Gold Hill is a locally owned and operated seasonal rental home adjacent to historic Rutherfordton, NC in a friendly neighborhood. Rutherfordton was founded in 1787 and has a rich history. In the 1830s and 1840s, The mint, founded by Christopher Bechtler, Sr. in 1831, is credited with producing the nation’s first $1 gold coin. The Bechtler Mint Site is less than a mile from the home and the museum is just off Main St. in Rutherfordton. The town is home to the only remaining cluster of antebellum houses and public structures in the southern foothills of North Carolina. About Lori and Ben Byers

Ben and Lori are natives of the area and great local guides for our beautiful "neck of the woods." Ben holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and has worked to save and restore log cabins and Lori has an M.Ed. in English Education, with a background in both teaching and tutoring and is a handmade soap maker. We are animal and nature lovers and look forward to sharing our home with you.

Lori and Ben Byers purchased this house in 2007

Why Lori and Ben Byers chose Blue Ridge Mountains

Lori's family owned land in this community for 100 years, the property is Lori's childhood home. When her great grandparents found the ancestral home place adjacent on Thompson, they came in a horse and buggy along a primitive dirt road. Our home was passed down through the generations and we are surrounded by family homes and land.

What makes this house unique

The home is located close to town (but not in town) and our area is a hub to jump off to horse events at the Tryon Equestrian Center, the beauty of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, home of Dirty Dancing and Last of the Mohicans films. There are also local sporting events such as high school baseball and football. The Owls Forest City baseball games are just a few miles away. Natural beauty surrounds the area, including Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, South Mountains, Tryon, Marion, and more. Hiking and biking on the Rails to Trails is less than a mile away. The home also features beautiful sunsets over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mary stayed at Gold Hill Inn Rutherfordton in late October and she was absolutely a delight to have. She treated our home with the utmost respect and cleanliness and was a charm to meet during the stay. I would highly recommend her at any VRBO booking! Please come back and see us anytime, Mary. All best, Lori and Ben

Much Needed Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Lori is the most gracious host I have ever meet. The house is just like the pictures. We had a WONDERFUL stay and will be back. Beds were like sleeping on clouds. Everything you need is close by. People were friendly and the mountain views from the back yard and kitchen are GREAT. Can't thank Lori enough, she went above and beyond to accommodate any need we expressed. See you soon....

Spacious and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

2 days was not nearly enough! I wish I could've stayed a week! The cabin was perfect with a large living room area. Everything you need for cooking and plenty of hot water! Right near green river adventures which I highly recommend for a summer adventure! Also Big Bradley falls is an amazing hike near green river only 30 min away! Make sure you bring your bathing suit! The fact that they allow pets without extra charges is literally the best. View from the kitchen window is mesmerizing... beautiful landscape! Huge grassy field, didn't see any deer but I'm sure they pass through there all the time. Btw, Lori, your rosemary plants on the side of the house are the most impressive I've ever seen! I'll be back!

Very home like, comfortable and lots of room.

  • 5 of 5

I looked forward to returning at the end of each day to this wonderful home. We did breakfast and dinner here. Grilled burgers on the propane grill or we could have used the charcoal grill. I do a lot of traveling for work so being here on a little visit, we enjoyed the feeling of being at home. Highly recommend.

the house is beautiful and very clean and cozy

  • 5 of 5

My fiance' and I had a wonderful time at this location. We were amazed by the decor and we weren't to far away from lake lure or our horse riding trail. We enjoyed every moment we spent there at the house. If anyone ever wants a really nice place to stay this would definately be my recomendation. Hope to come back again next year and bring the whole family.

Cozy and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

The house is full of little treasures that are fun to look at and many books that are interesting and lots of books on area attractions and happenings. The house is very clean and comfortable. Lori even sent a text to make sure everything was going well during our stay. She remembers the little things such as leaving a light on for our arrival. This house was perfect for our needs and was convenient to all the surrounding towns we wanted to visit. I would highly recommend this place if you are visiting the area.
