Island Magic is an upscale one-level home in the prestigious, gated community known as Hartstene Pointe, located on Harstine Island. It offers QUALITY. And compared to other homes at the Pointe or elsewhere in Puget Sound, the VALUE is also clear. Simply check out our rates. You'll see why many choose to make this their "home away from home." And it's wheelchair accessible with ramp to front entry provided!

Let's take a tour. Please remove your shoes and enjoy the tiled entry hall covered with a wool Karastan rug. As you enter the carpeted Great Room, with its 12-foot vaulted ceiling and skylights, you see lush foliage through a bank of picture windows. No other buildings are visible. The greenbelt provides complete privacy.

Step onto the 60-foot-long deck overlooking a deep wooded ravine. The deck itself adds 400 sq. ft. of exterior living space to the 1600 sq. ft. inside. Once outside, the beauty, fresh scent, and absolute stillness of the forest enfold you. A path from the house connects with a winding trail seen at the bottom of the ravine. A 10-minute walk via this picturesque trail or by going north from 749 Promontory Road, and you're at Indian Cove beach.

Indeed, you are never far from the water. Walk out the front door, cross Promontory Road, and in 100 feet you are overlooking Puget Sound (Pickering Passage) and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains to the west (see Photo 1).

Indian Cove offers a covered picnic area as well as a 100-slip marina where both sailboats and powerboats are moored. Fish from the deck, collect shells, or dig for clams.

Returning to the Great Room, two comfortable couches focus on the Lopi woodstove (dry firewood outside) and the armoire that serves as an entertainment center. Open its doors to the wide-screen 26-inch HD TV, DVD/VCR player, CD Player, and Cassette Deck, all available for your viewing and listening pleasure. Enjoy some of the 300 newer films as well as movie classics, including Disney favorites. There is a second TV with VCR and DVD players in the 11' x 17' Master Suite. The Great Room also features a fully restored polished ebony 1980 Yamaha U-3 piano. This professional grade instrument has a gorgeous sound. Furthermore, unlimited CenturyLink High-Speed Internet is also available in the house.

The house can sleep up to 8 people, with three spacious bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a Natuzzi leather sofa Queen bed in the Great Room. The Master Suite as well as the second and third bedroom have comfortable Sealy Posturepedic Queen-size beds. You'll find a package of freshly laundered white sheets in each bedroom ready for you to make up. You'll also enjoy white bath sheets, hand towels, and washcloths as well as plenty of comfy pillows. When you leave, simply put the linens you have used in the laundry room.

The dining area, with its American oak pedestal table, adjoins the modern kitchen. It has every appliance, cooking implement, and basic staples you're likely to need. The adjacent utility room has a large capacity washer and dryer. A gifted interior designer has combined antique furnishings, artwork, an extensive library, and memorabilia related to family, career, and world-wide travels into a pleasing whole.

Island Magic is a perfect spot for a romantic getaway. In fact, our older son and his bride spent the first night of their honeymoon here. It is also an ideal place for a family reunion or a vacation with children. Young people can be seen riding tricycles, bicycles, and skateboards on the paved roads of our safe and kid-friendly community with a speed limit of just 15 miles per hour. Everything moves at a slower pace at the Pointe, with about 325 houses and 90 condos nestled in the forest and along the shore.

Walking 5 minutes to the south from Island Magic brings you to the Pointe's Clubhouse. Its centerpiece is an Olympic-size swimming pool plus a children's wading pool and a hot tub with a capacity of 12. The pools are open from Memorial Day weekend through the weekend following Labor Day, and guests are asked to observe the posted regulations. Our two sons loved swimming here as they were growing up.

Like the house, the Clubhouse also offers unlimited High-Speed Internet, along with a library, ping pong and pool tables (paddles, cue sticks, and balls are available at Island Magic). Across the road is our fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment. Hartstene Pointe, which is on the northern tip of Harstine Island, provides many other amenities to residents and guests, including swings for kids, 3 tennis courts, 5.5 miles of walking trails, and 3.5 miles of beaches and lagoons. You may want to bring a canoe or kayak to launch at Indian Cove. Use the two bikes and helmets in the garage to explore the Pointe as well as the 10-mile-long island beyond the gates.

Founded in 1971 as a planned community of 231 acres with underground utilities, abundant common areas, and a carefully managed forest, the Pointe is often called 'paradise found' -- a unique destination in the Pacific Northwest.

Harstine Island itself is located 25 minutes from Shelton, Washington, and is accessible via the Harstine Island Bridge from Highway 3 between Bremerton and Shelton. The island is the third largest in the South Sound (after Vashon and Bainbridge) consisting of 19 square miles with 25 miles of shoreline. Harstine is non-commercial and rural, with dense forestation and abundant wildlife. Deer frequently wander by the house.

Island Magic is also an ideal base from which you can explore the town of Shelton, scenic Hood Canal, Alderbrook Resort and Spa, the Olympic Peninsula, and nearby cities and towns such as Olympia, Port Townsend, Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Gig Harbor. One scenic route from Sea-Tac Airport entails a 30-minute ferry ride from Fauntleroy to Southworth. From Southworth, Island Magic is only a 60-minute drive via Gorst, Belfair, and Allyn. We offer QUALITY and VALUE. Please give us a call or send an email with you phone number. We respond quickly to all inquiries.

About The Owner

I learned to love music from an early age in my home, starting piano lessons at the age of seven. To see where my passion for music has taken me, check out my website. My parents also gave me a love for travel, taking me on flying vacations from the time I was a toddler. Further, Mom and Dad instilled in me an interest in people from all kinds of backgrounds. As a result, one of my favorite sayings is: 'Strangers are friends I haven't met yet.' I thoroughly enjoy building relationships, often with those who are quite different from me. This orientation helps me to be a good 'innkeeper' and to enjoy sharing my home with many 'new friends.'

The Owner purchased this house in 2002

Why The Owner chose Shelton

I discovered Hartstene Pointe in the mid-1970s. My wife and our two sons rented one of the Pointe's 'island houses' (condos) from friends who lived near us in Seattle. We made countless trips to Harstine Island during various times of the year, but always staying for at least a week every summer. In 2002, my older son and I were guests at that same island house on Promontory Road and happened to take a providential walk. We saw a 'for sale by owner' sign in front of the home I now call Island Magic. Having known the community for 25 years and with good memories of so many family times here, I made an offer that was ultimately accepted. It has turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

What makes this house unique

For me, staying at Island Magic is experiencing a little taste of heaven. The wonderful quiet, comfort, and restfulness of my home is noticed by all who enter. I'm no more than a five-minute walk from the Pointe's Club House and swimming pool (open Memorial Day weekend through the second weekend after Labor Day). That is a great gathering spot, similar to a lovely country club. Walking ten minutes in the other direction brings me to the beach at Indian Cove. The majestic forest and the waters of Puget Sound with magnificent mountain vistas provide a richness of beauty that is inexhaustible. With 5.5 miles of walking trails and 3.5 miles of private shoreline, there is always something new to explore. Please take a moment to read some of the comments left in my guestbook. If you are intrigued by them, perhaps a visit to Island Magic would be the perfect choice for you. Sometimes Island Magic is one of several homes at the Pointe rented for gatherings of families and friends. Our home has also been used for church retreats, getaways for 'the girls,' and scrapbooking parties.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are so grateful for being able to spend 9 days in your amazing house on Harstine Island. It was a privilege to learn about you and your extended family as well as to spend some personal time with you. We had a fantastic vacation here! Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality.

Magic is an understatement - tranquil and so NW

  • 5 of 5

We have often used VRBO/Home Away for our vacation plans and this is the best stay we have experienced in our 8 years of using the service. Skip is noticeably proud of his property and very eloquent in his delivery of information. We knew so much about Hartstene Island and Harstine Pointe long before we arrived and our expectations were extremely high. Well they were exceeded by a long shot and the 6 of us had a fantastic time. The house was lovely, very well appointed and equipped and spotless throughout. The walks in the woods, the marina area and especially the pool, located at the community club house, were all wonderful places to spend time at. It’s too bad we were only their for 3 nights, but plans for our future will include this gem of a find, if Skip will kindly rent to us when that time comes. Thank you for the time in your beautiful home.

Great home at the Pointe!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed Island Magic, in particular the single story was great for my aging parents. My kids loved the movie collection and all accommodations were great. Very clean and accommodating. We loved the views from the deck into the rain forest and the trail below to the marina. We would definitely stay at Island Magic again if Skip would have us.

Comfort and peace of mind

  • 5 of 5

We have a daughter in a wheelchair. The owner, Skip, took extra steps to ensure our comfort and security by purchasing a small ramp for the front porch and a gate for the back porch. No other modifications were needed.

Our family enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and the nature trails (although these were not wheelchair accessible). We especially enjoyed the Spit and the tidal pools held adventure for our young children to explore. We enjoyed building a fire in one of the pits at the Spit, before fire conditions prohibited anymore open fires.

Very beautiful location, and the rental home was fully furnished (internet, dishes, TV, even bikes & charcoal grill) for our comfortable two weeks' stay.

Additional information about rental rates

Cleaning fee $65
Refundable damage deposit $250
Pet Fee $50

Payment is by personal check. The first step in confirming a reservation is to have a phone conversation with the owner. The next step is to mail him two personal checks, one for the first night's rent plus the $65 cleaning fee, and the second for $250, as a security deposit that doesn't get cashed prior to the visit. The latter check is deposited only if a post-stay inspection reveals damage to the property. (Guests are also responsible for damages to the house that exceed $250, the amount of which may be decided by a professional mediator.) When the owner receives these two checks, he will confirm the reservation by email. The balance will then due 30 days prior to arrival. When the owner receives a check for the outstanding balance, he will confirm by email that the reservation is paid in full.

Reservations during the Peak Season for 2 nights, rather than the normal 3-night minimum, may be accepted if there's an opening 45 days (or less) prior to your desired check-in date. Please contact us, and we'll do our best for you.

July 4 falls within our Peak Season's 3-night minimum. But for this popular holiday, there's a 4-night minimum.

This is a shoe-free house--bare feet, socks only please (the entry hall has a shoe rack). In addition, no smoking inside or outside the house please. Dogs are allowed on a case-by-case basis for a fee of $75.00 per stay.

Cancellation Policy: 1st night's rent plus the cleaning fee confirms a reservation. Cancellations 30 days or more prior to occupancy forfeit only the 1st night's rent. The security deposit of $250, collected in a separate personal check, is not cashed, regardless of when a cancellation occurs. Full payment is due 30 days before occupancy. When a booking is cancelled less than 30 days in advance of the arrival date, there is no refund, unless the house can be re-rented for the same period. In the absence of a refund, guests are given a credit for the funds already paid, which can be applied to a future booking.

To confirm a reservation, a personal check for the first night plus the cleaning fee is required. A second check for $250, a security deposit that doesn't get cashed unless there is damage to the house during a guest's stay, is also required. The balance of the rental amount is due 30 days prior to arrival. Rates are not guaranteed before a booking is confirmed.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
