The first European's to settle in what is now known as the state of Maine landed on House Island in 1621. Fort Scamell was built during the War of 1812 and then again used during the Civil War. In the early 1900s House Island was known as the "Ellis Island of the North." Thousands of immigrants were processed on this island before being allowed to enter the country. World War II brought back the importance and prominence of this 24 acre island.This strategic point in Casco Bay proved an essential element to the safety of the entire Atlantic Fleet that was birthed there. Large iron rods embedded in the island are still visible today as these rods were the tie in points for groups of submarine nets that kept the German submarines out of the north Atlantic Fleet birthing areas.
Cappy’s Lodge, beautifully restored to host two (2) king master bedrooms (one wheelchair accessible) with private baths, large gathering kitchen, dining for fourteen people, game table, conversation corner, all part of the living room with a fireplace and large screen tv!
Upstairs are two (2) more private queen bedrooms and baths, and a bunk room with 6 twin beds and room for sleeping bags…..and there own private bath.
The tall ceilings and large windows gives you full scenic views from every room. And off the front entrance is a large patio for outdoor dining, parties, meetings, receptions easily accommodating 50 people . And grassy areas right down to the water!
