One Mile From The Haleakala National Park, Pools Of Oheo, The Seven Pools
This Hana cottage is tucked away on a lush hillside near Haleakala National Park.
Stay in this, fully equipped, one-bedroom Maui home. It's one of the most beautiful locations Hana has to offer. Perfect for your Maui vacation, honeymoon, special birthday, or just a relaxing retreat.
Guests who come to Anya's house aren't just taking a journey in miles, they're stepping back in time. The retreat was shaped by the traditions of Old Hawaii, when days were lazy and carefree, and nights were for "talking story" and making romance. Here you are in the heart of nature: turn right out the front door to hike through one of America's last rain forests; turn left and take a cool dip in a natural pool fed by waterfalls. In the early morning and at twilight, walk along a deserted country lane bordering the ocean, where the only sounds are singing birds and lapping waves. In winter, watch the whales dance!

From Bliss to Bootcamp
We stayed here our last 2 nights on Maui. We spent the previous 3 nights at another VRBO cottage, and had a delightful time – beautiful setting, cool breeze, clean, comfortable and great customer service. They will receive 5 stars. We expected the same at Anya’s house. We liked the rustic architectural details and wrap-around porch. The landscape is full of fruit trees, birds, and has a magnificent view of the ocean. Everyone on VRBO and in the guestbook wrote this was a perfect setting to relax. The inside is nice and well stocked, with a cozy bed, but the sofa and futon are worn and the house has a musty smell. The only tub/shower is on the deck, wide open, but we were assured of our privacy so we embraced it. At Anya’s request we called to let her know of our arrival. She was kind and gave us helpful hints.
The day of our departure we were tired from all our exploring, so we intended to take it slow and enjoy our last day. All this changed when the phone rang at 8AM. We were so relaxed we did not answer. If an emergency, the phone would ring again. It didn’t so we enjoyed our coffee admiring the ocean. The phone rang again at 9. It was Anya saying she thought we left when we did not answer at 8 and she was at the house to work on the water tank and mow the lawn. When I explained we were taking our time thus missing the first phone call, she didn’t offer to return later, but instead asked if we had taken our showers yet. When I replied we had not, she asked could we be showered and dressed in 30 minutes while she ran an errand. (What is this, bootcamp?) I was so caught off guard that in my kindness I agreed. My husband reacted right away and called her back having to leave a message explaining we had a long travel day ahead of us and we’d very much appreciate our own time here until we checked out. We spent good money to come here for peace and quiet. Why the urgency and no previous notice? At 9:45 she was at our door, saying she was embarrassed, but no apology. When my husband confirmed check out not til 11 asking again if she could hold off on maintenance, her reply was, “I drove 45 minutes here and that would mean I would have to sit in my truck so that’s not going to work.” She seemed oblivious as to how much of an inconvenience this was to us – her paying customers. Our last day (of 2) was full of unnecessary interruptions. There are too many other lovely cottages on VRBO to enjoy. This one was disappointing.
You are absolutely right. I was embarrassed. And I did apologize. No maintenance was done and Frank did sit in the truck for 1 1/2 hours.
we fall in love with it once we saw it. The outdoor shower was really cool, the sea view was fascinating, and the house was full of light. It is a down to earth kind of an experience, it makes you feel so alive and lucky in a kind of way that you get to experience staying in this house. we would love to go back there at any time. They even offered us a complimentary tropical fruits basket!
Like living in a fairy tale!
We are so honored to be able to stay here. This place is absolutely amazing. It was like living in a fairy tale. Anya (the owner) is so very gracious and kind.
If you like to get away, then you have found your place. The views from the porch are stunning. You will not want to leave. It really looks as good as it does in the pictures.
Tips: there is a (very friendly) outdoor cat that lives here. The entire place is powered by solar panels. You will most likely have no cell service, radio, broadcast tv, etc here. The shower is outside. None of these should be a problem if you're a nature lover like us.
There is tons of privacy here. You will not see another single person (nor will anyone see you) while staying here. You get to have the entire view all to yourself. :)
We highly recommend this place to those seeking to spend time in the real and 'wild' Hawaii.
Thank you, Anya!
The Last Resort
***WARNING*** Once you've stayed here, you will never want to leave!
Our family has visited Maui three times since 2011, and stayed in several locations around the island. We've stayed at Anya's House every time for no less than four nights and it is by far our most favorite place to stay.
While it's a bit of a trek to this side of the island for first-timers, once here, you will find it a magnificent. Located near Hana, it's a wonderful and secluded place which is still within an easy drive - relative to this side of the island - of Hana.
If swimming is your thing, there are many beaches within easy driving distance; the Red Sand Beach - 'Kaihalulu', Hamoa Beach, and Black Sand Beach - 'Waianapanapa'. And, there is fresh water swimming at the Seven Sacred Pools (Ohe'o Pools) within a 1-1/2 walk of the house.
If you lean more toward hiking, our favorite trail, Pipiwai Trail, starts at the Haleakala National Parks Office at the Ohe'o Pools and is great two-mile mountain journey through jungle terrain, wending its way past enormous trees (one of which is a huge banyan tree about a mile up), and through a fantastic bamboo forest to the Waimoku Falls.
There's always some sort of fresh fruit in season on the property - our favorites include the jamaican lilikoi, bananas, guava, lemons, limes, oranges, and avocados - all of which I love to forage for in the early morning hours. A few years back our daughters picked and roasted coffee beans that were on the property.
The views are outstanding! From the deck, it is breath taking both night and day. At about 3/4 Mile mauka (toward the mountain) of Palapala Ho'omau Church, it has a phenomenal panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean to the southeast - when conditions are right you can see the Mauna Kea, NASA Infrared Telescope. And, there's nothing like taking a shower or bath (also on the deck) either beholding the east slope of majestic Haleakala during the day or viewing the stars at night.
The owners, Anya and Frank, are some of our favorite people and are very gracious and attentive hosts who are a phone call away if needed.
If you find your aloha being a part of nature, bathing in the out doors, foraging for and eating whatever fruit is in season when you picked it minutes before, then there will be no other resort that will measure up to your expectations after your stay here.
Too beautiful for words
Hard to find the right words to praise Anya's House that have not been taken! I spent a solid week there and nearly cried when I had to leave; it's that beautiful and relaxing. Anya could not have been more helpful and courteous; the house looks even better than the pictures.
Ideal for 1, 2, 3, or four. My wife and I stayed in this truly remote and truly beautiful cottage 10 miles south of Hana, near the seven sacred pools. Fabulous private location on the east facing slope of Haleakala, gorgeous gardens, nicely appointed cottage powered by the sun. Delightful outdoor tub and shower. Soft rain, breezes, great sunsets. What could be better? This is Hana at its quiet best. There are hiking trails into the national park, fruit to pick and eat, and an easy 30 minute drive into Hana where the action is. If you want other people or crowds, go somewhere else. If you want blissful beautiful solitude, go to Anya's place. You will not regret it at all. Anya is a friendly and helpful voice at the other end of the line.
