Great Duck Island is a remote, 260-acre, wilderness island ten miles offshore and due south of Acadia National Park. The island is a blend of pointed fir forests, seaside meadows, wildflower and moss gardens, surrounded by popplstone beaches, granite cliffs, and hedges of wild roses. It is the nesting habitat for a large number of birds, including bald eagles, eider ducks, petrels, and seagulls. Our house is the only home on this pristine island.
Our two-story, Victorian, Gothic-style cottage, perched on the northeast point of the island, has 270-degree, sweeping, panoramic views of open ocean to the south and to the east, neighboring islands to the west, and to the north there are spectacular views of the only mountains on the Atlantic coast of North America, the mountains of Acadia. The house is so close to the ocean that you can see waves crashing and watch the sunrise, sunset, and moonrise over the water while lying in bed.
This island is a perfect place for couples or families seeking solitude and an experience of nature. Naturalists, hikers, meditators, writers, photographers, painters, and those wanting to live deliberately without the distractions of modern life will love this place.
This two-story house has 1450 square feet of undivided interior space, steep roofs, eight gables, and two small second-story decks. It is completely furnished. On the first floor there is a living area with a piano, a large Jotul wood stove with a view of the fire, a dining alcove which opens to a north facing mountain-view deck, and a double-size bed alcove surrounded by seven windows. The second floor has a living/dining area with a double-size bed futon couch, woodstove, French doors to the east sunrise-watching deck, and the master bed alcove with cathedral ceiling, Gothic-arched window, and queen-size bed. The second floor also has a well-equipped and supplied kitchen area with propane refrigerator and stove and French doors to the west sunset-viewing deck. There is a bathroom with a sink, tub, hand-pumped shower, and composting toilet.
Because of our remote location there is no running water in the house. Spring water for drinking and cooking needs to be bought and carried on. For washing, we provide water carried on by our caretaker onto the island in six-gallon containers.
Outside, there is a comfortable hammock for resting and breathing in the magical view, as well as a variety of outdoor furniture. Tucked into the spruce, there is a deluxe outhouse with glass door with a wonderful view of the ocean and mountains. In a beautiful meadow behind the house there is a wooden outdoor shower with solar-heated water.
We have a computer-friendly generator for lights in the evening and miscellaneous electrical needs.
Boat transportation to the island is arranged with the Mount Desert Water Taxi. Ask to make a short side trip to see the colony of Harbor and Great Gray seals on Little Duck Island on the trip out.
