About Karen Haskins

Mark is an acupuncturist and writer and I am an artist and mother of two. We enjoy hiking, walking on the beach and foreign films. Our children are 14 yr old Gabriel who studies Kung Fu with his Dad and is a computer enthusiast. Our 8 yr old daughter Mikaela loves to make new friends, care for her pets, and do anything active.

Mark and I both grew up in San Diego County, and feel lucky we are able to raise our family in this beautiful enriching area.

Karen Haskins purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Karen Haskins chose San Diego County

Mark and I found this this property shortly after we were married. We have enjoyed remodeling it to our tastes and turning the land into a lush garden. We love the fresh ocean breezes from the ocean, and the privacy our 1/2 acre affords us. We are happy to see our children being active outdoors for a healthy balance in this age of technology.

What makes this cottage unique

What made us fall in love with our home was the feeling of being surrounded by nature, while still being centrally located. It was originally built by an Italian who planted date palms, olive trees and grew his own grapes to make wine. He even built a wood- fired outdoor pizza oven, which was crumbling when we bought the house and had to be taken down. We remodeled the studio to be a home for my Father for three years toward the end of his life, and have enjoyed renting it out the past few years. We have only had good experiences renting, and enjoy meeting new people and making them feel welcome.

Tropical ambience and privacy.

  • 5 of 5

Karen's cottage is tucked away with a private deck/patio and has a private, tropical ambience. Karen was very friendly and responsive through the texting arrangements. The location is a 10 minute drive to the center of Encinitas and Swami's Beach.

Peaceful oasis and convenient to all

  • 5 of 5

I loved staying at Karen's guest house. It's tucked away in a secluded location even though it's in a neighborhood. Parking is right outside the door for easy access. The property is very lush and private. Loved the deck with the ocean view for morning coffee and evening meals that you can cook in full kitchen. The location is centrally located with great access to all the beaches, shopping, and restaurants. Karen is very accessible for any needs and greeted me when I arrived.

Great beach vacation house!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely guest house in a charming town. The house is well decorated, very clean, and equipped with everything you need! It has a spacious kitchen, a beautiful bathroom, a comfortable bed, and lots of closet space! The deck looks out onto a lush, tropical, fenced in yard and you get a sliver size view of the ocean to enjoy those gorgeous sunsets! It has plenty of windows and doors to let in the wonderful ocean breeze. There is so much to do and see in the area and it's close to everything, yet far enough away from the crowds. In just a 5 minute car ride you are at the beach or downtown. My dog and I enjoyed daily trips to the amazing town dog park just 5 minutes away and Del Mar Dog Beach just 15 minutes away!

The hosts live directly next door and are available anytime, yet give you all the privacy you want. Karen is a kind and friendly host. I enjoyed my stay very much and I wouldn't hesitate to plan another trip back here again!

Peaceful Tropical Guest House

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this spacious, private, clean, and quiet guest house. The back deck and back yard provide a lovely tropical ambiance. It was like waking up in Bali (but without any rooster noise!). The bed was softer than we like, but we were still happy there. Instructions were clear, and everything worked. We look forward to staying again next year.
