What a fabulous vacation we had at this property! Just as the description stated, we had all the privacy we wanted for our family. We enjoyed the easy access to the Paul Bunyan Bike Trails and could do all the exploring we could want, fed the goats along the paths, loved the beach and water! The dock gave us easy access for our boat and we caught some beautiful bass in the bay. We also really enjoyed the evening fires we could have on the beach.
The lake home was cozy, clean and well-appointed with comfortable duvets in the bedrooms, Wi-Fi and upgraded bathrooms. We spent much of our time on the screened-in back porch with its beautiful and peaceful views. It was very large, private and accommodated our family's needs.
The sitting area in the upstairs bedroom was perfect and inviting for my daughter who loves her privacy and claimed this as her reading space.
What really surprised us is how close and convenient this private location was to shopping, golf, restaurants and the high quality craft beer brewery in the area (Jack Pine Brewery). All in all, this was a very fun week with a little of everything for everyone. We will definitely be back!
This place is great!!! There is a little bit for everyone whether it is biking, fishing, or relaxing. The home itself was very accomadating and homey.
My family had a great time. The house was well-maintained and fit our needs perfectly. We especially liked the screened-in porch and ate our meals there. The listing description was accurate regarding all aspects of the home. The owners were easy to deal with and very accommodating. We would definitely recommend this property to others.
This was the most relaxing place we've ever rented, and we've traveled a lot in the USA and abroad. Between myself (a busy mom who just wants to chill out on vacation), my husband (fisherman/outdoor type), our two teens (who sometimes need space), the middle four (full of energy), and the toddler and baby (for whom we needed a safe place to stay-- doors they can't open, a visible beach, etc.), it's not easy to find a place that will satisfy all of our desires in a vacation. This place was perfect for everyone. A few nice features of the property: 1) Almost NO mosquitos. Not once did we need to use mosquito spray, and we were out until at least 9pm most nights. 2) Spacious- the home is much larger than it looks, and our family of ten had more than enough space. 3) Private- there is a neighbor on one side, but the orientation of the houses is such that you hardly notice when you're inside, on the deck or screen porch, in the huge backyard, or at the beach/dock. 4) Convenient location- at most 15-20 minutes from every major attraction, and less than a minute from a major shopping hub (but you'd never know it). 5) We didn't go biking, but the property appears to be right on the Paul Bunyan trail, and we noticed in the guest book that the people who stayed just before us had accessed the trail from it.
Overall, we had a great time here and hope to come back again, although it seems like the type of place that will book out far in advance. Thank you to the gracious owners for making their beautiful home available!!
Note- I'm recommending this property for those with disabilities because the descent to the beach is so gradual. There are two or three steps to get into the home, but once inside, everything is on one level- although a wheelchair might not fit in the main level bathroom. Also recommending to adventure seekers because of the close proximity to the bike trail and other attractions.
We had a great week on Perch Lake. There are endless things to do right from the cabin. Bike directly to the Paul Bunyan Trail. Golf. Boating. Fishing from the dock for real fish. Forget something? Town is a short walk away. The house is very clean and comfortable. Screened porch was a treat. Large yard for yard games. The sand beach and level entry to the water is excellent. And the owners are a delight to work with. We will be back!
Thank you so much for such lovely accommodations! Your lake home was clean, attractive and inviting. We thoroughly enjoyed the serenity of the surroundings. This is a very private bay that feels very secluded from the world. We would have never suspected major shopping and dining opportunities were less than a mile from the front door! How convenient! My husband loves fishing and enjoyed fishing right from the dock. There are great panfish in the lake! (I would recommend providing a place to clean the fish that are certain to get caught). My favorite moments were sitting on the porch, with my coffee, listening to the loons. Even the occasional train whistle, off in the distance, added to the charm. We are already discussing when to return, which is a huge stamp of approval from my husband. Thank you!

World-class golfing, fishing and boating, biking, snowmobiling, shopping – even bird watching or kayaking – are just some of the reasons people choose to visit the Brainerd Lakes Area. This central Minnesota region, a short two-hour drive north of the Twin Cities, is an outdoor paradise. Throughout the seasons, you will find reasons – such as the festivals, the outdoor experiences, the breathtaking environment — to love it here. Discover why There is More to Explore℠ in the Brainerd Lakes Area, Minnesota’s premier vacation destination.
- Trails in the Brainerd Lakes Area:
The Brainerd Lakes Area is a tourism destination for a variety of reasons – one obvious reason is the extensive variety of great recreational trails. Discover many options for walking, biking on asphalt or mountain bike trails, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and more – and learn why this central Minnesota region is the perfect destination for the outdoor enthusiast. The Brainerd Lakes Area landmark trail is the Paul Bunyan State Trail, which runs more than 100 miles from the trailhead in Baxter to Bemidji. On the Cuyuna Range, you will find the newly opened Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trail System as well as the paved Cuyuna Lakes State Trail. The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway covers more than 50 miles in and near the Whitefish Chain of Lakes through several communities, including Crosslake and Pequot Lakes. Enjoy the beauty by walking, biking, even driving this nationally recognized byway. The Pillsbury State Forest near the Gull Lake Area offers exceptional horseback riding trails. Throughout the Brainerd Lakes Area, you will find a variety of smaller trail systems that offer an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.
- Paul Bunyan State Trail
At 112 miles, the paved Paul Bunyan State Trail is Minnesota’s longest continually paved trail. In the Brainerd Lakes Area, it connects a number of cities, including Brainerd/Baxter, Merrifield, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Jenkins and Pine River. Need to take a break between Point A and Point B? This 30-mile stretch of the heralded trail offers a substantial amount of extracurricular options in the immediate vicinity — not only for food and drink but also for shopping and lodging.
The trail links the communities and businesses the Brainerd Lakes Chamber serves to other trails and visitors all the way north to Lake Bemidji State Park outside Bemidji (see sidebar). Of course, there are a number of naturally occurring “distractions” to keep you from getting to your final destination too quickly: As the map below shows, the path of the Paul Bunyan State Trail takes guests past more than 20 readily accessible freshwater lakes.
Originally opened in 1988, the multi-use trail has grown from 50 miles (between Brainerd/Baxter and Pine River) to stretch to the more than 100 offered today. It is primarily for non-motorized recreation, save for snowmobiles in the winter and electric wheelchairs. On most days, you will encounter a mix of pedestrians, cyclists and in-line skaters.
The Paul Bunyan State Trail is visited by 650,000 people a year. Some of those visitors are geocachers. They flock to the trail because nearly 1,000 geocaches are hidden along the length of the trail. There are so many hidden items, in fact, that the Paul Bunyan State Trail has been deemed a “power trail” .
The continuously paved trail follows the route of a Burlington Northern railroad line from the 1890s that was no longer used after the early 1980s. In 2011, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy group inducted the trail into its Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.
The main trail systems that intersect the Paul Bunyan State Trail are the Heartland Trail and the Blue Ox Trail.
