About Brad and Erin Authier

Erin grew up in Durango, and Brad grew up on a farm/ranch in South Dakota. The IrmaJ is a special place they are happy to share.

Brad and Erin Authier purchased this chateau / country house in 2012

Why Brad and Erin Authier chose Southwest

Erin was born and raised in Durango, and her family has been in the area since the 1800s, so we have roots that run deep in this part of the country. We were married at the Irma J Ranch in 1986, thanks to the kindness of owners Johnny and Irma McNamarra. The connection: Erin had waited on Johnny Mac since she was 5 years old (1960s) in her father's Durango burger joint. When the place came up for sale in 2012, we purchased it with the intent of spending as much time there as possible, and building it into a place for families to gather and play. The construction of the home and 'resurrection' of all the original buildings was completed September 25, 2014, and our daughter was married there two days later. In early June 2016, construction of a 2,200 square foot pavilion was completed. This pavilion is ideally suited for a large family to gather and enjoy the beauty of the ranch and surrounding mountains.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The Irma J Ranch is a unique blend of modern luxury in the 3,700 square foot ranch-style home, and historic beauty in the turn-of-the-century barn, cabin and other buildings. The IrmaJ Ranch is close to Durango Mountain Resort (4 miles), and one mile from the Needles country store and the Old Schoolhouse Restaurant. The barn has been converted to a three-story saloon for entertaining guests during the summer season. It has seasonal hot and cold running water, a 16' bar, foosball table and tons of charm. The cabin is quaint, with high quality finishing touches. A sauna house and seasonal shower house were built in 2014. A new hot tub was added June 2015. An outdoor movie theatre, projecting to a 10' wide screen on the outside barn wall, provides a novel form of entertainment in the summer/fall evening. The pavilion also has a HD projector, screen and state-of-the-art stereo/PA system. During the summer, on-site activities include horse shoes, kick-ball area and fire pit area. Off-site activities include road biking, mountain biking, hiking, four-wheeling, mountain climbing, train rides, golfing, and visits to area attractions like Silverton (26 miles), Durango (24 miles), and Mesa Verde (42 miles).

Beautiful property. Well-managed. Convenient location. Worth the investment.

We absolutely loved staying at the Irma J. It is a beautiful, well-maintained, and welcoming place to stay. It was very spacious and well-appointed. We look forward to staying here again. If I had a dream home in the mountains, it would be very similar to this one. The Authier's and Paul made our stay special. The convenient location was great. We were just a minute or two from Purgatory, and we were still only a short drive from Hermosa and Durango. Irma J is the perfect place to stay to enjoy a magical mountain vacation.

Historical. Beautiful. Perfect.

  • 5 of 5

This was my family's 3rd New Years in Durango and the more I go, the more I seem to fall in love with the town. The Irma J is such a wonderful experience, the historical aspects of the property along with the charming personalities of the owners and caretaker really embodies what Durango is all about. The property is absolutely beautiful! Brad and Erin were so meticulous with the details of this property that you can really feel the love and attention that was put into it. I also love the self-sustainability and eco-friendly aspects of the property. Our family definitely plans to be back!

Only con is not dog friendly but I see how that can makes things complicated.

Great place for a celebration

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated a 30th anniversary at the Irma-J. What a wonderful place. They added a pavilion that can easily accommodate a large group and have games out of the weather. The house is amazing. The kitchen has everything you could need. My buddy and I stayed in the hot tub for hours and we played frisby golf around the beautiful land that the facilities sit on. Across the street you have a view of the rock cliffs and in early October the aspen trees were in glorious color. This is a dream house in a dream location!

Beautifully restored ranch nestled in the San Juan Mountains!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Irma J in early October, and what a special place! The aspen leaves had mostly changed color, and that made better the already spectacular back drop to the place. The layout of the house is simple, with four spacious bedrooms on the main level, but the main area of the house – with the open kitchen/dining room/living room – feels so homey and inviting with ample space for 10 to even 20 people to hang out and visit. The house was great, but the real experience was outdoors, with the barn downstairs that sports a 20’ long bar and flat-screen TV; barn loft with platforms at the large north-south openings for hanging out on or even sleeping on; the shower house with an unobstructed, open-air view of the Hermosa cliffs; the beautifully restored late 1800s cabin; a redwood-cedar lined sauna house; and a very tastefully done pavilion that is open to the west with a spectacular view of the historic barn and Hermosa cliffs. The outdoor, surround-sound movie theater on the north side of the barn, as well as the hot tub and large fire pit behind the house were hits with our group! The 14 acres afforded forested areas to explore south of the buildings. The Irma J Ranch was an exceptional overall experience for our group, no question!

Beautiful, spacious home. Perfect for family get-away!

  • 5 of 5

This home is a perfect vacation spot for family and friends! Very spacious and comfortable. All appliances are state of the art. Located just outside of Durango, this home is central to a variety of fun activities. Explore the towns of Durango or Silverton, horseback ride, hike, or mountain bike! You can easily take a day trip to either Telluride or Mesa Verde. The home is so well kept and clean- would recommend to anyone thinking of visiting the Durango area!

Easy location, beautifully equipped. Loved the grounds.

  • 5 of 5

We came with 2 couples and an infant. The house is spacious with nice fireplaces and plenty of seating for a large group. The barn and other outbuildings are fun to explore. There was plenty to do outside including horseshoes and a fireplace on the front porch! Very convenient to Durango, Silverton, and Ouray. The listing was very accurate regarding location and amenities. Was super clean!

The historic Irma J Ranch is located 4 miles from Durango Mountain Resort and 22 miles from downtown Durango, Colorado. Situated at 8,700' elevation and surrounded by aspen/spruce trees with excellent views of the rugged Hermosa Cliffs, a newly constructed 3,700 square foot, 5 BR 4 Bath luxury home complements the 1880s barn and cabin, and several smaller buildings including a hot tub, sauna and outdoor (seasonal) shower house. Perfect for family get togethers during the summer or fall season, the house is available for stays at a lower winter rate. The cabin has been re-constructed since a 2006 fire, and the livestock barn has been remodeled into a saloon (for personal use only), sporting a 16' long 1920's-era bar and other amenities. Flat-screen televisions have been installed in the house, barn and cabin, controlled with an elan_g! system (barn, cabin and outdoor movie theatre functional during summer/fall season).
