Summerland cottage description
Retreat to this cozy, coastal getaway with a spacious view deck that features stunning views of the Pacific and Santa Barbara's Channel Islands. Seaglass Cove is such a wonderfully unique retreat. Cashmere and marble coupled with old wood floors and a seaside casualness make for the perfect 'safe harbor.' Thoughtfully furnished for rejuvenation and perhaps even hibernation, with attention to artful, quality details throughout, this charming one bedroom unit will envelope you in comfort. Upon arrival, one enters the driveway to park in an off-street, privately designated parking spot adjacent to the front entry. On the way up the driveway one passes the organic vegetable garden, young fruit trees and terraced hillside with lush green view lawn. Once inside the large window-lined living room, the ocean views call you to the deck. Through French doors you enter a private deck with potted plants and a table for two. But for foggy days, the views are truly captivating! Back inside, you notice the new down-filled sofa and ecclectic furnishings including the works of local artists on the walls. The new flat screen TV is hidden away but easily accessible in the large antique hutch. In the kitchen are slab marble counters, a refurbished, vintage Tappan stove, otherwise new appliances and charming windows and a doorway leading to a back entry and the laundry. The kitchen is fitted with quality basics and then some. (If you have a special request for something that is not already featured, I will consider providing it for you.) The cozy bedroom is a sanctuary of quality and comfort with an antique, queen-size four-post bed, multi-thread-count sheets on a pillow top mattress and custom made bedspread with throw pillows, as well as other special furnishings for your ultimate slumber. Though the interior details are special indeed, inside or out the highlight of the property is the view, which features the daily, ever-changing art scapes of Mother Nature herself as she paints the sea and the sky around the Channel Islands. Walk into the sweet town of Summerland. Relax on the beach. Hike the local trails. Or take a drive up or down the coast and explore Santa Barbara and beyond. This is a special sanctuary for two.

- Seaglass Cove (and sister property, Seaglass Lookout, vrbo #393364) is located in the quaint seaside town of Summerland. Summerland is conveniently located literally a stones throw from Montecito and within minutes to Santa Barbara. It has a rare, small town, unspoiled charm in a part of the Golden State so known for tourism, and yet so close to all the attractions of the area. Summerland itself is known for it's clapboard cottages and antique stores, as well as restaurants, unique & stylish clothing and gift boutiques and it's proximatey to the world famous polo fields just down the street. Residents still collect their mail at the central post office while others ride their horses through town from nearby ranches and polo fields, for a run on the beach. Being just off the 101 freeway, it is easily accessible and local Santa Barbarans are often known to getaway for breakfast in one of it's well loved coffee shops and breakfast restaurants, or an afternoon of shopping and wine tasting, or to enjoy the beauty of Summerland's beach side Lookout Park. You will love Summerland's abundance-with-a-small-town-pace and the close proximately to the riches of Santa Barbara and beyond....moreless

attention to detail, laundry on site ,convenient for parking. Big fluffy cozy bed . The sitting area in the garden besides the lovely roses, and vegetable garden had a trail of little hanging vases bordering the footpath with fresh roses. the owner had a lovely basket filled with a bountiful collection of fresh local fruits and vegetables upon my arrival. the bathroom, kitchen bedroom living room all had fresh flowers and specimen orchid plants ,and last the view of the ocean from the deck /icing on the cake this little town of summerland is great because it is located between sb proper and the growing hub Carpinteria . The town has a collection of the best antiques, great littlle cafes and more .... I be back soon

Owner response: Thank you Sandra, for the lovely review. I am so pleased you were comfortable and happy. I know you are a businesswoman and accustomed to proving your customers with beauty and quality and service, among other things. So it really means a lot to me to return the service. Thank you for noticing and for the time it took you to send a review. I look forward to having you as our guest again next time. Most sincerely, Beth & family.
The pictures on the website do not do this cottage justice. The house is tastefully decorated and furnished to bring out its character, of which it has lots. The view of the ocean and Channel Islands from the terrace is spectacular. We had a wonderful week in Summerland. It is convenient for Santa Barbara, Ventura and the wine area. Beth, the owner couldn't have been more helpful and kind, leaving fruit and flowers for our arrival and being attentive to our needs during our stay. We would not hesitate to recommend Seaglass Cove to anyone looking for a charming place to stay. Thank you Beth.

Great ocean view
Great ocean view
I was referred to stay at the Seaglass Cove by a friend. Needing a vacation I quickly booked a week stay. I found myself enjoying the cottage very much. The ocean view and breeze was beautiful! I found my self feeling very relaxed during my stay. Beth was very nice and quick to respond to any questions or needs that I had. I found the cottage to be very cozy and adored the unique pieces and decorative touches that it provided. I rated it as good, because I am in my seventies and found it difficult at times to walk up the slope and steps. Having said that I enjoyed my stay so much that I am coordinating with my family to book another summer vacation there.

Owner response: Thank you Lois. I am so happy you were happy. I can't change that Seaglass Cove is situated on a hillside, and I realize some people may have issue with the slope (when walking down to the town) and/or the few steps from the parking area to the door. Thank you for addressing that detail for those that maybe would need to know that and forget to inquire. I am thrilled to hear you are planning to be back and with family. Perhaps I can assist you further next time, with mapping out the flattest three block walk to town. Some routes are easy and some are not! Thank you for taking the time to send a review. Most sincerely, Beth & family.
Great retreat and Great Value for the area!
Great retreat and Great Value for the area!
I am a frequent vrbo user and visit the Santa Barbara/Montecito area a couple of times a year so I have rented various properties from vrbo and stayed at several hotels/resorts in the area. Beth was very pleasant and easy to work with and responded quickly to any/all inquiries. I initially inquired about the top level cottage and it was already rented so I chose this one as it was available for my requested dates. There are three rentals (like a tri-plex on different levels) and they are all unique and cozy. This unit is priced very reasonably and therefore I was able to overlook a few things that did not meet my expectations. The kitchen is small but adequate and I had no issues with the antique stove that a previous guest complained about - it was charming and worked well for me. The fridge is a dorm size without an icemaker or ice trays and I found myself picking up bags of ice each day, but the light noise it makes sounds a bit like a perculator in the background and was not bothersome to me at all. The VIEW IS AWESOME and probably the best of all the units and the patio perfect for gazing out at the sea and enjoying coffee in the morning or wine in the evening. I loved awaking in the morning and opening the french doors to let the breeze come in. I felt very safe in the neighborhood and walked into the little town of Summerland for coffee nearly each day. My issue was with the shower as the house is a bit quirky being over 100 years old (which also makes it comfy and cozy) and the bathroom is very small with nowhere to put anything except inside the medicine cabinet. The shower head was limited in range - Beth did stop by and show me how to change the direction however it never worked well for me. I would recommend a new shower head that can be hand held as well. Also the queen bed was creaky and soft and not good for my bad back and I spent a couple nights on the sofa. The linens and pillows were wonderful though and it was nice to have a w/d on property to wash towels and the like if needed. I would stay here again as the value is remarkable for the location, but will probably try one of the other units. Just a couple minor upgrades would have me giving it 5 stars. Thank you for sharing your wonderful property with me Beth!

Love this place!
Love this place!
What a lovely rental! Comfortably furnished with decorator touches that make it special. Loved the kitchen with the antique (but very usable stove). Had everything that we needed for our 10 day stay. Enjoyed morning coffee on the deck, with great views of the ocean nearly every morning. Beth was a wonderful hostess and provided us with great tips on things to do and places to eat in the area. We'll definitely be back again!

Owner response: Thank you for your lovely review Casandra. It was such a pleasure to have you and your husband. Thank you for taking the time to share your enjoyment of Seaglass Cove. It really means a lot to me. Most gratefully, Beth Goodman and family.
Even though loaded with "charm," way too many little decorative items created clutter and did not disguise the fact that some things just did not work: hot and cold faucets in the shower were not safe; limited kitchen equipment (no cereal spoons, overly rustic pottery coffee cups, etc.); very small refrigerator made so much noise we had to sleep with the bedroom door closed, to name a few. The small deck had a view over the highway and the railroad tracks (typical of area) to the ocean. A short drive to Dog Beach, which was beautiful for birding and walking. Easy driving access to Montecito, Santa Barbara and the area vineyards. Do not miss The Sacred Space in Summerland. Other: I did not check off 55+ recommendation below because Queen four poster bed would be difficult to get into and out of if you were short and old.

Owner response: Dear Guests~ I am genuinely sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at Seaglass Cove. It is my goal that I make my guests happy in every way that I can. The fact that you were not satisfied weighs heavy on me. I am truly sorry. I will look into the things that you mentioned and see if there is anything I can do to improve the property. That said, I want to add that this is a quirky old house. It is the price that it is because it is not perfect. For all the things that it is and is not, I think it is an incredible value. It is hard to find a basic hotel room in the Santa Barbara area for that price, never mind one w/a lovely kitchen, living room, and expansive views. I have done my best to provide fine linens, handmade elements, local artists' works and other quality touches, like fresh organic fruit and flowers. Most of the appliances are brand new (last November) including the toaster, microwave, coffee maker, and frig, (among other new elements like the tv.) The old stove is from the 50's. I have it calibrated and serviced whenever necessary and there is even a signed copy of the book, "Old Stoves are Hot" by the Old Stove Guru who services it. I had no idea that you would not love the handmade, artisan coffee cups. Nor was I aware of your need for a different size spoon. The frig is small because the space for it is small. But if it is making more noise than I have noticed, I will look into replacing it. I know you were not interested in reading the reviews, though I did encourage you as I encourage all of my guests, in the process of booking, to look at the reviews on both this listing and the sister listing, Seaglass Lookout (393364) because of the information they provide, both positive and negative. I do ask every guest, to please call me if there is anything I can do while they are here, to let me know if there is anything they need. I can not make it better in the present moment, if I am not asked. Truly, dear guests, I would have loved for you to have a perfect stay. Again, I will look into these matters you have presented. It is my goal to continue to improve the experience for everyone. I wish you both all the best.

Outstanding experience was ours at Seaglass Cove April 1 - April 7 ~ 2013
My sister Merry and I had a dream like 12 day getaway from the Seattle area to sunny California. Our last week was spent perfectly situated at Seaglass Cove in Summerland, just 6 miles south of Santa Barbara. We were greeted the evening of our arrival by Beth and her son, who both hugged us and then took us on, what turned out to be an enchanting tour. The main living and dining room areas were candle lit, the french doors were open allowing fresh ocean breezes to enter and fresh flowers adorned every room. A large wire decorative basket held an enormous collection of oranges and bananas for our stay. And finally our tour ended with hugs from Beth and her son. My sister and I were in AWE and still are. Absolutely nothing compares and I would not stay any other place than Beth Goodman's property in Summerland. From the cottage we could easily walk to the main street in Summerland offering many shops and eateries. The beach is also within walking distance. My sister and I found our mornings to be quite long, as our sense of contentment to simply soak up the ocean view while sipping coffee, eating sliced oranges and toast was tranquil and just what one needed to begin what would often turn out to be a busy afternoon and evening. It feels to me that I'm sharing a "Best Kept Secret", with you all today. Happy and safe travels, one and all.

What an absolutely wonderful time my husband and I had at Seaglass Cove. This was my second visit to Summerland; the first being in June 2012 with my daughter and we had stayed at Seaglass Lookout which was absolutely perfect! My husband, being a first-timer to Summerland and California, could not have said more good things about the "Cove". It was very comfortable, the scenery from the balcony was perfect to view the beautiful sunsets, and the accommodations couldn't have been more perfect. It was nice to be able to enjoy the mornings by having our coffee and breakfast at the "Cove" without having to rush to get out the door for our first cup of the day. Beth is such a wonderful hostess and she is sure that everything is to your liking and/or expectations! Beth always has the best fresh fruit and flowers upon your arrival which makes a guest feel very welcome. Cannot wait to go back to Summerland and enjoy everything that the area has to offer. A big "Thank you" to Beth for such a great place to stay. You made us feel very welcome. Thanks again.

We pass through this area once a year and are always looking for a special place to stay. And we found it with Seaglass Cove! Everything was just perfect for my husband and me. It was tastefully decorated, clean, and well-maintained. The kitchen is well equipped and the refitted Tappan gas range was so fun to cook on. Fresh fruit and flowers welcomed us. We felt so pampered. The location is great for walking to the beach, to the town for lunch and shopping. We basked in the January sun on the private deck and often just relaxed there. The view of the ocean is spectacular! We enjoyed the owner and felt that she was easy to work with when making the arrangements. Seaglass Cove had recently been remodeled and so the pictures accurately show this charming rental. We hope to return again next year, but we are thinking that we will have to make reservations early as I am sure that many people will realize that this is a very special place. Thanks for sharing your cottage with us.

About the owner: My name is Beth Goodman and Santa Barbara is my beloved home town. My family is deeply connected to this beautiful community. A small business owner nearly all of my life, my focus has always been on design and real estate. A former floral designer and flower shop owner, I love decorating, especially with flowers and still create the occasional wedding and special event. Real Estate is also in my blood. I am a licensed Realtor in California and Arizona. I feel passionately about homes - primary residences and vacation homes alike, and finding the right one for each of my clients brings me great pleasure. Helping my clients find a home, or creating a space that makes my guests feel at home (including getting out of the way to let my guests privately enjoy) is what I love to do. I love creating and transforming spaces to welcome, nurture and inspire my guests. From the furnishings to the gardens, to providing healthy bowls of organic fruit that welcome each guest - I love being a vacation rental owner, it seems a perfect marriage of my passions. I also love getting to be a resource for visitors who are coming to see this beautiful community. Santa Barbara and the surrounding area has so much to offer. I love connecting people with that which will truly resonate with them. This is such a truly special place, I look forward to sharing it with you.
Why the Owner Chose Summerland:
Summerland is a town situated on rolling hillsides that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Everything is oriented toward the sea. This property, among a hillside of other beauties, is so breathtaking. Believed to be built in 1880, when we bought it late in the summer of 2011, it needed some love and attention..and we have been hard at work ever since! In the gardens, terraced flowerbeds and succulents, rock walls and a gorgeous view lawn, as well as an organic vegetable garden highlight the landscape. A glorious Phoenix Canarianthus palm creates a dramatic focal point, (that is - if you are not simply staring straight out to sea.) Inside, Seaglass Cove is a unique, charming and private piece of this long-standing triplex. The cozy, enveloping nature of this unit wraps you in comfort and ambiance. Each of the three units on this property boasts truly special qualities and views. While not any one occupant is truly alone on the property, each unit experiences a uniqueness and a privacy that makes for a beautifully, individual lifestyle. So the land itself is lovely and the charm of the old house combined with it's location on the planet (here on the coast near Santa Barbara) make Seaglass Cove (and it's sister property Seaglass Lookout) a very special place indeed.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Seaglass Cove is walking distance to the sweet, unspoiled gem-of-a-town, known as Summerland, CA. The views are spectacular, especially true at sunrise and sunset when oranges, pinks and reds highlight the Channel Islands on the horizon and the waters of the Pacific sparkle like diamonds over deep shades of blue. It's the best of California and specifically Santa Barbara, and at a price that is truly a bargain.
