Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of Lake Erie since 1861. It is built of native, local limestone, and is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on Lake Erie. It is wonderfully unique and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a "Rock") and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, creating a new Great Room and state of the art kitchen with everything needed to cook for and dine 30+ guests.
Rock of Ages overlooks the Lake Erie islands and is in the quaint village of Marblehead and is only a hop, skip, and a jump from the east gate of Lakeside (The Chautauqua of Lake Erie) in one direction and the historic Marblehead lighthouse in the other. The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, down-home people, great entertainment (at Lakeside and the islands), wonderful local history, great boating and fishing, Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of Lake Erie, are constantly there. What a place! From Rock of Ages'tower room is one of the best views of Lake Erie in the area. Come and see!
Rock of Ages has a 120-foot spacious lakefront patio and three other patios with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating and gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house. A large sandy beach is a short drive away. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when "The Rock" was first built. There is a large hot tub overlooking the lake.
We have plenty of room for the whole family (7000+sq.ft.) and lots of bed and bath options. There is a first-floor suite with a king bed and its' own bath for those who do not do stairs. On the second floor each of the five bedrooms has a king-size bed and a private bath. The third floor is great for kids. Six bedrooms surround a large common area with a large-screen TV.
There is one king bed, one queen bed, 5 full-size beds, 3 twins and 4 rollaways up there. The third floor bedrooms share a fullsize bath and two half baths. You have already heard about the view from the tower room! It has a kingsize bed, its' own bath, and a roof-top patio. Folks will fight over who gets to sleep there!
On the first floor as well as the kitchen and dining/great room, there is a living room with TV and computer with internet access. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level - not really a basement (it was the old summer kitchen) is a large game room area with a pool table, pingpong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs. There is a backyard patio with two large grills. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accommodate big groups.
Although it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year round and the lake in all its glory in the winter with ice and snow is something else!! It is a great place for business or church groups or special interest retreats and seminars, for example birders or artists.
Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or bed and breakfast. Our kitchen can easily handle the needs of a catered event or a weekend getaway. We can put you in touch with a couple of local catering companies just around the corner from Rock of Ages who have catered a number of groups staying at Rock of Ages. They can cook for you all week,or just do a special meal indoors or outdoors.

I have stayed at Rock of Ages three times with a group of 10 women! It is a wonder place to stay. Large enough for the whole group, yet cozy corners to get away from it all. The kitchen is large and great to work in. The view of the lake from almost all the windows is an added bonus! If the weather is nice, you can walk right up town to all the shops and places to eat. I can not say enough good things about this place!

Summer campers at Rock of Ages in the winter

We are all friends who camp together all summer. On February 17 we arrived at "Rock of Ages" for ag fun week end together. By the middle of winter we are anxious for camping season to begin but in North East Ohio it is too early so we enjoy getting together in the winter months and this seems to make the time go faster until it is once again spring and time to see everyone at our permantent camp sites. Rock of Ages was more than we could have hoped for. The view is breathtaking. There was more kitchen amenities than we could lhave imagined and everything was included from paper product to cleaning products to dishwasher and laundry soap and fabric softener. If you needed it, it was there. The bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry facilities were all more than we could have asked for. The cleanliness was as how I would expect it at the best resorts. The quilts on the beds are gourgeous, as is everything. We can't say enough wounderful things about "The Rock" We have already made our reservations for next year. Except next year we are staying for three night (which isn't enough). The quaint shops in downtown Marble Head are so unique and the owners so friendly. I am sure this is a destination we will be back to year after year . Sitting in the large leather chairs in front of the large windows while being warmed by the beautiful gas log fireplace is one of the most relaxing times I have had in a very long time. I would recommend this home to everyone, and I thank Marla for sharing it with us. We are ALL looking forward to next February. Thanks Marla, Terri

This is a great family reunion house! Four generations of our family (age 3+ to 84) traveled from many different states to stay together at the Rock of Ages house. Every morning, we watched the sunrise on Lake Erie. Our days were spent in the town of Marblehead, at Cedar Point, Put-in-Bay, and at the beach on Lake Erie. They were all great. Some family members explored the wineries around the area. Who knew Ohio made such great wine! Our evenings were spent cooking together, sharing stories, playing cards, and laughing. Just the kind of family fun we love! The house fit our needs perfectly. The kitchen was all we expected and more. We had plenty of space to spread out. There were plenty of bathrooms and bedrooms, but I wished the bedrooms had dressers or closets to put clothes away. Living for a week out of a suitcase was the only down side.
Owner response:Sigh! I wish Rock of Ages' bedrooms had closets too! But,when The Rock was built over 150 years ago---closets were not generally put into bedrooms. Eight out of the 13 bedrooms have dressers though and all of the bedrooms have clothes trees for hanging up clothes. Rock of Ages is not a hotel, inn or bed and breakfast---but an historic family home--you will feel a little more like you are staying in your Grandma or aunt's vacation home, than a hotel.

If you're looking for a wonderful place to stay in this area of Ohio, look no more, you've found it! Myself and a group of lady friends started staying here for our once a year get -a- way weekend. We were so amazed when we arrived the first time that we unanimously agreed to return the next year without reserve. The house is so large and spacious and has EVERY possible thing you might need to make your stay a pleasure. Other than food and your clothing you need NOTHING! The furnishings and especially the beds and linens are of such high quality you'll feel like you're in the finest hotel in Europe. Each room has its own special charm. The fact that it was built years ago and still holds the splendor of a grand estate not only is a testament to how well it was constructed but also the great care and upkeep the owners have done and still do to keep it that way. Since 2005 we have been returning yearly and have NEVER been disappointed. It seems like each year gets better and now feels like a visit to an old friend. I'm happy to say, we have just returned from our recent stay in May and once again have booked for 2012!! Everyone should experience this place just once in their life! You will be very happy you did!

Our group consisted of eight couples who simply wanted a weekend away after the holidays. When we walked in and saw the fireplace already glowing, we knew we had found our retreat. The Rock is perfect. The main floor, including the kitchen, is large and spacious yet warm and cozy. The fantastic views of the frozen lake are amazing. We had a dinner party catered by Avery's, a local restaurant, and enjoyed a delightful Saturday evening. The bedrooms and baths are quaint, comfortable and clean. The men especially enjoyed the lower level pool table, ping pong table and TV. Everything is provided; guests need only bring clothes and personal items. The kitchen has at least one of anything you can think of; all you need to bring is food and drink. Before we left, the vote was unanimous-we're coming back next year. We have already booked The Rock for our 2012 winter weekend!

This place was amazing in so many ways. We had so many beautifully decorated bedrooms to choose from. The large tables to eat together was so nice. We played games in front of the fire place. We worshiped and sang hymns out on the tables by the water. The kitchen was amazing. My dream kitchen! The caterer you recommended was killer good! The 16 ladies from church were in love with the place and hope to return.

AMAZING, AWESOME, OUTSTANDING, SPECTACULAR! The Rock was unparrelled to any place we've ever stayed. Twenty-five special education teachers enjoyed lounging in the hot tub, sitting by the lake in the adorondeck chairs, playing the grand piano, playing pool and eating fabulous meals. Everything about the Rock was first class, from the wine glasses to the bedding. The decorating of all the bedrooms was really special. I have just finished booking the Rock for a comeback. Everyone loved it so much they begged me to go back. I don't see how anyone would be disappointed.
