog towels.
Sorry, we are allergic to cats and can't have them in the cottage.
You will enjoy everything about your vacation in Hendersonville. We are in a rural area, but we're an easy drive to town. The best of both worlds.

About Brian Shapiro
We have recently retired from our jobs in Miami--general contractor and preschool teacher. We moved to Cape Coral, FL for six months of the year and Hendersonville, NC for six months of the year. We grow hydroponic lettuce and have a lavender commercial crop as well.
Brian Shapiro purchased this House in 2014
Why Brian Shapiro chose Crab Creek
Our family has owned the property for 35 yrs. We have always loved it and the location close to town and wilderness. We built a cottage to house family when they come to visit. When they're not here, we rent it as a vacation property. Enjoy rural peace and quiet and scenic wilderness nearby or restaurants and shopping in town.
What makes this House unique

Very cozy cottage!
We had a great time staying here. The cottage is very nice and has everything that you will need, very well equipped and organized kitchen. The beds are very comfortable with high end linens and warm down comforters. Brian is a very friendly and informative host, anything we needed he was right there to help. We did some great hiking in the mountins and got to see alot of wild life even on the property. This was a great trip for us to relax and recharge our batteries. The biggest plus for us was that we were able to bring our large dog along on this trip, she had a great time exploring nature.
We would love to come back.

We'll definitely be back!!!
We have nothing but great things to say about our visit to this property! I have never stayed in a cottage that was as well appointed as this! I mean, we could have moved in permanently and would have had everything we needed in the kitchen and elsewhere in the accommodation. Brian was very attentive to our needs and clearly a dog lover! The 3 days went by too fast, but we'll be back. We highly recommend this property.
Great modern cabin
Owners are wonderful to deal with. Cabin is very well appointed, beds are comfortable and linens are very nice. Kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. Overall we had a very pleasant stay here and would certainly stay again.
Clean, Quiet & Accommodating
The house is very comfortable, beautifully decorated, spotless, and has everything you need. Brian met us as the house upon arrival and gave good information about the house and the area. We enjoyed the quiet while watching the stars at night from any of the numerous outdoor sitting areas. The house and especially the beds are very comfortable. We never felt unsafe. We enjoyed a couple very good meals in the cute downtown of Hendersonville; our favorite restaurant was Postero. We would definitely return to this property.
Brian was great and the house was perfect. Very private and peaceful. I would definitely recommend this property.
Quiet and restful
Practically new, very good construction and materials, well furnished and supplied, very clean and a host who checks every day to see if you need anything.
Our rental house is in a fabulous location, 8 miles from downtown Hendersonville, 12 miles from Brevard, 16.5 miles from Saluda,, 22 miles from Asheville, 28 miles to Lake Lure, 41 miles to Greenville, SC. You can take easy day trips to many places like Cashiers, Highlands, Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Knoxville, Sevierville. If you have a motorcycle, there is no better location for great rides. One of the best is following the ridge along 276 to Ceasar's Head, SC. The picturesque ride from here to Dupont Forest and then to Caesar's Head is so picturesque, and the view is amazing. Caesar's Head is about 20 min. from the property. Kanuga Conference, a large Episcopalian retreat, is in walking distance. You can hike in their 1200 acres (no pets allowed). You can attend church on Sunday in their chapel in the woods in the summer. Holmes State Educational Forest is 3 miles from us. Really nice picnic area. Dupont State Forest is 5 miles away. Pisgah National Forest is 20 miles from the house. Camp Kanuga, Camp Pinnacle, Camp Ton-A-Wandah, Blue Star Camps, and Camp Tekoa, Camp Bonclarken, Camp Joy, and Camp Wayfarer are 5 to 10 minutes from the property. A 600 acre wedding venue, Jeter Mountain Farm, is close to us as well. The Bike Farm is 3-4 miles from the house. They offer the best biking experience in Western North Carolina. They cater to all abilities; have tours and events, and instruction is available. They have events in conjunction with Oskar Blues. We are situated in the perfect location for enjoying all the area has to offer. All activities are somewhere between 10 minutes and one hour away. It's an easy drive with no mountain switchbacks to almost all the cities near us. The nearest grocery store, The Fresh Market, is 7 miles from the house. Harris Teeter is about another mile from there, as is Ingles. The fire dept. is less than a mile from our house. Our residence is about 1000 ft. from the rental house. There are three other houses near us, each on picturesque three acre lots. We have an electric gate to discourage sightseers from coming up our long driveway, which is about 1/2 mile from Crab Creek Rd. Crab Creek Rd. is the main road to Dupont Forest, and also a main road to Pisgah National Forest, Brevard, Cashiers, and Highlands. Hendersonville now has several good restaurants. Many are downtown on Main St. We also enjoy Hubba, Hubba Barbeque, The Wood Room (barbeque and wood fired pizza), Seasons at the Highland Lake Inn, Great American Hot Dog (really good seafood--lobster rolls, fried clams; hamburgers, hot dogs, soup), Kin's Kitchen Chinese food (very good; every dish has its own flavor). The Underground Bakery is great. Joey's Bagels can't be beat (as good as any NY bagel). There are many craft breweries in the area. Sierra Nevada newly opened their restaurant, and the brewery is open for tours nearby in Mills River. Book online only. Their 90 acre property has hiking and biking trails as well. Oskar Blues Brewery is 10 miles from the house in Brevard. They have a tasting room. We like to go to the many U-Pick farms in the area. September is apple picking time here. Strawberries in June and peaches in July. Pumpkins are everywhere in Oct. on 64 where most of the apple farms are. There are a couple of corn mazes in the area in the fall, and I believe one runs a haunted maze in Oct. Zip lines are just north of Asheville and close to Saluda, NC. Eco tourism is popular. There are a couple of wineries that give tours and have tastings. Burnt Shirt WInery has a lunch cafe. Horseback riding is available in Pisgah National Forest. My neighbor also has gentle, trained horses for rent. You can make arrangements to have him take you to Dupont Forest with the horses. It's soooo beautiful. ASAP, a farm promoting non-profit, offers a farm tour every Sept. You can visit something like 30 farms over two days. A couple of times in the summer, a member farm hosts a fund raising dinner on their farm. Antiquing, shopping, driving the scenic routes, hiking, tubing, and much more is available close by. Some of the world's best fly fishing is on the Davidson River in Pisgah. You can just pull your car over by the fish hatchery and go fishing (license needed). There are guides at the outfitter at the entrance to Pisgah. There is a large garden/flower show in Hendersonville in May, and the Apple Festival is the first weekend in Sept. There are too many festivals and art events in the summer and fall to list here. Don't forget to go to the many area farmers markets. This area has quite a few artisan food producers. I'm sure I've left out many activities. This area is incredibly beautiful, interesting, and friendly. You will have a hard time finding the time to do everything that interests you.
