  • Greeted by disaster

"After traveling 6 hours, we arrived at the house at 9pm. The driveway was covered in garbage from previous guests, which should have been our first sign. Upon opening the front door, we were greeted by piles of soiled linens and towels. The floors were dirty, bathrooms had not been cleaned, beds had not been made...the house was literally how the previous guest had left it. After 30 minutes of frantically calling the numbers listed, we finally reached Paula. She was very helpful and reached the property managers to come clean. They made us feel like an inconvenience because they had to "leave their 4 children at home while they came to clean". They came and cleaned the bathrooms and washed linens for the beds (didnt clean the floors)...that's it. My feet were black on the bottom from walking around barefoot on the indoor tile. We were told that they could not place us anywhere else and it was just a "misunderstanding" between the owners and managers. Thankfully we arrived at 9 and not midnight when nothing could have been done and we would have been stuck with dirty linens and no laundry soap. The property managers pretty much had a "oh well, it is what it is" type of attitude about the situation. We were never offered a discount, cleaning fee refund, or any other compensation for the mishap. I emailed the owner on Friday 2/20/15 and as of 2/22/15 I have not received a response in regards to the situation. We have used VRBO for many years, and have never had an incident quite like this."

  • Golden Girls Getaway

"We chose this location for its outstanding value, its proximity to WDW, and the 5 bathrooms for the five of us. It was perfect! A little glitch with the Internet was promptly resolved by the property manager. Minor suggestions for improvements would include dishwashing liquid, small packs of laundry soap, etc. the house was clean, the neighbors were nice, and the pool was great! I'd wholeheartedly recommend this property to family and friends."

  • Home away from home

"I stayed at this property for 10 nights from March 25 to April 4. During the booking process the owner was extremely prompt with responding to emails and addressing any questions I had. Dealing with the management company to comfirm my booking was efficient as well with payments taken and information delivered when promised. My only recommendation for the management company would be to update their information book in the condo to reflect the Oakwater resort in which we were staying (mostly in reference to garbage collection schedules). It took us a few days to find the note by the garage about the collection process for that property as it wasn't mentioned in the book. The condo was exactly as promised and photos indicate. We had everything we needed and target and publix are a 5 minute drive away for groceries or supplies. The location is ideal for anyone going to Disney and any restaurant (including some that are open 24 hours) you could want is on the main drag (The 192) a block away. We were extremely pleased with the pool area. It never seemed to be overly crowded and no issues getting a chair if you went mid day. I LOVED that the pool area was non smoking so you didn't have someone smoking beside you as I have experienced in other resorts. Conveinient washroom facilities and ease of entrance stairs to both pool and hot tub for those traveling with seniors or anyone with mobility challenges. Thank you for a wonderful vacation! We will be back!"

The Villages Travel Tips

The retirement community of The Villages is located in sunny, central Florida. It is 20 miles south of Ocala and 57 miles northwest of Orlando in Lake, Sumter and Marion counties. This development is home to more than 51,000 people and the fastest-growing micropolitan area in the U.S. as well as the fastest-growing small town.

The Villages' history dates back to the 1960s when Harold Schwartz, a Michigan businessman, sold land to retirees looking to escape to a warmer climate. Today, the descendants of Harold Schwartz and his son H. Gary Morse still control The Villages.

The Villages Attractions

The master-planned retirement community offers several forms of recreational activity. The Villages has numerous golf courses and offers "Free Golf for Life." Thirty-two of the courses are 9-hole layouts while the remaining 10 are country club championship courses. Two additional courses will be 27-hole layouts with a total of 621 holes of golf by the end of a final course build?-out.

Visit the Florida Carriage Museum and Resort and take a step back in time. This museum is home to the largest collection of antique horse-drawn carriages in the U.S. and is one of the largest in the world. There are more than 160 carriages from Europe and America, including the 1850 Ambruster Dress Chariot that once carried Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth.

You can do plenty of shopping without leaving The Villages. There are boutiques scattered throughout the town squares, including many of the country's most popular brands. There are also grocery stores, pharmacies and superstores that will help you find everything you need. You can even venture throughout The Villages on your golf cart, the most fun way to travel through a small town.
