The Sanctuary
Nestled in the Foothills of Ojai behind a high stonewall lies a magical, 1.6 acre property, an oasis of beauty, tranquility and privacy. As the artisan crafted iron gates swing open, you enter another world. An orchard of orange and tangerine trees, laden with fruit or fragrant blossoms, lines the drive to a spacious parking area under spreading mulberry trees. With grape vines on one side and an ancient gnarled olive standing sentinel on the other, you could well believe you had been transported to the South of France.
Through an arch, a hedge-lined path leads before you to a private guest cottage or to the right, down a stone pathway to the charming main house surrounded by gardens, olive trees and a giant old fig tree. An orchard of peach, apricot, plum and apple trees lie to the back of the house down a series of landscaped levels. The air is scented by the profusion of flowering plants and is filled with bird song and the melodious sound of four fountains. There are many serene, private, outdoor seating areas to relax in and enjoy, sheltered from the sun.
A large sunken garden surrounded by tall hedges conceals a 44’ x 15’ sparkling, saltwater pool (with automated cover) and a large spa, set in a carpet of green grass, with stunning views of the mountains and the evening sky. An inviting 22’ x 12’ arbor provides shade, seating and outdoor dining.
The main house has a timeless European feel, with its travertine and wide plank floors, Venetian plastered walls, arched doorways and barreled ceilings. There are 3 bedrooms and three baths in the main house, a media room with a 65” HD TV, a well-equipped kitchen, a family room and separate dining alcove. Each window frames a view of the gardens and every bedroom opens to the out-of- doors.
The large master bedroom is a sanctuary of peace and silence. Elegant 8-foot French doors open onto a covered veranda and a courtyard enclosed by tall hedges, a burbling limestone French fountain at its center. The bedroom’s king-size four-poster bed, barreled ceiling, hand-painted walls, fine rugs and furnishings create a deeply romantic, nurturing environment.
The master bath continues the warm European ambiance of the bedroom with faux painted walls, heated travertine floors, a large soaking tub and a double shower, with a separate W.C.
The second bedroom has a queen-sized bed, pine floors, glass doors that open onto a star jasmine covered deck overlooking a garden below.
The third bedroom has a high-end, pull out couch bed with an excellent queen-sized mattress. Glass doors look out to a courtyard and the view of the limestone fountain and the colorful bird life it attracts.
Relax in front of the stone fireplace in the warm glow of the inviting, amber-hued living room, which opens onto the front patio and rose garden. Its old pine floors, walls hung with paintings and tapestries, shelves of leather-bound books, soothe the spirit.
The charming 'Guest Cottage' offers a queen-sized bed, an adjoining comfortable living area with cable TV and Internet connection, a fully furnished kitchen, well-appointed bathroom and dining patio surrounded by orange trees and rosemary bushes. This restful cottage is available to rent by itself if the main property is not rented. Perfect as a weekend get-away or quiet retreat, it has a private entrance and off street parking.
Discover for yourself, this tranquil, green sanctuary only 1.4 miles from Ojai’s downtown Arcade. The areas extensive hiking trails are at the top of the road and the award winning Ojai Valley Inn golf course is less than five minutes drive away.
