About the property

Come and enjoy this private tropical retreat. Our home offers 2 bedrooms and 2 baths! The master bedroom is upstairs and offers a comfortable Cal-King bed with nice linen, new pillows, a flat screen TV and DVD player. The second bedroom is downstairs with a view of the pond, a king size bed, it's own bathroom with stack washer and dryer, a TV, and DVD player! From the living room you will enjoy comfortable Teak and rattan furniture with a 65 inch curved screen television, DVD player, CD player and WI-FI. The upstairs also has its own stack washer and dryer for convenience.. Every room has its own ceiling fan as well as the Lanai!

From the living room you have an expansive view of our private pond as well as a koa wood eating bar for having your morning coffee while feeding the fish from above. Our pond is home to native fish and our resident turtles Maui and Moana. We also have a frequent native Hawaiian bird called a Auku'u or (Black crowned Night Heron) named Cray Cray. He just loves to have you fish for him!. Out doors next to the pond you will find a lower covered Lani complete with a patio set, BBQ, and mini fridge for your convenience.

This home sits peacefully in a tropical surrounding just a 2 minute walk from the Famous Waio'pe Tide pools which is home to one of the most diverse populations of fish and coral in all of Hawai. The Tide Pools offer incredible swimming and snorkeling in calm, protected water.! A mile drive down the Red road from our home is a beautiful Public Hot pond, Ahalanui Park, that is very therapeutic to relax in and enjoy the benefits of the mineral water and beautiful scenery. Ahalanui Hot Pond is a natural pool fed by a fresh water spring and the Pacific Ocean. It is warmed by underground volcanic sources and water temperature in the pool can reach to a balmy 90 degrees!

The Big island offers hiking, sight seeing, fishing, snorkeling, zip lining, and of course the "Volcano" which can be seen by night or day on foot or by boat tour. Near by Kalapana offers a resort with therapeutic massages. Pahoa town which is a 15 minute drive has many good places to eat and small shops with a lot of the Aloha spirit the Hawaiians are known for. You will not find a more restful spot. If you love farmers markets you will find a great one in Hilo on Saturdays and a very nice one near Pahoa on Sundays. There is also a local zoo, the Mauna Loa macadamia nut farm, and Akatsuka Orchid Gardens to visit. Too many things to list.

We hope you will decide to visit!

Disclaimer: Be aware that this is a tropical island. This is the rain forest side of the island. You will encounter various bugs and you will have rain. We do our best to insure a bug free environment as much as humanly possible in and around our home. Nothing is poisonous on the island. We are not responsible for acts of God or nature. Clean. Nicely furnished. All the amenities. Beautiful setting. Close enough to services.

  • 5 of 5

For two artists seeking inspiration, this location was perfect for our two-week stay! The house was great and the location is unbeatable. It's off the beaten path but close enough to services and a 5 minute walk to amazing tide pools. The property has a large pond with fish, turtles and a resident Black-Crowned Night Heron. Also saw Cardinal, Yellow-Billed Cardinal, Zebra Dove, Spotted Dove, Saffron Finch an Japanese White-Eye in the yard. Plus lots of Gold Dust Day Geckos. Look them up! So wonderful! If I ever go back to the Big Island, I will book this house!

Great location, but not as comfortable as expected

  • 2 of 5

Overall, the house was in a great location close to everything we needed, but there were a few things about it that made the house not as easy to stay in. We did enjoy feeding the fish (it was very cool) and turtles in the pond as well as making food in the kitchen.

1. There are NO windows in the living room, only screens. It rained every day we were there and the rain came right into the living room and covered the floor, the wood bar and furniture. We moved the furniture before we left every day as we didn't want to see it get wet OR use it when soaked. Even the front door was only wrought iron with a screen.

2. There were bugs everywhere. We know this is island living and it's somewhat expected, but when we're trying to sleep, we didn't expect to get bitten all night long. There were dead and live bugs all over the house, from cockroaches to fire ants (both of us were bitten by fire ants a few times) to gnats and other flying bugs. There was nothing we could do about them.

3. There are GIANT garden spiders all along the path to the house. While they aren't venomous to humans, they were VERY scary and we had to walk very slowly as we didn't want to disturb them.

4. The sheets on the bed upstairs were put on incorrectly and we couldn't figure out what was happening until the 2nd day. They kept riding up because they were on incorrectly. Then, when we put them on the right way, we found they weren't the right size.

5. No a/c. While we knew this before we stayed there, it was SO hot an muggy even at night that we had a very hard time sleeping. You might want to consider a portable a/c like other rental homes have. It will make the experience much better especially at night.

At the top of this page, it asks "Did you enjoy your stay?" I loved it is chosen by default and you cannot change it to Not really. A bit frustrating.

So, we do thank the owners for letting us stay at their house, but we would not stay there again. We can't imagine staying there in the heat of summer with no a/c and even more bugs.

Owner's Response: Im sorry you found the house to be uncomfortable. We have never had this kind of a response. The bedrooms and kitchen have louvered windows that open and close. The living room has only screens, true. I was there in October and it rained very heavy and never, ever, did rain come into our home. The front deck is roofed and the bar area has a very wide 3 foot eve. Maybe it's how the wind blew I don't know but we have never had any one say this. Bugs are a given in the tropics of an island . We have treated for ants 3x and fire ants were only found in one location by the pond. Never in our home!. Never cockroaches.. we do put bait out, hidden, just in case. We are in a private tropical setting with flora and trees. You will see spiders! Non poisonous of course and no way going to jump on you. Our sheets are all King size because every bed is king size with the exception of the full size futon. It's impossible to get full size sheets on a king bed. The sheets are very high quality and new. I can't imagine why they wouldn't fit. We are installing A/C units this spring but be advised one of the most expensive utilities on island is electricity. This will increase our rates. Prices are great for our home and it's setting and amenities as well as location. 125$ a night barely gets you a decent hotel room .. I would like to say I'm sorry but I'm very picky as a consumer and our home is an excellent value and very comfortable . "It is a tropical island". You will see bugs and encounter bugs. It is impossible to remove them. I hope you enjoy your other options on your next trip! Mahalo
