North Haven farmhouse description

This antique waterfront farmhouse, set just inside the entrance to Pulpit Harbor, combines the charm of its 1850’s roots with large, comfortable living spaces, unbelievable views, and one of the most desirable locations on North Haven Island. If you’re unfamiliar with Pulpit Harbor, read any cruising guide to the Maine Coast and you’ll learn all you need to know about the beauty and quality of this legendary yachting destination. The setting, at the end of Pulpit Harbor Road, is very private. The field below the house ends at one of the nicest swimming beaches on the island.

The house itself lives up to its surroundings. The first floor features an open living and dining area, a well-equipped and fully modern kitchen, a double bedroom, a sitting/TV room and a full bath with laundry. Upstairs are a large master suite with queen bed and porch, two smaller bedrooms with 2 twin beds in each, and a second full bath. The world sails by below the covered porch and sun deck that wrap around the south side of the house. Views from inside and out are into the main anchorage and out across the harbor entrance to West Penobscot Bay, nearby islands and the Camden Hills beyond. The house comes with 2 sit-on-top kayaks and a mooring suitable for boats with a draft of up to 4’. Moorings for larger yachts are readily available.

Access to North Haven is via a ferry that makes the 12-mile trip to and from Rockland three times daily. The village of North Haven (where the ferry lands, about 4 miles away) has a small but vibrant collection of shops, galleries, boat yards and restaurants, and a thriving performing arts schedule presented in an outstanding theatre in the community center. Island farms produce much of North Haven’s summer demand for fresh vegetables, cheeses, shellfish and other produce. A well-stocked grocery is located half way between Pulpit Harbor and the village. The island’s land trust hosts weekly walks and kayak trips throughout the summer.

There are few more idylic places in the world to spend a summer week or two than the islands of Mid-Coast Maine. And there are few houses more tranquil and beautifully situated to spend them in than ours.

          Owner info

          Year Purchased: 1999

Why the Owner Chose North Haven:
North Haven is a relaxed and low key island -- what some have described as the way Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket might be if they could start over. Big enough to support a wonderful summer and year-round community, isolated enough to discourage tourist traffic, with a strong focus on outdoor activities around the island and on the dozens of smaller, uninhabited islands that surround it.
