About George Schmidt

I moved to Durango right out of high school in 1991. I waited tables at a restaurant for three months before deciding I needed to do more. I went to college, and then lived and worked in NYC for twenty years before finally making it back to Durango in 2010.

I'm an Artist, and a builder, and the Stonehouse gave me the opportunity to bring these two skills together. A gut renovation that I began in 2010 left the historic vibe of the building intact, while allowing me to totally update all the mechanical systems. I love mountain biking on the trails around town, hiking, backpacking, rafting, and exploring the deserts and mountains with my partner Amber Johnson, a Durango Native (that rare breed!) that i'm lucky enough to share my adventures with.

George Schmidt purchased this apartment in 2010

Why George Schmidt chose Southwest

The Stonehouse Studio is a unique downtown property that is super close to Main Street, but provides a remarkable feeling of seclusion, even in the heart of busy downtown Durango. A Durango landmark, it was built in the 1890's making it one of the oldest buildings in town. After completion of a major renovation in 2010-12, I completely updated all the systems of the building while retaining the charming vibe of the nineteenth century stone building. There is a large private backyard, which is tucked away behind a fence and deck, but that offers views of the large trees in Buckley Park, right across the street. From the Stonehouse Studio you can walk anywhere you might want to go in downtown Durango. All the best restaurants and shops, galleries, bars and grocery stores are just minutes away on foot. All of the Mountain Biking Trailheads are easily accessed from downtown, and are there are literally hundreds of miles of trails you can access directly from the driveway in just a few minutes ride.

Awesome property!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here! The place is beautifully designed and decorated, it was perfectly clean when we arrived, and the proximity to downtown shops and restaurants can't be beat. We will definitely be staying here when we make it back to Durango, and will be recommending this place to all of our friends. Thanks for the great weekend George!

Amazing Stonehouse Durango

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfully amazing and unique home base in downtown Durango. Creative interior and design offers a quaint and comfortable setting to explore Durango and the surrounding areas. The outdoor space offers nice intimate space for relaxation and social gathering. The location, across from a beautiful park is perfect for access to downtown but yet quiet with neighborhood feel. After an active day exploring the beautiful mountains the Stonehouse will invite you back for an evening of relaxation. As good as it gets!!!

The Stonehouse Studio is conveniently located right in the heart of downtown Durango. It is one half block off of Main Avenue. Durango is a city of 18,000 that definitely punches above its weight. Main Avenue is lined with cafes, boutiques, bars, and restaurants offering a wide range of shopping, dining and entertainment options. All Durango has to offer is within easy walking distance of the Stonehouse Studio. Nestled in the Animas River Valley, and surrounded by the 2,936 square mile San Juan National Forest, the city of Durango offers an exceptional opportunity to enjoy everything that this historic, naturally beautiful and culturally vibrant corner of southwest Colorado has to offer. Its no secret that this part of southwest Colorado offers some of the most incredible outdoor recreation opportunities in the country. Mountain Biking, Skiing, Hiking, Fishing, Rafting or simply enjoying the limitless depth of the blue sky on a cool summer evening at 6,500ft, the area is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. A mountain biking destination for decades, Durango offers an extensive network of trails that wind throughout the hills surrounding town. From the central location at the Stonehouse Studio its a quick ride to challenging single track in Horse Gulch, Overend Mountain Park, and the Twin Buttes trail networks. As the terminus of the Colorado Trail, Durango is an excellent place for hikers, mountain bikers, and backpackers to access the high country. Many peaks in the southern San Juan and La Plata mountains are easily ascended as day hikes using Durango as your base camp. Durango is also home to the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway. Durango Mountain Resort, 20 miles north of Durango, and roughly half an hour from the Stonehouse Studio has 1,200 acres of skiable terrain. Durango-La Plata county airport has daily flights connecting the region to Denver, Dallas, and Phoenix. Nearby to the west, and within reach for a day trip the visitor will find Mesa Verde National Park, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Yucca House National Monument, and Hovenweep National Monument. These parks and monuments preserve and offer access to thousands of acres of wilderness and hundreds of ancient native american cliff dwellings and sites.
