The town is home to the only remaining cluster of antebellum houses and public structures in the southern foothills of North Carolina. About Lori and Ben Byers

Ben and Lori are natives of the area and know the area well. We love our beautiful "neck of the woods." Ben holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and has worked to save and restore log cabins and Lori has an M.Ed. in English Education, with a background in both teaching and tutoring, creative writing, and IT design. We are animal and nature lovers and look forward to sharing our home with you.

Lori and Ben Byers purchased this house in 2007

Why Lori and Ben Byers chose Blue Ridge Mountains

Lori's family owned land in this community for 100 years, the property is Lori's childhood home. When her great grandparents found the ancestral home place adjacent on Thompson, they came in a horse and buggy along a primitive dirt road. Our home was passed down through the generations and we are surrounded by family and friends' homes and land.

What makes this house unique

The home is located close to town (but not in town) and our area is a hub to jump off to horse events at the Tryon Equestrian Center, the beauty of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, home of Dirty Dancing and Last of the Mohicans films. There are also local sporting events such as high school baseball and football. The Owls Forest City baseball games are just a few miles away. Natural beauty surrounds the area, including Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, South Mountains, Tryon, Marion, and more. Hiking and biking on the Rails to Trails is less than a mile away. The home also features beautiful sunsets over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mary stayed at Gold Hill Inn Rutherfordton in late October and she was absolutely a delight to have. She treated our home with the utmost respect and cleanliness and was a charm to meet during the stay. I would highly recommend her at any VRBO booking! Please come back and see us anytime, Mary. All best, Lori and Ben

Much Needed Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Lori is the most gracious host I have ever meet. The house is just like the pictures. We had a WONDERFUL stay and will be back. Beds were like sleeping on clouds. Everything you need is close by. People were friendly and the mountain views from the back yard and kitchen are GREAT. Can't thank Lori enough, she went above and beyond to accommodate any need we expressed. See you soon....

Loved it!!

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic time we had at Gold Hill this past week. This was my second visit to Gold Hill and I dare say it will not be the last. Everything about this warm and well-appointed home made our stay a terrific experience. Lori could not be a more gracious and accommodating hostess. There is so much beauty in this part of our great country and Gold Hill is most definitely a part of this beauty. The view from the kitchen is spectacular complete with a family of deer early in the morning. Everything about this special place feels like a home away from home which is what has made my visit here to spend precious time with my sister and her family very pleasant. Surely this is God's country. I literally hated pulling out of the driveway to travel back to Orlando. Looking so forward to my next visit to Gold Hill and having coffee with Lori! I highly recommend this lovely home.

A comfortable place to stay

  • 5 of 5

this was a great place to stay, for humans and pets alike. the place is decorated so nice and everything you could need is there. Just bring your toothbrush and clothes. the real thing to focus on is how wonderfully clean it is. A true joy, especially for a place that allows pets. We had a great stay!!!! thank you!!!

Very homey

  • 5 of 5

Loved Lori and Ben's place.....it was Lori's childhood home. All walls were covered with artwork. It felt like a museum but in a good, homey kind of way. Kitchen was up-to-date but rest of house had a 50s kind of feel, which I enjoyed. House has a great view of distant mountains with comfortable, large yard, front and back. It sits on a 2-lane country road which is not heavily traveled but is high-speed. Would put all dogs and small kids on leashes! There were no negatives at all and communications with Lori were pleasant and she was quick to respond. I would go again. Value was great.

Great Place to stay. The air conditioners were noisy, but we just turned them down during the night. The washer and dryer came in handy, since we got caught in the rain a couple of times. There was a nice mountain view from the kitchen window, we even saw a couple of deer. There were lots of information about the area.
