World War II brought back the importance and prominence of this 24 acre island. This strategic point in Casco Bay proved an essential element to the safety of the entire Atlantic Fleet that was birthed there. Family vacation that turned into a wedding
We had originally reserved the large house on the island for a family vacation including our children and grandchildren. My son and his fiancé decided that it was a great opportunity for them to get married. At that point we reserved the other two houses on the island for her family and friends. Having this lovely island as a playground for a large group of adults and children was paradise! We all remarked that being on the island with the kids was like an old-fashioned summer. Lots of baseball playing on the wonderful open field, lots of games and cards, hardly any technology. The island is beautiful, the big house is well-designed for a group and quite attractive. The kids room with six beds and plenty of space was perfect. There are four other bedrooms for adults. We were short one bedroom until we reserved the other houses, so it worked out beautifully.
Our requests for anything from a microwave to more paper towels were always met with smiling helpfulness by caretakers Eban and Biz. They seemed to pop up offering assistance the minute we had a question. Elishia, took care of our every need, arranged for every detail of the wedding to be perfect, and created exquisite floral arrangements.
It was a dream week that fulfilled every wish we could have had for happy family time and a romantic and meaningful wedding. Every one in our family of ten adults, five children from twenty months to eight years old, and a dog, had a wonderful week.
Perfect and the Best Weekend of Our Lives
My two sisters and I had the privilege of staying at this amazing House Island property with our families. We took our parents here, as a surprise, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. To quote my parents, "It was perfect and the best weekend of our lives." It's been almost 3 weeks since we’ve been on House Island and a day hasn’t gone by that I haven't thought about how wonderful our time was on the island.
The awesome weekend started off with quick and easy water taxi rides over to the island (we love Catherine!). Our most memorable memories are, and there are lots, waking up early and watching the sunrise, jumping off the docks, searching for sea glass on the wonderful beaches, exploring the forts, making s'mores by the fire, kayaking around the island, playing crochet in the huge grass yard, swinging in the hammocks, eating outside with our entire family of 14 while watching the sunset and just plain relaxing and enjoying our family time. What made it even more perfect, was not only the wonderful property and weather we had, but Gene, the care taker, he was fantastic. He was there for us for any need or special request we had. Want lobster? No problem, he arranged for lobster to be delivered to our dock! Want to go to Peaks Island for ice cream? No problem, we'll get you over there. He truly made our stay memorable.
This was truly a special family vacation that we will all remember and talk about for the rest of our lives.
