About George Schmidt
I moved to Durango right out of high school in 1991. I waited tables at a restaurant for three months before deciding I needed to do more. I went to college, and then lived and worked in NYC for twenty years before finally making it back to Durango in 2010. I'm an Artist, and a builder, and the Stonehouse gave me the opportunity to bring these two skills together. A gut renovation that I began in 2010 left the historic vibe of the building intact, while allowing me to totally update all the mechanical systems. I love mountain biking on the trails around town, hiking, backpacking, rafting, and exploring the deserts and mountains with my partner Amber Johnson, a Durango Native (that rare breed!) that i'm lucky enough to share my adventures with.
George Schmidt purchased this Apartment in 2010
Why George Schmidt chose Durango
The Stonehouse Studio is a unique downtown property that is super close to Main Street, but provides a remarkable feeling of seclusion, even in the heart of busy downtown Durango. A Durango landmark, it was built in the 1890's making it one of the oldest buildings in town. After completion of a major renovation in 2010-12, I completely updated all the systems of the building while retaining the charming vibe of the nineteenth century stone building. There is a large private backyard, which is tucked away behind a fence and deck, but that offers views of the large trees in Buckley Park, right across the street. From the Stonehouse Studio you can walk anywhere you might want to go in downtown Durango. All the best restaurants and shops, galleries, bars and grocery stores are just minutes away on foot. All of the Mountain Biking Trailheads are easily accessed from downtown, and are there are literally hundreds of miles of trails you can access directly from the driveway in just a few minutes ride.

Absolutely wonderful! Loved it!
Unique and stylish space above old stone building, right in the heart of historic downtown Durango. Light and bright and decorated with owners original artwork. Very clean and owner had fresh flowers and a personal note waiting on the table when we got there. Owner has supplied the space with numerous books and other reading material, much is about local history or hikes in the area. Great shower with lots of pressure and very comfortable bed. This was truly a great place to stay and I will stay here again if I’m ever in Durango.
Would not consider staying anywhere else.
I did not forget to review as you suggested. In short it was great.
Fourth time staying here- it’s our favorite!
We love staying in this charming studio every time we head to Durango. It’s so special and has the best location, walking distance to downtown!
Perfect location within walking distance to everything downtown, extremely clean.
Can’t say enough about the location, cleanliness, decor, attention to details, and concern for sustainability. George left fresh flowers, wine, and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay in Durango.
Great location, appointed with care. You will not want to leave!
This was a great rental. Very warm and comfortable home. George and Amber were awesome to work with and had lots of insider information on Durango eats and drinks. Easy walk to all downtown shops and restaurants. We will stay here again for sure. Thank you, George and Amber for a great experience.
