Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2006

Since venturing to the Big Island 15 years ago, I've always been drawn to the volcano, warm springs, and rainforest. As a documentary photographer for over two decades, the 15 different microclimates delight in an ever changing offering of surreal landscapes, diversity of character and faces, exotic/colorful fauna, and island politics, gives a profuse array of visual opportunities and is a photographer's paradise. I feel fortunate to have a home located minutes from all my favorite sites and love having the opportunity to share the experience.

Why the Owner Chose Keaau

For those that seek the peace and serenity of a rainforest getaway, the Hawaiian Jungle Hangout/Hut offers just that. It is not more than a twenty minute drive to many of the Puna and Hilo highlights and is located between the town centers of Pahoa and Keaau. Being only three miles from a dramatic coastline that attracts whales during the winter, the Puna area attracts hikers, bikers, and those that want to experience Pele's landscape.

The Jungle House

Guest: JKJ (Fort Collins, Colorado)
Date of Stay: 12/27/11 Review Submitted: 01/02/12

The house was beautiful, more so than we expected! We found the house quite easily and loved its feeling of solitude. The owner was quite helpful. We would definitely recommend the Hawaiian Jungle Hangout to family and friends. It was a great location for experiencing Volcanoes National Park, Hilo, and the surrounding shoreline.

So Comfortable...

Guest: Rick, Donna and Steven (Chicago, Illinois)
Date of Stay: 05/15/11 Review Submitted: 06/04/11

Staying at the Jungle Hangout was like home away from home, except in Hawaii! The home had all the extras we needed and more. The photos of the property are perfectly accurate and everything was clean and in great condition. The yard and surrounding area was beautiful, we loved the variety of plant life. The location was perfect for our interests. We hiked around Volcanoes National Park, Chain of Craters Rd, Kalapana, and the Puna Coast. Driving along 137 we stopped at Ahalanui Park, Isaac Hale Park, MacKenzie State Recreational Area and up to Kalapana. Its a beautiful drive and we made lots of stops by the coast for spectacular views. We meant to try a few of the Pahoa restaurants but ended up shopping and eating in our comfy home.We did our shopping at KTA Superstores near Hilo. The one night we ate out was at Ning's Thai Cuisine in Pahoa and it was very good. Liz was extremely helpful in supplying all the information we needed both for our stay at the Hangout and for the surrounding area. We would love to stay here again and would recommend the home for anyone planning a stay in the area. Thanks for sharing your home Liz. The only downside was having to leave.

Wonderful getaway

It was a delight to find this house in the midst of paradise on the Big Island. The house was clean and had all the amentities plus more. The plus included beach towels, beach mats, snorkel gear, boogie boards and more. It was so nice to have everything there for your use. Liz was not just the owner, but our tour guide as well. She provided great suggestions for places to eat, play, and whatever else you needed. it was a great location for the drive to the volcano park and tide pools for snorkeling. We felt at home and loved our stay at the Hawaiian Jungle Hangout. We will definitely come back the next time we are on the Big Island.

We could have stayed here forever!

Guest: Rebecca (Charlottesville, VA)
Date of Stay: 01/02/11 Review Submitted: 01/23/11

Out of a three week vacation across three different islands, the Jungle Hangout was by far the favorite place we stayed! We found it the perfect location for seeing the eastern side of the Big Island. The house is beautifully decorated; and being surrounded by beautiful trees and plants, tree frogs, and birds was a really special feeling. It's very spacious and has plenty of room for everyone. The snorkel and beach gear were also really helpful. We loved snorkeling in the nearby Kapoho tidal pools, and going to Volcanoes National Park (also nearby). Stay here on your next trip to the Big Island!!!!!!!!

Just like staying at a friend's house...

Guest: Heather from Seattle (Seattle)
Date of Stay: 05/26/10 Review Submitted: 06/09/10

From the first phone call with Liz to locking the door behind me as I left, everything was perfect. The house was cozy, private, comfortable and well stocked with CD's, DVD's, some books, extra blankets, cooking utensils, pots, pans, plates. Liz was thoughtful, considerate and a great host from afar. She even called midway to check on me. I have rented through VRBO several times and The Jungle Hangout was the most positive experience I have had so far through this group. If you are considering renting with Liz-don't hold back.....and anticiapte a great home ready for fun, happiness and relaxation. BUT-there are stairs up to the main floor if you rent The Hangout. Mahalo Liz! P.S. And it was really clean too!

25th Anniversary stay

Guest: Kathi9999 (Oklahoma)
Date of Stay: 05/17/10 Review Submitted: 05/24/10

This home is beautiful with all the amenities of home. The listing on the home does not describe it adequately, it was WONDERFUL. Liz was more than helpful every step of the way, from first inquiry to check out. I have already recommended this property to some frequent Hawaii travelers at the airport and will recommend to anyone I know going to the big island. The gardens surrounding the home are beautiful and well maintained as is the house. Should we visit the Bog Oslands again we will stay at this property again. Thank you Liz!

We loved everything about the Jungle Hut! It was nice to stay out of the city and stay in a true jungle. The house was clean and there was everything we could ever need there. It was like being at home but much more fun! Liz was excellent to work with and we would stay here again for sure.
