Are you looking for a true Texas Hill Country get-away? Where you must strain to hear the sound of a car? Where the stars are so bright that you feel like you should reach up and touch one? Come spend a weekend or a week at our Hill Country getaway—Girraween. Named for a national park in Australia, Girraween is an Aboriginal word that means ‘place of flowers’. The 28 acres of surrounding rustic land and a shallow, spring fed creek are wonderful for exploring and bird watching. The house has three bedrooms and two baths, but the best ‘room’ of the house is the Texas sized deck that sports a beautiful view and is perfect for sleeping and stargazing. Near Dripping Springs, Johnson City, and Pedernales Falls Park; close to Austin, Fredericksburg, and 290 Wine Trail.

Nice, Quiet Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We booked this for a quiet getaway, not too far from Austin, and it definitely delivered. We loved the special touches, including handmade soaps, aromatherapy products, and bubbles for our girls to play with. My girls loved discovering all of the amenities listed out with locations in the information booklet; it was like a treasure hunt. No internet allowed us to focus on each other, which included a family hike to the creek on the property, bird and livestock watching (including a painted bunting and bison - on an adjacent property) with the several pairs of binoculars that were provided, and baking in the well-equipped kitchen. The hammock and lounge chairs also helped us to unplug and unwind. We had planned to go to Pedernales Falls State Park, since it is so close, but the creek on the property made us feel like we had our own private oasis, so we didn't venture there. We hope to come back soon!

Texas Hill Country Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family spent two nights at Girraween. I wish we would have planned a day just to hang out on the porch and explore the property! We did walk down to the creek, which is lovely!

Well appointed house, lots of room, great views and oh my goodness...THE STARS!!!!

After busy days exploring the area (5 state parks in 2 days) it felt so awesome to just sit down together and explore the skies!

Exploring nature

  • 5 of 5

All 6 of us had a great time at Girraween. With 2 adults and 4 children ranging in age from 6 - 14, it was a great adventure everyday. This is truly a great getaway from the everyday hustle and bustle of city life. The spring fed creek at the back of the property provided a nice quiet spot to cool down and relax. The location was great because everything that we wanted to do was just a short drive away. We will definitely be back to enjoy the beauties of the property again.

Great mini-moon

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of spending two days after our wedding at Girraween, and we could not have asked for a better place to relax and recuperate. We had everything we needed and it was such a low stress trip. We ate all our meals on the beautiful deck overlooking the hill country, hiked at Pedernales falls, took full advantage of the grill, and left feeling rejuvenated and ready to face married life. Thanks for everything, Ann! We would love to come back sometime!

beautiful scenery, stellar arrangements, wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Girraween with my partner in April. Girraween is close enough to Austin to enjoy the best of both worlds - city life and the hill country. Ann made sure our Spring break stay was enjoyable, providing excellent communication, informed advice regarding nearby attractions and even treats. The place was spacious, clean and well stocked. The property includes a beautiful rock formation that rests on a creek. I'm looking forward to returning in the near future.

dream stay at Girraween

  • 5 of 5

My partner and i stayed at Girraween for three nights this April. I could not have imagined a better place to stay - the place is incredibly peaceful, there is so much room to explore, and it is the perfect place for some time outside of the city and R&R. Ann is extremely thoughtful about making her guests feel right at home - there was food in the fridge, the kitchen was well-stocked, there are games and books and much more to use in the house or out wandering on the huge property. Highly recommend.

Why Ann Hillis chose Johnson City

David and Ann bought Girraween in the 1990s to assure that their children had a place to roam and discover nature. It is a secluded and peaceful place with wonderful views and great stargazing. Close to all Hill Country attractions, it is a beautiful retreat for couples, families, book groups, and friends.

What makes this house unique

Girraween gives you a place to be quiet, enjoy nature, watch wildlife, star gaze, and be away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Close enough to civilization (45 minutes to Austin or Fredericksburg), but far enough away to forget all your worries.
