About LAURIE RISKIN
My husband Bill and I are the former founders, directors and educators of a private high school in Bellingham. Our school's experiential curriculum had a strong emphasis in the arts and environmental sciences. Now that we are retired, we are enjoying our time at our beautiful country home and with the creative supportive people that are our community. We are artists; we are readers; we love music, dancing, and a great meal!
LAURIE RISKIN purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1985
Why LAURIE RISKIN chose Deming
The North Fork of the Nooksack River runs around 150 yards behind our home. Enjoy walking down our country road to one of the beautiful trails to the river. Our County Parks Dept and the Whatcom Land Trust preserve this area for wild life such as eagles, salmon, elk, and deer, and protects it from future development. Bring your bike for enjoyable rides.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Our community is enriched by wonderful and talented neighbors, a community hall that provides space for poetry readings, dance and music events and the best potluck meals! We have an awesome library, great restaurants nearby and a popular craft brewery. Best of all is the beautiful natural environment for you to enjoy appreciate and explore!

Adorable cabin close to hiking, skiing
This place was just perfect for a romantic weekend getaway for two. The cabin is beautifully decorated and everything has been thought of. A convenience store is nearby if you forgot to bring anything and there are plenty of delicious dining options. We were lucky enough to see bald eagles every day of our trip. Do note that there is no microwave or oven but there is a toaster oven and range if you’d like to cook. A grill is also mentioned in the handy guidebook though we didn’t use it. We found that we had no issues with preparing food. The bed was comfortable, the couch was cozy and I wanted to move in as soon as I walked through the front door. I can’t wait to go back.
Tracey and her partner were wonderful guests.
They were gracious and kind.. and returned the space perfectly cleaned and in order as when they arrived.
I welcome them back anytime!
So beautiful and relaxing
My boyfriend and I stayed in this cabin for a mini escape from reality and it was amazing . The interior is beautifully decorated and peaceful. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio drinking wine and listening to music and having the bbq was amazing we used it both nights for dinner . We will definitely be returning we love it
Very clean and well furnished. Lovely light, nice bathroom, good floor plan.
Laurie is a charming and thoughtful host. The location is ideal for exploring the beautiful Mt. Baker area. We would not hesitate to come again!
I thoroughly enjoyed hosting Gene and her family.
They are kind and thoughtful and returned the guesthouse well-cleaned and in order. I welcome them back anytime!
It was a perfect cabin for our needs. Much better value than a motel, i would recommend
Charming and cozy
Laurie is such a hospitable host that left nothing wanting. She went as far as to provide organic coffee and tea with cream in the fridge and welcomed us with open arms. Next chance I get I wouldn't love to return knowing I will have a relaxed stay with all the comforts of home and more!
Greetings Hannah.. thank you so much for your thoughtful review and most of all, for your kindness during my difficult time. Your beautiful hydrangea look lovely in my home. I welcome you back anytime. Feel free to give me a call to make arrangements.
Take care.. all my best,
Loved this guest house in the country
I grew up in the country and I miss it. It was such a treat to stay in Laurie’s guest house in the country. It is QUIET. Also it is DARK and you can really see the night sky. The stars were brilliant. We LOVED staying in this place.
Here is my list of “GREATS” for this place:
• Location was fantastic for exploring the Mt Baker area.
• There are lots of windows and lots of lights/lamps. You can see what you are doing in the kitchen and you can read in any chair or in bed. Also lots of electrical outlets.
• The shower is huge, beautiful, has great water pressure and a slidebar to set the height of the shower head anywhere that you prefer.
• LAUNDRY—this is one thing I look for because we travel for two weeks at a time. My husband fell in a stream while we were hiking. We were able to put his muddy hiking gear in the laundry as soon as we got to the guest house and it was ready to go for the next day. Having laundry facilities is SO HANDY in so many ways.
• Good toilet paper. Sounds insignificant until you stay somewhere that has cheap TP.
• Tall toilet—also insignificant unless you are used to the taller ones.
• A bonus to have Netflix available.
Here are a few things to note that could be better:
• The “easy chair” is really uncomfortable.
• There is no microwave so don’t plan on having microwave popcorn while there! It was a little inconvenient but certainly not a hardship. Laurie said she is planning to install a small oven and microwave unit so that will make the place even better.
• There is no clock in the house. It would be convenient to have a small electric clock (because battery-operated clocks make noise) in the bedroom and one in the front room.
We love our peaceful river valley. Neighbors are environmentally conscious.. organic gardeners and farmers surround our home. Enjoy garden views of the foothills, river trails, winter eagles & salmon, summer swimming & tubing in fresh river water, skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and hiking Mt Baker. Bring your bike for enjoyable rides. We provide maps for hiking trails nearby. We are just a few minutes off the road to Mt Baker.
If you're looking for a great meal.. Refugio Country Cuisine is only 2 minutes away. Enjoy a delicious gourmet meal for reasonable prices: breakfast, pastries, lunch, dinner, fresh pie or a glass of wine. Live music happens many Friday or Saturday nights. Dine outdoors on the patio when the weather is nice. Or choose to bring one of Refugio's frozen meat or veggie pies back to the guest house for home dining.
If you're wanting a fantastic pizza and a local favorite craft beer the North Fork Brewery is 5 minutes away. Order take out or enjoy one of their many popular craft brews with your dinner there.
Everybody's Store is also nearby. The store is packed with everything you might want... wines, cheeses, dried sausages, smoked salmon, beers, chocolates, snacks, home made sandwiches, organic fruits and veggies, fresh breads, local organic ice cream, gifts, plus much much more!
Down the road from there, you'll find The Acme Diner. They serve great omelets for breakfast, fantastic burgers, BBQ, salads w local greens, pies and the famous Acme Ice Cream.
If you're looking for herb to smoke or edibles to eat, stop by the new Green Spot located on Mt Baker Hwy across from the IGA and next door to Extreme Bean Coffee Stop.
