My wife and I built our dream house on the North Shore of Oahu because its location offered the perfect balance between beach, people, and things to do. Within steps from the house in one direction you can be diving in a marine sanctuary; in the other direction is the nearly always deserted Keiki Beach. The historic town of Haleiwa, ten minutes down the road, has great restaurants and many cute shops to explore. If golf is your bag, the world famous Turtle Bay Resort is also a very short drive.
Michael purchased this house in 2006
With just over an acre of land I was able to build a 4800 square foot house and still have plenty of garden for fruit trees and a expansive lawn.
The house is so phenomenal. It is even prettier in person. It is roomy and cozy all at the same time. The layout is perfect. 4800 SF of lusciousness! I love that each bedroom has it's own bathroom and lanai. It was more than enough room for all 8 of us whether we wanted to hang out together or have some quiet time. We had breakfast and dinner together most every day. We loved having breakfast out on the wrap around porch.
The property itself is so amazing because it has coconuts, limes, avocados, bananas, and papayas. Plus the landscaping is so well taken care of that we enjoyed just hanging out in the yard. There were beautiful birds, funny chickens, and happy roosters. The pool is wonderful and refreshing. It is the perfect setting because it is close to everything but set back enough to enjoy nature.
The ocean is right across the street. You can walk to the beaches. If you go out from the house to the right.....you can stroll along the beautiful beaches and enjoy the scenery. Just keep your eyes on the ocean. The water can come in quick. For swimming, you can also go to the beaches to the left. You can walk or drive to Shark's Cove. It's right across from the food trucks next to FoodLand. The water felt wonderful, the views are magnificent, and the sun felt so warm. We got to see some amazing surfing. So cool!
We went Whale Watching, Hang gliding (Mr. Bill's), watched the perfect sunset at Turtle Bay Resort Club, and had an unforgettable experience at the Polynesian Cultural Center. There are so many great places to eat but most days we cooked in the ginormous gourmet kitchen. We also did a lot of shopping. There are tons of great places to walk through. Many unique items in Waliema and a lot of little shops near the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Michael is the perfect host. He made sure that we got into the house and gave us great tips on where to eat. We had a question about the wi-fi and he answered us immediately. The property was so relaxing that we felt like we were home. We will never ever forget our vacation there and we plan to come back in another year. If we could rate it higher than 5 stars we would.
My family of 4 adults and 2 kids spent eight days here and thoroughly enjoyed everything about the place. Mike is a great host and very knowledgeable about the area. The house and property are spacious with lots of privacy and well maintained. If you are looking to get away from the city and spend some time in an open, tropical home away from home this is the place. Just a couple minutes walk to the store or the beach. We would happily stay here again.
We loved staying at Michael and Sarah's castle so much for the month of July, 2014, that we decided to revisit with some friends and relatives for the month of March, 2015. Well, I am happy to report that nothing about the comforts and hospitality have changed. What has changed is that Michael and Sarah continue to work daily from sun-up to sun-down, and sometimes into the night, grooming their piece of Shangri-La. The landscaping just blossoms with beautiful tropical vegetation and fruit bearing trees. I won't go into much of what we did because I believe I said it all in my July write-up. Incidentally, our son, daughter-in-law and five grandchildren continue to rave about their month-stay in paradise in July, 2014. We did however, discover a few more places and eateries this time in and around Pupukea, such as the Red Truck for French Toast, the Impossible Pizza for a pizza that overflows the large box, and the other food trucks that flourish on the North Shore. We spent more time coming the beaches for pieces of sea glass that washed in and spoke with a couple of surf fisherman for some interesting discussions. Visits to the beach near Haleiwa where several turtles reside and are protected, was a treat for those who visited. This trip we also took the time to visit Pu'u Mahuka Heiau "Hill of Escape" State Monument off Pupukea Homestead Road and the Kukaniloko Royal Birthing Stones, a sacred site located in the middle of a sugar cane field near Wahiawa. We also found Leonard's Bakery (home of Malasadas) on Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu, for the best Portuguese Malasadas you'll ever eat. Just being able to relax in a beautiful home located in a near-perfect tropical setting with the perfect hosts is all you need to know about this property to want to return again and again and again. Mahalo nui loa Michael and Sarah for sharing your beautiful piece of paradise with us and for being the perfect hosts and landlords. We will be back. David, Ceil, Jean, Shirley, Robert & Becky and all our visitors.
My wife and I discovered this little piece of paradise in Pupukea via VRBO while we were in the Islands in October 2013. One look at the property and we were sold. We signed the rental agreement for the month of July 2014 and are so pleased that we did. Met Michael, owner, at our place in San Diego a few months later and shared a beer and, I consider, a new friendship. We spent the month of July 2014 at Michael & Sarah's place with our two sons, Matt and Josh, and Matt's wife and five children ranging in age from 8 months to 12 years. It was the first time in the Islands fro Matt and his family. What a terrific month. My wife and I have been coming back to the Islands (generally Oahu) since 1996....usually once, and sometimes twice, a year. In the past we, with the exception of one year, always stayed at Hale Koa Military Resort in Waikiki. Well, we now have a new "home" and it's in Pupukea. We are scheduled to return for the month of March 2015 with four of our closest friends. Cannot wait. Michael and Sarah came from the Mainland about five days before we left and I now have a stake in the property by weeding. The night before we left we spent a couple of hours with Michael and Sarah just shooting the breeze. So nice to meet a couple of genuine people hat are so grounded. No Michael, have not yet started swimming laps, but am thinking about it. I know you want to put me through the paces. Thank you both for everything and for making your "home" available for others to share and all their "home" if only briefly.
My wife and I brought 3 of 4 kids and there significant others to the North Shore for a short vacation and this house was perfect. The only complaint was the last ones arriving were not able to select a bedroom suite first. Each bedroom is en suite with a walk in closet. We loved the lizards and the landscaping. Bananas were not quite ripe but the papaya was great. We used the grill and it is a good one. Mike the owner was there and we had many a discussion. Mike I quit smoking the stinky old cigars by the way. Close to everything and isolated enough from everything. The Pizza truck at the end of the road (Thur - Sat?) is a real deal. Loved the place.
This home on the North Shore is absolutely stunning. Well furnished and an excellent layout for families (two families fit well). The location is ideal - close to the beach, yet secluded on a well-landscaped property with lots of fruit trees The property sounds like an aviary in the mornings. Walking distance to Ke Iki beach (calm, wide beach, great for kids and swimming) and Shark's cove (excellent snorkel spot). Two minute drive to the grocery and within a five minute drive of the famous North Shore beaches (Waimea, Sunset, etc.). Great kitchen and beautiful living room with two walls of glass doors that retract to fully expose the room to a wrap-around deck - when the doors are open, the living space feels fully integrated with the outdoors.
If the owners happen to be visiting, they are very friendly and hospitable. We plan to rent here again.
