($1,100-$2000.00 per night) This unique property is situated above beautiful Wailea Bay on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, one of the few white sand beaches on the island of Hawaii. Beautiful tropical landscaping abounds with privacy and romance. Custom designed home is perfect for family and friends. It features hand painted and hand designed tiles that bring the tropics of the outdoors to the inside. The ocean view kitchen boasts hand-painted tiles of underwater sea life. For your dining pleasure there is an outdoor patio/lanai with an outdoor dining table under the trees just off the kitchen. The kitchen has large pocket windows that open up as a pass through to the outdoor dining area. There is no indoor dining table just the lovely outdoor area. This is a 4 bedroom home with 4 garden showers. One of the bedrooms is located in a private, upstairs, screened gazebo that looks over the gardens and gorgeous Wailea Bay! Bask in the sun at the beach or lay in the hammocks and gaze at dolphins, whales, turtles and all the tropical birds that live in the area.

Designed for outdoor living and relaxation. Each bedroom has it`s own sense of privacy and separate bath with private outdoor garden shower. Two hammocks swing between the palm trees to enjoy the views of the bay and water activities from complete serene privacy. The home itself is a piece of art work. Custom designed hand painted tiles create Hawaiian scenes from sandy beaches to tropical flowers. The tropical gardens offer beautiful settings for reading, relaxing and sun bathing. Fairly easy access into sandy bottom ocean for swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, surfing and other ocean activities. The Bay is peaceful and is a great place to swim, snorkel and paddle board. We can offer you contacts of local vendors to rent equipment + ocean toys and have it delivered to your home.

"Thanks so much, Pattie. We had the best time ever!! I definitely hope to come back again soon. Thank you so much for accommodating us on such short notice, too. It was a great house, and I cannot tell you how easy it was to find everything with the labeled drawers. We had one of the light bulbs burn out on the lanai, and I looked in the kitchen, found the drawer marked “light bulbs” and we were back in business. That was awesome!

I will definitely be in touch"

About Hawaii Vacation Rentals Pattie Freeman

Pattie Freeman, Real Estate Broker has been managing and renting this home since the Owner's purchased it. We have all since become close friends and enjoy the home when the family is at this villa. The families children have been coming there on a regular basis since they were 3 and 5 years old. They have a family tradition of spending days in the bay swimming and playing in the sand on the beautiful beach. Their family time is spent relaxing and at the home and cooking their own meals with the open air kitchen facing the bay. They find it a time to reconnect and get back to nature!

Hawaii Vacation Rentals Pattie Freeman purchased this villa in 1995

Why Hawaii Vacation Rentals Pattie Freeman chose Puako

The owner of this home chose it because of the superb location on Wailea Bay also known as Beach 69 in the small community of Puako between the Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea Resorts. The location is extremely private and has the feeling of remoteness with resorts near by. It is easy to get in to swim in this beautiful protected bay.

What makes this villa unique

This home was designed for outdoor living with two outdoor dining patios facing the bay. Private garden showers add to the tropical experience of this home under the multitude of coconut palm trees and stars at night. Enjoy the glow of the moon and stars on the bay from your private setting and during the day watch snorkelers go by or join them to see the abundant sea life including Hawaiian Sea Turtles. The original tiled art work throughout the home is 3 dimensional and each bathroom and kitchen has it's own tropical theme. Very nice linens and good quality beds make for great sleep with the sound of the palm trees and lapping of the waves against the sandy beach! Two oceanside hammocks are part of the relaxing experience.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The location of this property is amazing and despite the extremely high winds while we were there, we enjoyed swimming from the house in the early morning while the 69's was empty. Homes so close to the water can sometimes have a musty feeling, but this home felt fresh and very well maintained. The beds were very comfortable and quality of bedding nice. The home was well appointed and clean. The outdoor showers were a highlight as they are private and lovely. It really is an amazing spot. I often looked at the house from the beach wondering what it was like. It did not disappoint, what a wonderful home. Thank you.

Notes:
Puako Beach Drive has no thorough thru access which keeps it virtually still undiscovered by many. Hawaii Vacation Rentals, Inc. had their office next to the Puako General Store for almost 20 years and we often noticed people driving down the road and turning around before ever seeing the charming neighborhood which is still prevalent with original beach shacks next to stately homes as well as charming beach cottages that some owners have preserved. There are homes along the ocean side as well as across the street from the ocean. There are six separate "beach" accesses along this stretch of beach. Although there is not a tremendous amount of sand, there are tide pools and the extensive protected reef is remarkable. During low tide, small pools dot the entire coastline and these pools are filled with small sea life that make excellent areas to explore for all ages. If you enjoy shore diving, kayaking and snorkeling you can find a spot along this stretch of shoreline to enter the water.

Clean & private

  • 2 of 5

Clean & private. Location is good. Desperately needs to be upgraded and modernized. Get the outside tree & lights working, door locks replaced & oiled, knobs on the cupboards are mostly broken, gate lock repaired, etc.

Lacks an inside eating place in cold, wind or rain.

Owner's Response: Aloha Paul, Thank you for your feedback Paul. Yes, this home is unique in many ways. We are in the process of adding more language to our description about no indoor dining. We are continually working on making our homes more and more inviting when guests share a disappointment. Because of your comments, we will be adding key pads to all of the doors in order to update the locks. The home is very artful and the shell knobs that are made with real shells can be a bit of a challenge, but most folks love the art that is such a part of this home. I believe there were two knobs that had come off. The ocean air is quite hard on outdoor lighting and that is being worked on as well. We are so sorry Aina Malia did not meet your expectations. We invite all of our guests to discuss this home prior to reserving it as many of the features are not for everyone and truly is an indoor/outdoor living home with a location that is incomparable. Unfortunately you were here when we happened to have a winter storm with cool weather and extreme winds. We welcome you back when the weather is not so severe and you can enjoy every meal right by the ocean. Mahalo, Pattie

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Aina Malia was an amazing experience, you live by the ocean and we managed to see from the house whales, turtles and manta rays. It's the perfect house to spend time with family during the holidays.

Thank you Pattie for everything

Unique, Private Ocean Front

  • 5 of 5

The location is an ideal balance of allowing easy access to a popular beach while granting exclusive privacy. The bottom of the steps in front are sandy, with an easy wade to the beach. (Or, if you want to keep your feet dry, take the Ala Kahakai trail 100' up the road to the beach.)

To counter a recent negative review: yes, people can climb the rocks in the front of the house - but we saw this only once in our week. Between the kiawe and impassable rocks, it takes a determined and frustrated tourist to explore the south end of the beach. And then there is a fence and more thorns between the rocks and the yard, so that you can feel safe napping in a hammock while being granted a stunning view. Behind the house, the beach access is now closed and the wall and sturdy gate left me comfortable enough to leave kayaks, bikes and gear out overnight.

The house is charming, bordering on peculiar. The kitchen was easy to work in, the house clean, and the surrounding community quiet and fascinating. It greatly exceeded our expectations and I wish we have spent another week. I've rented seven ocean front homes in the the Hawaiian Islands, and for this price, none have come close in quality and location.

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

Hi Pattie,

I just wanted to thank you so much for the best vacation I have ever been on. The place was more than what I had expected. And the ocean was breathtaking. We had plans to hike, explore other beaches and shop a little, we ended up staying and enjoying the place we had and loving every minute. We had one person that was not an ocean. She wanted to go to a hotel pool and hang out. Well she is now an ocean lover. How could you not be? Right!!

We met up with my nephew his wife and three kids who we had never met before. I can’t express how great the trip was. The house gave us the perfect location to just enjoy each other without having the hassle of going anywhere.

The last day we cleaned up. Hopefully you were happy with how we left it. We did find the checkout procedures. We did everything we could to make it easy to clean.

Once we were pretty close to being done my two boys and I took one last swim out to the rocks together. This is a memory I will never forget. This trip brought us all closer together which we all really needed. I can’t thank you enough for working with me on the house and making it possible.

I wish we could have met up with you on this trip. Hopefully we will be able to come back next year and stay longer.

Take Care Mahalo!

Mary

Great Home, Wonderful Location -- Hard to Beat

  • 5 of 5

We rented a home on Puako Beach Drive represented by Hawaiian Vacation Rentals many times over the course of a decade. Over that decade, we were been blessed with grandchildren and outgrew that fabulous home.

This year, we rented Aina Malia for the first time. Upon arrival, my oldest daughter commented that I had outdone myself. With six adults and several children under ten, Aina Malia was the perfect house. The two kitchen refrigerators were perfect for our large group and the associated Costco groceries. Imagine our delight when we found the third outdoor bar fridge.

Beyond the dual refrigerators, the other kitchen appliances were top of the line. The kitchen pantry had every necessity (and more) and the kitchen accoutrements left nothing to be desired. The new cookware and its associated care instructions made it possible for me to bake a meatloaf with some of that Costco ground beef without worrying that I would harm the handles of the cookware.

Beds and linens were quite comfortable. Towels, including beach towels, were enough for the group. The washer and dryer were the nicest ones I have seen in a second home.

Access to the ocean -- A+.

Finally, I highly recommend splurging on the air conditioning. We were on island in mid-July, and it was great to have a cool place to retreat to during the heat of the day. Thought the gazebo room has neither its own bath or air conditioning, we did not find that to be a problem.

We plan to return next year.

Cute Property But Too Many Problems

  • 2 of 5

This is a very cute 4 bdrm house of approx 2,000 sf. The water views are somewhat sporadic since the house is set back from the cliff with the view obscured by a lot of trees & a high thorny bush with branches that were 5-6 ft high. The master has no view at all. Also important to know that the gazebo has no bathroom. There is a public path that runs along the cliff edge within a few feet of the dining area, which was quite busy when we were there and which was somewhat intrusive. Access to the ocean can be treacherous except on the calmest of days because it is a very large bay with lots of waves most of the time.

Unfortunately, the property wasn't in very good condition when we rented it. The housecleaning was spotty, which should have been immaculate considering the cleaning charge for such a small house. There was also a lot of deferred maintenance - lights not working indoors & out, loose sink faucets & toilet sets, broken blinds, broken dishwasher door that injured our foot, loose knobs, greasy appliances, entertainment center problems with image & sound. We also had mice scurrying around the master bedroom late at night, which one of us stepped on, and another that got into the food pantry, eating through a bag of chips - which was a first for us in decades of Hawaii rentals. We think most people would agree that renters shouldn't have to deal with problems like this for a property with such a highly nightly rate.

However, we were willing to move past it all after the owner's friend showed up next to our last day there, assuring us that the owner Dale would contact us and provide compensation for the problems. But we never heard from Dale at all nor received any compensation. Only because we contacted the friend about a month or so later to find out what had happened did we receive a vague reference to an unspecified discount on a future rental with a retraction of all previous representations. It was clear to us that Dale didn't share his friend's good intentions, which is the reason we can't recommend this rental. You can't always prevent things from going wrong but you can always make things right - if you care enough about the experiences of your customers and want them to return.

Owner's Response: From time to time we receive comments from guests whose motivation seems more to punish us than enlighten other possible renters about one of our vacation homes. In this case, we are disappointed that this guest was not happy with his stay, but he is very much the exception that proves the rule: Aina Malia is one of our most beautiful homes on the most beautiful bay on the Big Island. Anyone who knows Wailea Bay knows that it is one of the most serene bays on the Big Island with easy swimming and excellent snorkeling among its best features. The comment "There is a public path that runs along the cliff edge within a few feet of the dining area... was quite busy when we were there…" is pure fiction because there is no such path and anyone who has ever stayed at Aina Malia will tell you that it is is one of the most private homes one could stay at with virtually no outsiders ever seeing into the yard. Aina Malia is a very popular home and many, if not most, of the bookings are with people who vacation there every year, some for a month at a time. We would be pleased to refer any prospective guests to speak with prior guests who can attest to the beauty of this home and location. The Owner Aloha from the Big Island! I personally had many dealings with this very nice guest prior to arrival and during his visit. This home sits right above the bay, with views across one of the most coveted beaches on Big Island. The view is exactly as shown on the listing photos. There is low landscaping across the front between yard and ocean which is purposely planted to keep privacy. It has never been 5-6 feet tall by the nature of the plant. There are two dining areas outside and one is very close to the ocean, which most folks find quite enjoyable. In the winter season there are random, short periods of time when there could be large waves, preventing guests and beach visitors from entering near the steps to the normally shallow water. This location is quite rare and unique, as it is the only location a person can walk down some cement stairs and stand up on a sandy bottom. We have staff on call that can address issues like entertainment center or sound issues. There is also a guest book in the home with helpful information. This home is designed for indoor/outdoor living so be prepared to have a little more of the island, tropical feel with dust and sea spray which can occur since so close the water. I deeply apologize to this guest. Aloha, Pattie~Hawaii Vacation Rentals
