Vacation at a Ghost Town in Dutch Flat Vacation Rentals
Dutch Flat is actually designated as a "semi-ghost" town; and in 2009, it boasted 333 residents. However, what the town lacks in population, it makes up for in charm. Among some of the great features is the Golden Drift Museum while quaint historic buildings adorn the town. Parades are held on holidays like the 4th of July, and there's the Dutch Flat Cemetery you can visit. (What would vacationing in a ghost town be without a good cemetery?)
There is Lots to Do Near Dutch Flats
Even a ghost town has entertainment. Dutch Flat is located near mountain recreation areas, just a short distance from snow and water skiing, fishing, biking, kayaking, gold panning and hiking the mountain trails. For these events, a Gold Country High Sierra cabin would be ideal.
Dutch Flat has a Colorful History
In the 19th century, Dutch Flat was referred to as "the Athens of the Foothills." It had a thriving arts community; Mark Twain even lectured at its Opera House. Although miners originally settled Dutch Flat, it first gained prominence as an important stagecoach stop, making it one of the most important towns in Placer County. Lumber was a prominent industry, employing around 200 men, including 50 Chinese workers. By the late 1860s, with the transcontinental railroad underway, it was one of the largest Chinese settlements outside of San Francisco. German brothers, Joseph and Charles Dornbach, founded Dutch Flat. Muleskinners referred to the Dornbach's camp as "Dutch Charlie's Flat"- thus the town's name.
