About Karen Whitaker
Tim and Karen live in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia, but call Bryson City there second home. Karen spent many summers there with her grandparents, Troy and Maude Allen, enjoying all the offerings of the Smokey Mountains.
Karen Whitaker purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Karen Whitaker chose Bryson City
We built Helen's Hideaway on family land passed down from my grandparents. The two fireplaces, relaxing hot tub, and luxurious amenities make it all the more special. The large covered porch is the perfect place to rock in the rocking chairs and look out into the trees.
What makes this Cabin unique
10 minutes from Bryson City exit 67 for the Polar Express and the Nantahala Outdoor Center for rafting, kayaking and Tsali Mtn biking trails. There are lots of hiking trails in the area, including the trails of Deep Creek where you can also do some fabulous tubing. If rolling the dice is your thing, the cabin is 30 minutes from Harrah's Casino.

This cabin couldn’t have been more perfect. It’s absolutely beautiful and we would definitely come back . Highly recommend!
Very comfortable and quiet.
Everything was as advertised. The secluded hot tub was a great way to relax after a day of exploring. Great location just off Hwy. 74 gives you great access to a wide range of activities. Near the gorge for great kayaking. Bryson City is a nice little town with some good dining options. The bed and all the furniture were very comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped. We visited in mid Oct. and it was a little early for fall colors. We look forward to visiting in the summer.
When we turned down the bed, the sheets had been slept in .. we contacted owner and she did not seem to believe us. She told us the sheets were probably wrinkled because the housekeeper takes them home to wash and brings them back in a bag .. there was a head print in the bed as well as specks of dirt on the bottom .. we had to wash them and remake the bed . The owner did text and let us know that the housekeeper would come out the next day.. we did not have her come as we took care of the problem.. our disappointment was in the owners attitude.. she clearly did not believe us. The cabin was as we expected, and looked like the pictures .. we also had to sweep the porch of leaves and spider webs. This is understandable in the woods, but obviously had not been done recently.. we would not recommend this cabin .. thank you
I apologize to you now as I did when you contacted me. I understand the sheets were wrinkled and that they didn’t meet your expectations. I am also sorry that you felt you had to take the time to rewash them. I do not have my sheets hotel pressed and housekeeping assured me that the sheets were washed as they are upon every check-in. Also as stated in my attempts to reach you by phone, the housekeeping was at her brother-in-laws wedding over an hour away that evening and that was the reason she could not come out at that moment. As for the leaves and spider webs on the porch, this is a cabin in the woods. Fallen leaves and nature is going to happen. Webs and leaves are routinely swept, but just as fast as they are, nature can be even faster. Perhaps a hotel in a more urban setting would better suit your needs should you decide to visit the Smoky Mountains in the future.
A Breath of Fresh Air
My husband and I stayed at this cozy little cabin for a short getaway. Our friends had recommended it to us, and we are so glad they did. I loved the decor; it's exactly as I would decorate my dream home. The bed was comfy and having our morning cup of coffee on the deck was so relaxing; just being surrounded by the forest and the animals was really peaceful. As mountain bikers, we found some great trails within just a few miles of the cabin. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. The next time we can grab a few days away, we'll definitely want to return to Helen's Hideway.
Beautiful! Abundant amenities! Great location!
We spent a week in Helen’s Hideaway. Attention to detail in this cabin is amazing! Absolutely beautiful, inside and out. Karen was amazing to work with and consistently responded to my emails very quickly. We were already planning our next visit before we left the cabin!!
We had such a wonderful time. We are hoping to make trips back to this cabin every 5 years to celebrate our anniversary. It was elegantly simple, everything we needed was there for us. Literally 10 minutes away from Bryson City and very close to activities such as hiking and white water river rafting. It was completely secluded from the other cabins in the area and we got just the amount of privacy we desired. All in all, a perfect honeymoon! Thank you!
