About Karen Haskins

Mark is an acupuncturist and writer and I am an artist and mother of two. We enjoy hiking, walking on the beach and foreign films. Our children are 14 yr old Gabriel who studies Kung Fu with his Dad and is a computer enthusiast. Our 8 yr old daughter Mikaela loves to make new friends, care for her pets, and do anything active.

Mark and I both grew up in San Diego County, and feel lucky we are able to raise our family in this beautiful enriching area.

Karen Haskins purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Karen Haskins chose San Diego County

Mark and I found this this property shortly after we were married. We have enjoyed remodeling it to our tastes and turning the land into a lush garden. We love the fresh ocean breezes from the ocean, and the privacy our 1/2 acre affords us. We are happy to see our children being active outdoors for a healthy balance in this age of technology.

What makes this cottage unique

What made us fall in love with our home was the feeling of being surrounded by nature, while still being centrally located. It was originally built by an Italian who planted date palms, olive trees and grew his own grapes to make wine. He even built a wood- fired outdoor pizza oven, which was crumbling when we bought the house and had to be taken down. We remodeled the studio to be a home for my Father for three years toward the end of his life, and have enjoyed renting it out the past few years. We have only had good experiences renting, and enjoy meeting new people and making them feel welcome.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were visiting Encinitas for our anniversary. This was a great place to stay with plenty of room for the both of us; so much better than a hotel! We could cook meals as we pleased and everything you may need is within minutes. Karen was a great host and even though they live on site (next door) we had plenty of privacy.

Nice quiet and charming little guest home. The yard is really nice for dogs and adults.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the patio and the privacy.

Landlord was really nice and accommodating.

Really convenient to all the locations we needed.

The bed was a little soft for my liking but it wasn't a deal breaker. We would definitely come back.

Very nice guest house with great deck & yard!

  • 5 of 5

This was a very clean & comfortable guest house in a quiet neighborhood in Encinitas. While the indoor space is on the small side, the private deck & yard really add to the overall available space, especially if you're travelling with a pet or two. Karen was super nice - she helped get us settled in upon arrival, and after that I think we only saw her or her family 1 or 2 other times during a 5-night stay, so the privacy factor was excellent. And location is quite good - only a 5 minute drive to shops, restaurants, & the beach. Overall = loved it!

Tropical & Cozy Bungalow

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. This bungalow was very clean and spacious inside (especially the kitchen!), and perfect for my husband and I and our two dogs. It is in the tuck surrounded by beautiful, tropical vegetation and nice neighborhood streets to take a walk. The backyard is beautiful, fenced and was perfect for our dogs, and we loved that we had a view to the ocean! Our dogs loved it! It is located very close to the beach and in the heart of Encinitas which is a wonderful beach community. The owner, Karen, was very hospitable, and checked in with us to see, if we needed anything. I highly recommend this vacation rental, and would book again in a heartbeat! A great place and very reasonably priced!

Perfect Private Getaway Location

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our little vacation. The cottage was perfect for the two of us with everything you could possibly need, along with the most gracious hosts. We didn't have the typical San Diego weather with the cold and rain which didn't allow us to make use of the backyard but even in the cold and rain it was beautiful. I am already requested a redo on this vacation and know where I want to stay again.
