My daughter and I found the Bunkhouse to be the perfect setting for our mother-daughter get-a-way. The house was comfortable, spotlessly clean, welcoming and met all our needs. We love to cook and we found the kitchen well equipped. Owners, Ronda and Mike were gracious, friendly, available and helpful. Thanks again Ronda for making our dinner reservation at the Julian Grille and thanks Mike for giving us a tour of the Bridle Ridge property. I have been a San Diego resident for 40+ years and although a regular visitor to the Julian area this was the first time I have stayed at a vacation rental in this area. If we hadn't already made plans to go into Julian (just a short drive from the Bunkhouse) for a delicious dinner at the Julian Grille and a charming afternoon tea at the Tea Cottage, we would have been blissfully content relaxing on the Bunkhouse porch enjoying the natural surroundings. Earlier reviews of this property have mentioned the porch and now I understand why. During our stay we spent many memorable hours on the porch enjoying each others company drinking our coffee in the morning, sipping wine in the early evening hours, playing dominoes and being entertained by the birds and other wildlife including a bobcat that passed by one morning! Ronda, you have certainly added your own delightful enhancements to a naturally beautiful and serene outdoor area adjacent to the porch. The various bird feeders and bird baths attract numerous birds creating a theater-in-the-round effect and the comfortable seating on the porch with all the "Ronda" ambience (lilac bushes, pots of flowers, wind-chimes, candles, bird identification manual) make this outdoor living space the idyllic place to relax and watch the continuous avian performances. The property name "The Bunkhouse" does not adequately describe this tranquil, nature-lovers country retreat and not only would I highly recommend this property to friends and relatives, I look forward to future stays myself. Thanks again Ronda and Mike.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This was a return visit for us, at a different season, and it we loved being at the Bunkhouse again. It is feeling like a second home. Our family loves the serenity. We saw many beautiful birds, deer, and wild turkeys, right from the windows of the house and as we walked around nearby. The stars at night were magnificent. It is walking distance to Wm Heise Park for hikes, and a short enough drive to Cuyamaca, horseback riding stables, the Wolf Center and to downtown Julian. We cooked more this time, in the well-equipped and clean kitchen, in part because we so enjoyed being in the cabin and its surroundings. We hope to be back many more times. Again, Ronda was very gracious and accommodating. Thank you Ronda, Mike and Symon for a wonderful time.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Lynn, we were thrilled to have you all again and pleased you experienced another season in Julian. Your appreciation of mother nature and the outdoors makes it a true pleasure to know you and spend time with all of you. Thank you, Ronda, Mike and Symon

We had a great holiday weekend at the Bunkhouse. Rhonda and Mike were so warm and friendly. The accomodations were wonderful. Plenty of space and a very well stocked kitchen. Rhonda had a fire going for us when we arrived along with goodies. So relaxing. It was a nice way to relax and unwind from the constant go go go of the city. We will be back.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Charlie and Dee, it was our pleasure! It was nice to see you out hiking on the ranch and enjoying the fresh air. Thank you for your kind comments and we hope to see you again soon. Ronda

We stayed at the Bunkhouse with another retired couple for all of Thanksgiving week, so had plenty of time to really settle in and take advantage of its many charms. We were in the Julian area to enjoy nature, and the Bunkhouse was the perfect spot for us. The silent starry nights, the frequent animal visitors (wild turkeys and deer, especially) and the warm comfort of the living room with its excellent woodstove were highlights. Short walks right out the door on the owner’s land, beautiful hikes both in the woods and up on the ridge of nearby William Heise County Park, and glorious hikes in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and Anza Borrego Desert State Park were all within easy reach. Among the many great experiences we have had renting through VRBO, Ronda stands out as the most generous and responsive host we’ve encountered. She felt like an old friend even before we arrived, and her thoughtful touches made us feel completely at home and cared for. There are a lot of beautiful places to see, but knowing the Bunkhouse is waiting there in Julian will certainly draw us back to the area again.Recommended for: Age 55+.
Owner response: Candace, your kind comments touch our hearts and we are so pleased that the Bunkhouse is so special that you look forward to returning. We enjoy meeting new friends and making them as comfortable as possible. We will look forward to seeing you again. All the best in the New Year....and happy hiking! Ronda

This was a beautiful, private setting, in a tastefully decorated house. The kitchen was clean and well-equipped for cooking. It is located only minutes from Wm Heise Park which has wonderful hiking. Ronda was very flexible and accomodating, and went out of her way to be nice to our family. We enjoyed meeting her, Mike and Symon. Hope to be back.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Lynn, it was a great visit and we enjoyed our time sharing. Hiking in our area has excellent changes with the seasons and we hope we can accommodate your future visits. Appreciate your kind comments, all the best....Ronda, Mike, and Symon!

We had a truly wonderful time at the Bunkhouse and were glad you and Mike joined us our first evening. The Bunkhouse is the most comfortable and inviting place to stay. The turkeys and their routine, the deer eating the birdseed from the feeder and of course the hummers and all of the other birds. The reunion was great Seeing so many of my friends and remembering those great school years together. We will look forward to coming back and spening more time on the that wonderful porch. Arrived at The Bunkhouse and was presently surprised at the size and location of the property. The Bunkhouse is equipped with all the amenities one could want to feel at home in the mountains. The front porch was a wonderful place to sit and watch the birds and wildlife (wild turkeys and deer) that are common to the Julian area. Although out of the town of Julian, the proximity to the town was close enough to provide easy access and you are within walking distance to William Heise Park. T The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with towels and necessities clean and fresh. Rhonda is a wonderful host and provided a great overview of the area and Simon (her Australian Shepard) was a great part of the welcoming committee. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would recommend her new Wedding Site as well.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Darren, thank you for sharing your experience with future renters. We really enjoy making each stay unique and personlizing the visit around everyone's needs and expectations. Each day brings a new and wonderful date with Mother Nature. Thanks again, Ronda, Mike, & Symon!

This is a wonderful place to stay. It's quite, beautiful and full of God's little creatures. When you wake up in the morning you are greeted by dear, rabbits, hummingbirds and an array of beautiful birds. The tranquil feelings of peace fill the air. The cute cozy cottage like house is beautifully decorated, rustic but elegant, it's simply beautiful. If you want to really get some good Rest and Relaxation, this is the place to go. The owners and big Simon are wonderful and they make you feel like you're at home. They are truly wonderful individuals. Make a reservation. You won't be sorry. You will love it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind comments. The Bunkhouse is truly unique and is providing Mother Nature an appreciative audience! We are blessed with great guests that we hope will return soon. Most sincerely....all the critters, Symon and Ronda & Mike.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: Wanting to make our family move from Colorado to Southern California as smooth as possible, my father elected to settle in the mountains east of San Diego in the Gold Mine town of Julian. I had the privilege of growing up, going to school and working in this small, family orientated town. Following college I tipped my toe in the fountain of travel and never turned back. Keeping the world at my finger tips and my small town in my heart, I moved back up to Julian and have combined my talents with the love of nature and the mountains.
Why the Owner Chose Julian:
The Bunkhouse is unique in the fact that it has a great calming effect on those that visit it. Once you drive up you see how secluded and peaceful the location is with the wind blowing through the pines, a faint melody of wind chimes and the flutter of the birds on their feeders, you will understand why this makes a great vacation for those needing a one-on-one with nature.
The Unique Benefits at this Bungalow:
Without a doubt the front porch is one of our favorite spots. Facing North Peak (south), the easterly breeze keeps the temperatures down and viewing optimal. The living room - especially in the winter with the wood burning stove fired up - is very comfortable and has several large windows that bring in the morning sunlight and evening stars. If you are looking for secluded but still rustic, with a touch of class vacation, then the Bunkhouse is for you.
