About Karen Haskins

Mark is an acupuncturist and writer and I am an artist and mother of two. We enjoy hiking, walking on the beach and foreign films. Our children are 14 yr old Gabriel who studies Kung Fu with his Dad and is a computer enthusiast. Our 8 yr old daughter Mikaela loves to make new friends, care for her pets, and do anything active.

Mark and I both grew up in San Diego County, and feel lucky we are able to raise our family in this beautiful enriching area.

Karen Haskins purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Karen Haskins chose San Diego County

Mark and I found this this property shortly after we were married. We have enjoyed remodeling it to our tastes and turning the land into a lush garden. We love the fresh ocean breezes from the ocean, and the privacy our 1/2 acre affords us. We are happy to see our children being active outdoors for a healthy balance in this age of technology.

What makes this cottage unique

What made us fall in love with our home was the feeling of being surrounded by nature, while still being centrally located. It was originally built by an Italian who planted date palms, olive trees and grew his own grapes to make wine. He even built a wood- fired outdoor pizza oven, which was crumbling when we bought the house and had to be taken down. We remodeled the studio to be a home for my Father for three years toward the end of his life, and have enjoyed renting it out the past few years. We have only had good experiences renting, and enjoy meeting new people and making them feel welcome.

We had a lovely time - the studio is spacious and well kept and Karen was a great host that is there if you need anything. We had wifi and all needed amentities inside and there is a beautiful deck and backyard outside. The rental is a few minute drive away from Main Street Encinitas and Moonlight beach. We would love to stay again!

We were moving to San Diego and needed a temporary place for a week. The House had everything we needed. Karen was always very helpful and so nice to us. We were not familiar with San Diego, and Encinitas is a really nice city to visit.

Considering the cost, I definitely recommend this rental.

Great Stay!

Everything was as we expected, and enjoy the great weather in their cute garden. Even humming bards and rabbits were saying hello to us.

Strongly recommend this property to get away from city and enjoy California weather.

We had a wonderful stay in Encinitas. Karen went out of her way to make sure my dogs were safe. The space is clean and yard spacious. Thank you again Karen for your help with our furry girl.

Delightful property, well-provisioned, extremely comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect respite for 1 or 2 people. Owner has thought of everything. The cottage was spotless, extremely comfortable, with more amenities (beach towels, chiminea, deck and indoor dining options) than I could truly take advantage of with only a 2-3 night stay. Access to fabulous downtown Encinitas is doable by long hike, great groceries at the US 1 Whole Foods or savor fabulous dining options near beach or even delivered to the door. I had no problem getting everywhere via walking or UBER. Even though owner lives on site, the cottage has its own drive and entrance, fenced in back yard and lush vegetation...extremely private and restful.

Karen was thoroughly accessible through messaging before and during the stay. Just a lovely hostess and home!
