Stanley Reahard is the oldest child of the original home owners: My parents bought this property when my Father was on a 30 day leave during WWII. After the war they built a small bungalow with a side porch. They later added a front porch, and a second floor with a large deck for enjoying the views in the evening. When hurricane Hugo destroyed the house in 1989, they rebuilt the current house which we have all enjoyed for the past 20 years. With 6 bedrooms, a wide front porch and two living rooms it has served our growing family very well.
In 2011-2012 the house has undergone a major renovation, updating the kitchens, the bathrooms, adding a huge deck upstairs.
In spite of all that it maintains its comfortable family feel and is great for multi-generational gatherings--the kind we alway enjoy each year with our own family.
The Owner purchased this house in 1948
My family is from Summerville SC which is 30 miles away. Before the days of air conditioning (I know--it was a long time ago!) lowcountry folks picked up stakes and moved to their beach houses or their mountain houses to escape the suffocating heat of the towns and cities.
We would move down looking like the Okies in my dad's green pickup truck, carrying all of our bedding, towels, beach chairs, the family dog and a nurse for us children.
In those days high tide came so close to the house that my mother could sit on the porch, watch 2 of the children playing the the gully and hear the baby when he woke up from his nap. Today you have to walk the length of a football field to get to the beach but it is certainly worth it!
Time on the beach and watching the ocean are always a great joy. Look for orange tape marking sea turtle nests and find out when they are expected to hatch. It's well worth staying up all night to help the little ones race to the open sea.
For families with young children we are a 5 minute walk from the IOP Recreation center with its tennis courts and play ground and gymnasium. They have many activities for families including Yoga classess for adults.
For 5 years, 3 generations of our family have met for a week each summer at The Blue House. It is a wonderful place for families with children; plenty of beds, enormous screened porch and directly on the beach. Enough room for private space when needed!
The kitchen is well-stocked and nicely appointed. Furnishings are really nice yet easy to keep clean. House is immaculate upon arrival.
Children especially love the 2 outdoor showers--they have been trained to strip off bathing suits and shower---all year I have visions of naked children running upstairs!
We all love the large tables on the porch for all our meals and watching the bunny that lives nearby.
The keyless entry is a huge plus; no keys to keep up after.
This is a real beach house with upscale amenities and we plan on returning every summer.
We had an absolutely wonderful time. My wife and I, with our entire family consisting of two sons and two daughters, along with their spouses or friends spent a week enjoying each other and the beach in July. The house was very comfortable and spacious. The screen porch is enormous, and provided us hours of pleasure. It also was secure enough to let our 2 year old grandaughter roam about freely. The house was very clean and homey, without being too pretentious, The owners are very friendly, and greeted us upon arrival. The waves were great for playing in, and the beach was clean. I will definitely be renting this place again. I have stayed in numerous rentals on the IOP for the last 15 years or so, and this ranks right at the top.
We just stayed at the blue house and we loved it! The layout is perfect for multiple people. There is plenty of room to spread out. The house is well stocked with most everything you need. You are a very short walk through the back yard to the beach. The sunrises are amazing along with the view of the beach. The house is comfortable and roomy. It is a short drive to town. I definitely recommend this house.
We spent a long weekend at The Blue House last week, and it couldn't have been better. Plenty of room for our group (8 adults and 1 child) to spread out. A living room space on each of two floors, with TVs. Upper floor even had a small secondary kitchen. Could have slept more people if we brought more people. We brought our own beach towels and chairs, but everything else we needed was available at the house--kitchen ware plus basic salt/pepper/oil, etc., bedding and towels, key pad on door which meant we did not go crazy looking for the house key. Groceries, liquor, restaurants all within less than 10 minutes on the Isle of Palms. The house was super clean, all in excellent condition. When we were not at the beach, we hung out on the huge screened in porch overlooking the ocean. Had dinner at the huge round table that was perfect size for our crowd. Searched for ghost crabs at night, perfect weather. I love September at the beach. Thanks, Stanley!
We have been taking annual vacations with our children & grandchildren for the past 12 years.
This was our first time to the Isle of Palms & the Blue House. We couldn't have asked for anything more. The house was more than our expectations. First of all the owner, Stanley, is awesome to work with. She answered all of my questions with 1/2 hr. of E-mailing her. The house is beautifully decorated & spacious. We loved the screened in porch which overlooks the ocean & was perfect for all of our meals. There was always a nice breeze. The rooftop deck was perfect for watching the sunsets. The house has every amenity you could possible want. The kitchen is well equipped & all appliances worked well. The 2 refrigerators were great for a family of 11. How nice to walk out of the house & to the beach without having to cross a street. My grandchildren enjoyed playing in the grassy yard.
The large dining table allowed all of us to play games together.
We felt like we had our own private beach & it was very clean.
This house is extremely well maintained & you could tell that the owner takes pride in this home. One of the best vacations we have had.
My wife and I, our daughters and their husbands and our grandchildren (totalling eleven of us) have spent a summer week in this home for the past six years and are returning again next year. That alone should tell you a lot about how much we have enjoyed our time vacationing in this home. The house fits us perfectly in terms of space and accomodations and is very well furnished and maintained. The kitchen is especially well furnished with appliances, utensils, flatware and kitchen tools that far exceed what we have found in most rental homes and condominiums. The owners clearly care about the condition of this home and are making every effort to ensure that it remains in tip-top condition. Vacationers will be hard pressed to find a rental home as well maintained and furnished. Finally, the location is near perfect with an uncrowded beach area and easy access to the bridge to Mount Pleasant and the very extensive “Town Center” shopping area and many excellent restaurants.
Ask any of the locals and they will tell you this is the best surfing location on the Isle of Palms!
